Banach spaces for piecewise cone hyperbolic maps

We consider piecewise cone hyperbolic systems satisfying a bunching condition and we obtain a bound on the essential spectral radius of the associated weighted transfer operators acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces. The bunching condition is always satisfied in dimension two, and our results give a unifying treatment of the work of Demers-Liverani and our previous work. When the complexity is subexponential, our bound implies a spectral gap for the transfer operator corresponding to the physical measures in many cases (for example if $T$ preserves volume, or if the stable dimension is equal to 1 and the unstable dimension is not zero).

A local limit theorem with speed of convergence for Euclidean algorithms and diophantine costs

For large $N$, we consider the ordinary continued fraction of $x=p/q$ with $1\le p\le q\le N$, or, equivalently, Euclid's gcd algorithm for two integers $1\le p\le q\le N$, putting the uniform distribution on the set of $p$ and $q$s. We study the distribution of the total cost of execution of the algorithm for an additive cost function $c$ on the set $\mathbb{Z}_+^*$ of possible digits, asymptotically for $N\to\infty$. If $c$ is nonlattice and satisfies mild growth conditions, the local limit theorem was proved previously by the second named author. Introducing diophantine conditions on the cost, we are able to control the speed of convergence in the local limit theorem. We use previous estimates of the first author and Vallée, and we adapt to our setting bounds of Dolgopyat and Melbourne on transfer operators. Our diophantine condition is generic (with respect to Lebesgue measure). For smooth enough observables (depending on the diophantine condition) we attain the optimal speed.

Smooth deformations of piecewise expanding unimodal maps

In the space of C^k piecewise expanding unimodal maps, k>=1, we characterize the C^1 smooth families of maps where the topological dynamics does not change (the "smooth deformations") as the families tangent to a continuous distribution of codimension-one subspaces (the "horizontal" directions) in that space. Furthermore such codimension-one subspaces are defined as the kernels of an explicit class of linear functionals. As a consequence we show the existence of C^{k-1+Lip} deformations tangent to every given C^k horizontal direction, for k>=2.

Alternative proofs of linear response for piecewise expanding unimodal maps

We give two new proofs that the SRB measure of a C^2 path f_t of unimodal piecewise expanding C^3 maps is differentiable at 0 if f_t is tangent to the topological class of f_0. The arguments are more conceptual than the one in our previous paper, but require proving Holder continuity of the infinitesimal conjugacy (a new result, of independent interest) and using spaces of bounded p-variation. The first new proof gives differentiability of higher order if f_t is smooth enough and stays in the topological class of f_0 and if the observable smooth enough (a new result). In addition, this proof does not require any information on the decomposition of the SRB measure into regular and singular terms, making it potentially amenable to extensions to higher dimensions. The second new proof allows us to recover the linear response formula (i.e., the formula for the derivative at 0) obtained in our previous paper and gives additional information on this formula.

Dynamical determinants and spectrum for hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

For smooth hyperbolic dynamical systems and smooth weights, we relate Ruelle transfer operators with dynamical Fredholm determinants and dynamical zeta functions: First, we establish bounds for the essential spectral radii of the transfer operator on new spaces of anisotropic distributions, improving our previous results. Then we give a new proof of Kitaev's lower bound for the radius of convergence of the dynamical Fredholm determinant. In addition we show that the zeroes of the determinant in the corresponding disc are in bijection with the eigenvalues of the transfer operator on our spaces of anisotropic distributions, closing a question which remained open for a decade.

Good Banach spaces for piecewise hyperbolic maps via interpolation

We introduce a weak transversality condition for piecewise C^{1+α} and piecewise hyperbolic maps which admit a C^{1+α} stable distribution. We show good bounds on the essential spectral radius of the associated transfer operators acting on classical anisotropic Sobolev spaces of Triebel-Lizorkin type. In many cases, we obtain a spectral gap from which we deduce the existence of finitely many physical measures with basin of total measure. The analysis relies on standard techniques (in particular complex interpolation) and applies also to piecewise expanding maps and to Anosov diffeomorphisms, giving a unifying picture of several previous results.

On the susceptibility function of piecewise expanding interval maps

We study the susceptibility function Psi(z) associated to the perturbation f_t=f+tX of a piecewise expanding interval map f. The analysis is based on a spectral description of transfer operators. It gives in particular sufficient conditions which guarantee that Psi(z) is holomorphic in a disc of larger than one. Although Psi(1) is the formal derivative of the SRB measure of f_t with respect to t, we present examples satisfying our conditions so that the SRB measure is not Lipschitz.*We propose a new version of Ruelle's conjectures.* In v2, we corrected a few minor mistakes and added Conjectures A-B and Remark 4.5. In v3, we corrected the perturbation (X(f(x)) instead of X(x)), in particular in the examples from Section 6. As a consequence, Psi(z) has a pole at z=1 for these examples.

Spectra of differentiable hyperbolic maps

This note is about the spectral properties of transfer operators associated to smooth hyperbolic dynamics. In the first two sections (written in 2006), we state our new results relating such spectra with dynamical determinants, first announced at the conference ``Traces in Geometry, Number Theory and Quantum Fields" at the Max Planck Institute, Bonn, October 2005. In the last two sections, we give a reader-friendly presentation of some key ideas in our work in the simplest possible settings, including a new proof of a result of Ruelle on expanding endomorphisms. (These last two sections are a revised version of the lecture notes given during the workshop ``Resonances and Periodic Orbits: Spectrum and Zeta functions in Quantum and Classical Chaos" at Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris, July 2005.) Anisotropic Holder and Sobolev spaces for hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

(Revised version, January 2006. S. Gouezel pointed out that, when 1<r<2, the proof in the previous version was incomplete. In fixing this gap, we simplified the argument in Section 6. In addition, there is a new appendix, with an alternative description of the norms. We also corrected a few minor flaws.) We study spectral properties of transfer operators for diffeomorphisms T on a Riemannian manifold: Suppose that there is an isolated hyperbolic subset for T, with a compact isolating neighborhood V. We first introduce Banach spaces of distributions supported on V, which are anisotropic versions of the usual space of C^p functions C^p(V) and of the generalized Sobolev spaces W^{p,t}(V), respectively. Then we show that the transfer operators associated to T and a smooth weight extend boundedly to these spaces, and we give bounds on the essential spectral radii of such extensions in terms of hyperbolicity exponents. These bounds shed some light on those obtained by Kitaev for the radius of convergence of dynamical determinants.

Anisotropic Sobolev spaces and dynamical transfer operators: C^infty foliations

We consider a smooth Anosov diffeomorphism with a smooth dynamical foliation. We show upper bounds on the essential spectral radius of its transfer operator acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces. (Such bounds are related to the essential decorrelation rate for the SRB measure.) We compare our results to the estimates of Kitaev on the domain of holomorphy of dynamical Fredholm determinants for differentiable dynamics.

Euclidean algorithms are Gaussian

This study provides new results about the probabilistic behaviour of a class of Euclidean algorithms: the asymptotic distribution of a whole class of cost-parameters associated to these algorithms is normal. For the cost corresponding to the number of steps Hensley already has proved a Local Limit Theorem; we give a new proof, and extend his result to other euclidean algorithms and to a large class of digit costs, obtaining a faster, optimal, rate of convergence. The paper is based on the dynamical systems methodology, and the main tool is the transfer operator. In particular, we use recent results of Dolgopyat.

Dynamical zeta functions for analytic surface diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting

We study the Ruelle dynamical determinant of a real analytic diffeomorphism on a compact surface, assuming that the tangent space over the nonwandering set admits a dominated splitting. Combining previous work of Pujals and Sambarino with methods introduced by Rugh, we show that the determinant is either entire or holomorphic in a (possibly multiply) slit plane.
