A support theorem for Hilbert schemes of planar curves

Consider a family of integral complex locally planar curves whose relative Hilbert scheme of points is smooth. The decomposition theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein, and Deligne asserts that the pushforward of the constant sheaf on the relative Hilbert scheme splits as a direct sum of shifted semisimple perverse sheaves. We will show that no summand is supported in positive codimension. It follows that the perverse filtration on the cohomology of the compactified Jacobian of an integral plane curve encodes the cohomology of all Hilbert schemes of points on the curve. Globally, it follows that a family of such curves with smooth relative compactified Jacobian ("moduli space of D-branes") in an irreducible curve class on a Calabi-Yau threefold will contribute equally to the BPS invariants in the formulation of Pandharipande and Thomas, and in the formulation of Hosono, Saito, and Takahashi.

Equidistribution on the space of rank two vector bundles over the projective line

Fix a finite field. A hyperelliptic curve determines a measure on the discrete space of rank two bundles on the projective line: the mass of a given vector bundle is the number of line bundles whose pushforward it is. In a sequence of hyperelliptic curves whose genera tend to infinity, these measures tend to the natural measure on the space of rank two bundles. This is a function field analogue of Duke's theorem on the equidistribution of Heegner points, and can be proven similarly: it follows from a manipulation of zeta functions, plus the Riemann Hypothesis for curves. Likewise, a sequence of hyperelliptic curves equipped with line bundles gives rise to a sequence of measures on the space of pairs of rank 2 bundles. We give a conjectural classification of the possible limit measures which arise; this is a function field analogue of the "Mixing Conjecture" of Michel and Venkatesh. As in the number field setting, ergodic theory suffices when the line bundle is sufficiently special. For the remaining bundles, we turn to geometry and count points on intersections of translates of loci of special divisors in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve. To prove equidistribution, we would require two results. The first, we prove: the upper cohomologies of these loci agree with the cohomology of the Jacobian. The second, which we establish in characteristic zero and conjecture in characteristic p, is that the sum of the Betti numbers of these spaces grows at most as the exponential of the genus of the hyperelliptic curve.

Torus knots and the rational DAHA

We conjecturally extract the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of the (m, n) torus knot from the unique finite dimensional simple representation of the rational DAHA of type A, rank n - 1, and central character m/n. The conjectural differentials of Gukov, Dunfield and the third author receive an explicit algebraic expression in this picture, yielding a prescription for the doubly graded Khovanov-Rozansky homologies. We match our conjecture to previous conjectures of the first author relating knot homology to q, t-Catalan numbers, and of the last three authors relating knot homology to Hilbert schemes on singular curves.

The Hilbert scheme of a plane curve singularity and the HOMFLY polynomial of its link

The intersection of a complex plane curve with a small three-sphere surrounding one of its singularities is a non-trivial link. The refined punctual Hilbert schemes of the singularity parameterize subschemes supported at the singular point of fixed length and whose defining ideals have a fixed number of generators. We conjecture that the generating function of Euler characteristics of refined punctual Hilbert schemes is the HOMFLY polynomial of the link. The conjecture is verified for irreducible singularities y^k = x^n, whose links are the k,n torus knots, and for the singularity y^4 = x^7 - x^6 + 4 x^5 y + 2 x^3 y^2, whose link is the 2,13 cable of the trefoil.

The Hilbert scheme of a plane curve singularity and the HOMFLY homology of its link

We conjecture an expression for the dimensions of the Khovanov-Rozansky HOMFLY homology groups of the link of a plane curve singularity in terms of the weight polynomials of Hilbert schemes of points scheme-theoretically supported on the singularity. The conjecture specializes to our previous conjecture relating the HOMFLY polynomial to the Euler numbers of the same spaces upon setting t = -1. By generalizing results of Piontkowski on the structure of compactified Jacobians to the case of Hilbert schemes of points, we give an explicit prediction of the HOMFLY homology of a (k, n) torus knot as a certain sum over diagrams. The Hilbert scheme series corresponding to the summand of the HOMFLY homology with minimal "a" grading can be recovered from the perverse filtration on the cohomology of the compactified Jacobian. In the case of (k,n) torus knots, this space furnishes the unique finite dimensional simple representation of the rational spherical Cherednik algebra with central character k/n. Up to a conjectural identification of the perverse filtration with a previously introduced filtration, the work of Haiman and Gordon and Stafford gives formulas for the Hilbert scheme series when k = mn + 1.

Hilbert schemes of points on a locally planar curve and the Severi strata of its versal deformation

Let C be a locally planar curve. Its versal deformation admits a stratification by the genera of the fibres. The strata are singular; we show that their multiplicities at the central point are determined by the Euler numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points on C. These Euler numbers have made two prior appearances. First, in certain simple cases, they control the contribution of C to the Pandharipande-Thomas curve counting invariants of three-folds. In this context, our result identifies the strata multiplicities as the local contributions to the Gopakumar-Vafa BPS invariants. Second, when C is smooth away from a unique singular point, a special case of a conjecture of Oblomkov and Shende identifies the Euler numbers of the Hilbert schemes with the "U(infinity)" invariant of the link of the singularity. We make contact with combinatorial ideas of Jaeger, and suggest an approach to the conjecture.
