Probing optical and acoustic phonons in heated nano-Si/epoxy composites

Understanding the thermal response of optical and acoustic phonons is crucial for designing functional polymer nanocomposites. We study silicon nanoparticle (Si NP)-epoxy composites using combined Raman and Brillouin spectroscopy under local(laser-induced) and global(stage-controlled) heating. Raman spectra reveal THz longitudinal optical(LO) phonon softening and spectral broadening under local heating, indicating nanoscale hot-spots and interfacial scattering. Brillouin data track GHz longitudinal acoustic(LA) phonons, showing temperature- and concentration-dependent evolution of elasticity and damping. Contrasting heating methods unravels Si loading thresholds for isolated thermal absorbers, thermal percolation, acoustic attenuation and elastic homogenization. Local heating induces greater phonon softening and damping than global heating, with this disparity amplified at higher loadings by thermal gradients and interfacial dissipation. Global heating correlates with viscoelastic relaxation, showing intensified acoustic attenuation near the glass transition. Raman thermometry coupled with finite-element opto-thermal modeling allows evaluation of thermal conductivity of the composites characterized by increase from 0.09 to 0.46 W/(mK) for 0.07 up to 2 wt% of Si NPs, respectively, outperforming SiC nanowires at 2 wt% [D. Shen et al, Sci. Rep. 7, 2606 (2017)] despite bulk conductivity of Si being more than 3 times smaller than that of SiC. However, effective heat conductivity of our nanocomposites remain far below bulk Si, confirming that interfacial thermal resistance, not filler conductivity, governs heat transport.

ALVI Interface: Towards Full Hand Motion Decoding for Amputees Using sEMG

We present a system for decoding hand movements using surface EMG signals. The interface provides real-time (25 Hz) reconstruction of finger joint angles across 20 degrees of freedom, designed for upper limb amputees. Our offline analysis shows 0.8 correlation between predicted and actual hand movements. The system functions as an integrated pipeline with three key components: (1) a VR-based data collection platform, (2) a transformer-based model for EMG-to-motion transformation, and (3) a real-time calibration and feedback module called ALVI Interface. Using eight sEMG sensors and a VR training environment, users can control their virtual hand down to finger joint movement precision, as demonstrated in our video: youtube link.

Ptychographic characterization of polymer compound refractive lenses manufactured by additive technology

The recent success in the development of high precision printing techniques allows one to manufacture free-standing polymer structures of high quality. Two-photon polymerization lithography is a mask-less technique with down to 100 {\mu}m resolution that provides full geometric freedom. It has recently been applied to the nanofabrication of X-ray compound refractive lenses (CRLs). In this article we report on the characterization of two sets of CRLs of different design produced by two-photon polymerization induced lithography.

Chiral charge pumping in graphene deposited on a magnetic insulator

We demonstrate that a sizable chiral charge pumping can be achieved at room temperature in graphene/Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) bilayer systems. The effect, which cannot be attributed to the ordinary spin pumping, reveals itself in the creation of a dc electric field/voltage in graphene as a response to the dynamic magnetic excitations (spin waves) in an adjacent out-of-plane magnetized YIG film. We show that the induced voltage changes its sign when the orientation of the static magnetization is reversed, clearly indicating the broken spatial inversion symmetry in the studied system. The strength of effect shows a non-monotonous dependence on the spin-wave frequency, in agreement with the proposed theoretical model.
