Self-mappings of the quaternionic unit ball: multiplier properties, Schwarz-Pick inequality, and Nevanlinna--Pick interpolation problem

We study several aspects concerning slice regular functions mapping the quaternionic open unit ball into itself. We characterize these functions in terms of their Taylor coefficients at the origin and identify them as contractive multipliers of the Hardy space. In addition, we formulate and solve the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in the class of such functions presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and for the uniqueness of a solution. Finally, we describe all solutions to the problem in the indeterminate case.

Weighted Bergman spaces: shift-invariant subspaces and input/state/output linear systems

It is well known that subspaces of the Hardy space over the unit disk which are invariant under the backward shift occur as the image of an observability operator associated with a discrete-time linear system with stable state-dynamics, as well as the functional-model space for a Hilbert space contraction operator, while forward shift-invariant subspaces have a representation in terms of an inner function. We discuss several variants of these statements in the context of weighted Bergman spaces on the unit disk.

Contractive multipliers from Hardy space to weighted Hardy space

It is shown how any contractive multiplier from the Hardy space to a weighted Hardy space $H^{2}_{\bbeta}$ can be factored as a fixed factor composed with the classical Schur multiplier (contractive multiplier between Hardy spaces). The result is applied to get results on interpolation for a Hardy-to-weighted-Hardy contractive multiplier class.

Canonical transfer-function realization for Schur multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space and models for commuting row contractions

We develop a $d$-variable analog of the two-component de Bran-ges-Rovnyak reproducing kernel Hilbert space associated with a Schur-class function on the unit disk. In this generalization, the unit disk is replaced by the unit ball in $d$-dimensional complex Euclidean space, and the Schur class becomes the class of contractive multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space over the ball. We also develop some results on a model theory for commutative row contractions which are not necessarily completely noncoisometric (the case considered in earlier work of Bhattacharyya, Eschmeier and Sarkar)

On a multi-point interpolation problem for generalized Schur functions

The nondegenerate Nevanlinna-Pick-Carathéodory-Fejer interpolation problem with finitely many interpolation conditions always has infinitely many solutions in a generalized Schur class $\cS_κ$ for every $κ\ge κ_{\rm min}$ where the integer $κ_{\rm min}$ equals the number of negative eigenvalues of the Pick matrix associated to the problem and completely determined by interpolation data. A linear fractional description of all $\cS_{κ_{\rm min}}$ solutions of the (nondegenerate) problem is well known. In this paper, we present a similar result for an arbitrary $κ\ge κ_{\rm min}$.

On degenerate Hamburger moment problem and extensions of positive semidefinite Hankel block matrices

In this paper we consider two related objects: singular positive semidefinite Hankel block--matrices and associated degenerate truncated matrix Hamburger moment problems. The description of all solutions of a degenerate matrix Hamburger moment problem is given in terms of a linear fractional transformation. The case of interest is the Hamburger moment problem whose Hankel block--matrix admits a positive semidefinite Hankel extension.

Boundary rigidity for some classes of meromorphic functions

Sufficient boundary asymptotic conditions are established for a generalized Schur function $f$ to be identically equal to a given rational function $g$ unimodular on the unit circle. Similar rigidity statements are presented for generalized Carathéodory and generalized Nevanlinna functions.

Multivariable backward-shift-invariant subspaces and observability operators

It is well known that subspaces of the Hardy space over the unit disk which are invariant under the backward shift occur as the image of an observability operator associated with a discrete-time linear system with stable state-dynamics, as well as the functional-model space for a Hilbert space contraction operator. We discuss two multivariable extensions of this structure, where the classical Hardy space is replaced by (1) the Fock space of formal power series in a collection of $d$ noncommuting indeterminates with norm-square-summable vector coefficients, and (2) the reproducing kernel Hilbert space (often now called the Arveson space) over the unit ball in ${\mathbb C}^{d}$ with reproducing kernel $k(λ, ζ) = 1/(1 - < λ, ζ>)$ ($\lam, ζ\in {\mathbb C}^{d}$ with $\| λ\|, \| ζ\| < 1$). In the first case, the associated linear system is of noncommutative Fornasini-Marchesini type with evolution along a free semigroup with $d$ generators, while in the second case the linear system is a standard (commutative) Fornasini-Marchesini-type system with evolution along the integer lattice ${\mathbb Z}^{d}$. An abelianization map (or symmetrization of the Fock space) links the first case with the second. The second case has special features depending on whether the operator-tuple defining the state dynamics is commutative or not. The paper focuses on multidimensional state-output linear systems and the associated observability operators.

Schur-class multipliers on the Fock space: de Branges-Rovnyak reproducing kernel spaces and transfer-function realizations

We introduce and study a Fock-space noncommutative analogue of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of de Branges-Rovnyak type. Results include: use of the de Branges-Rovnyak space ${\mathcal H}(K_{S})$ as the state space for the unique (up to unitary equivalence) observable, coisometric transfer-function realization of the Schur-class multiplier $S$, realization-theoretic characterization of inner Schur-class multipliers, and a calculus for obtaining a realization for an inner multiplier with prescribed left zero-structure. In contrast with the parallel theory for the Arveson space on the unit ball ${\mathbb B}^{d} \subset {\mathbb C}^{d}$ (which can be viewed as the symmetrized version of the Fock space used here), the results here are much more in line with the classical univariate case, with the extra ingredient of the existence of all results having both a ``left'' and a ``right'' version.

Transfer-function realization for multipliers of the Arveson space

An interesting and recently much studied generalization of the classical Schur class is the class of contractive operator-valued multipliers for the reproducing kernel Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}(k_{d})$ on the unit ball ${\mathbb B}^{d} \subset {\mathbb C}^{d}$, where $k_{d}$ is the positive kernel $k_{d}(λ, ζ) = 1/(1 - < λ, ζ>)$ on ${\mathbb B}^{d}$. We study this space from the point of view of realization theory and functional models of de Branges-Rovnyak type. We highlight features which depart from the classical univariate case: coisometric realizations have only partial uniqueness properties, the nonuniqueness can be described explicitly, and this description assumes a particularly concrete form in the functional-model context.

Schur-class multipliers on the Arveson space: de Branges-Rovnyak reproducing kernel spaces and commutative transfer-function realizations

An interesting and recently much studied generalization of the classical Schur class is the class of contractive operator-valued multipliers $S$ for the reproducing kernel Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}(k_{d})$ on the unit ball ${\mathbb B}^{d} \subset {\mathbb C}^{d}$, where $k_{d}$ is the positive kernel $k_{d}(λ, ζ) = 1/(1 - < λ, ζ>)$ on ${\mathbb B}^{d}$. The reproducing kernel space ${\mathcal H}(K_{S})$ associated with the positive kernel $K_{S}(λ, ζ) = (I - S(λ) S(ζ)^{*}) \cdot k_{d}(λ, ζ)$ is a natural multivariable generalization of the classical de Branges-Rovnyak canonical model space. A special feature appearing in the multivariable case is that the space ${\mathcal H}(K_{S})$ in general may not be invariant under the adjoints $M_{λ_{j}}^{*}$ of the multiplication operators $M_{λ_{j}} \colon f(λ) \mapsto λ_{j} f(λ)$ on ${\mathcal H}(k_{d})$. We show that invariance of ${\mathcal H}(K_{S})$ under $M_{λ_{j}}^{*}$ for each $j = 1, ..., d$ is equivalent to the existence of a weakly coisometric realization for $S$ of the form $S(λ) = D + C (I - λ_{1}A_{1} ... - λ_{d} A_{d})^{-1}(λ_{1}B_{1} + ... + λ_{d} B_{d})$ such that the state operators $A_{1}, ..., A_{d}$ pairwise commute. We show that this special situation always occurs for the case of inner functions $S$ (where the associated multiplication operator $M_{S}$ is a partial isometry), and that inner multipliers are characterized by the existence of such a realization such that the state operators $A_{1}, >..., A_{d}$ satisfy an additional stability property.

A uniqueness result on boundary interpolation

Let $f$ be an analytic function mapping the unit disk $\D$ to itself. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the local behavior of $f$ near a finite set of boundary points that requires $f$ to be a finite Blaschke product.

Interpolation in the noncommutative Schur-Agler class

The class of Schur-Agler functions over a domain ${\mathcal D} \subset {\mathbb C}^{d}$ is defined as the class of holomorphic operator-valued functions on ${\mathcal D}$ for which a certain von Neumann inequality is satisfied when a commuting tuple of operators satisfying a certain polynomial norm inequality is plugged in for the variables. Such functions are alternatively characterized as those having a linear-fractional presentation which identifies them as transfer functions of a certain type of conservative structured multidimensional linear system. There now has been introduced a noncommutative version of the Schur-Agler class which consists of formal power series in noncommuting indeterminants satisfying a noncommutative version of the von Neumann inequality when a tuple of operators (not necessarily commuting) coming from a noncommutative operator ball are plugged in for the formal indeterminants. Formal power series in this noncommutative Schur-Agler class in turn are characterized as those having a certain linear-fractional presentation in noncommuting variables identifying them as transfer functions of a recently introduced class of conservative structure multidimensional linear systems having evolution along a free semigroup rather than along an integer lattice. The purpose of this paper is to extend the previously developed interpolation theory for the commutative Schur-Agler class to this noncommutative setting.
