Non-uniqueness for the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We show that singularities of the three-dimensional cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation developing from smooth initial data can induce non-uniqueness of solutions after the time of blowup. The solutions we study start as backward self-similar solutions, and the source of the non-uniqueness is an unstable eigenvalue of the linearization around the forward self-similar profile generated by the singularity. We establish the existence of this eigenvalue, and hence the non-uniqueness, by a computer-assisted proof for specific values of the parameters in the equation. The work is in part motivated by similarities to conjectured behavior for the Navier-Stokes equation, with which the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation shares several important properties, such as an energy inequality and the scaling symmetry.

Refined asymptotics of the steady Navier Stokes equation around small Landau solutions

In this paper we study the large distance asymptotics of small steady solutions of the 3d Navier Stokes equation in exterior domains. It was proved by Korolev and the second author \cite{SverakKorolev} that the leading term is given by the Landau solution, and it was conjectured that the next order term should be $O(1/|x|^2)$ as $x\to\infty$. We confirm that this is indeed the case and we compute the next order asymptotics in terms of eigenvalues of a suitably constructed linearized operator around the Landau solution on the unit sphere. While the decay of some of the terms is precisely $O(1/|x|^2)$, the the decay of other terms is slightly accelerated.

Numerical investigations of non-uniqueness for the Navier-Stokes initial value problem in borderline spaces

We consider the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for a one-parameter family of explicit scale-invariant axi-symmetric initial data, which is smooth away from the origin and invariant under the reflection with respect to the $xy$-plane. Working in the class of axi-symmetric fields, we calculate numerically scale-invariant solutions of the Cauchy problem in terms of their profile functions, which are smooth. The solutions are necessarily unique for small data, but for large data we observe a breaking of the reflection symmetry of the initial data through a pitchfork-type bifurcation. By a variation of previous results by Jia & Šverák (2013) it is known rigorously that if the behavior seen here numerically can be proved, optimal non-uniqueness examples for the Cauchy problem can be established, and two different solutions can exists for the same initial datum which is divergence-free, smooth away from the origin, compactly supported, and locally $(-1)$-homogeneous near the origin. In particular, assuming our (finite-dimensional) numerics represents faithfully the behavior of the full (infinite-dimensional) system, the problem of uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf solutions (with non-smooth initial data) has a negative answer and, in addition, the perturbative arguments such those by Kato (1984) and Koch & Tataru (2001), or the weak-strong uniqueness results by Leray, Prodi, Serrin, Ladyzhenskaya and others, already give essentially optimal results. There are no singularities involved in the numerics, as we work only with smooth profile functions. It is conceivable that our calculations could be upgraded to a computer-assisted proof, although this would involve a substantial amount of additional work and calculations, including a much more detailed analysis of the asymptotic expansions of the solutions at large distances.

Are the incompressible 3d Navier-Stokes equations locally ill-posed in the natural energy space?

An important open problem in the theory of the Navier-Stokes equations is the uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf weak solutions with $L^2$ initial data. In this paper we give sufficient conditions for non-uniqueness in terms of spectral properties of a natural linear operator associated to scale-invariant solutions recently constructed in \cite{JiaSverak}. If the spectral conditions are satisfied, non-uniqueness and ill-posedness can appear for quite benign compactly supported data, just at the borderline of applicability of the classical perturbation theory. The verification of the spectral conditions seems to be approachable by relatively straightforward numerical simulations which involve only smooth functions.

On the Cauchy problem for axi-symmetric vortex rings

We consider the classical Cauchy problem for the 3d Navier-Stokes equation with the initial vorticity $ω_0$ concentrated on a circle, or more generally, a linear combination of such data for circles with common axis of symmetry. We show that natural approximations of the problem obtained by smoothing the initial data satisfy good a-priori estimates which enable us to conclude that the original problem with the singular initial distribution of vorticity has a solution. We impose no restriction on the size of the initial data.

Minimal $L^3$-initial data for potential Navier-Stokes singularities

We give a simple proof of the existence of initial data with minimal $L^3$ norm for potential Navier-Stokes singularities, recently established in (arXiv:1012.0145v2) with techniques based on profile decomposition. Our method is based on suitable splittings and energy methods.

Local structure of the set of steady-state solutions to the 2D incompressible Euler equations

It is well known that the incompressible Euler equations can be formulated in a very geometric language. The geometric structures provide very valuable insights into the properties of the solutions. Analogies with the finite-dimensional model of geodesics on a Lie group with left-invariant metric can be very instructive, but it is often difficult to prove analogues of finite-dimensional results in the infinite-dimensional setting of Euler's equations. In this paper we establish a result in this direction in the simple case of steady-state solutions in two dimensions, under some non-degeneracy assumptions. In particular, we establish, in a non-degenerate situation, a local one-to-one correspondence between steady-states and co-adjoint orbits.
