Solvent-Directed Femtosecond Laser Ablation: Tuning Phase and Defect Engineering in Hybrid CdPS3/CdS Nanostructures

The limited visible-light absorption of wide-bandgap van der Waals crystals fundamentally restricts their utility in solar energy conversion. Here, we report a surfactant-free, solvent-directed laser synthesis strategy to engineer the phase and optoelectronic properties of Cadmium Phosphorus Trisulfide (CdPS3). By exploiting the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of femtosecond pulsed laser ablation in liquid (fs-PLAL), we demonstrate a tunable transition from the stoichiometric ternary phase to a highly active binary-rich heterostructure. While ablation in water preserves the monoclinic CdPS3 lattice, the reducing environment of isopropanol triggers the formation of CdS quantum dots and metallic cadmium defect sites. This solvent-induced phase engineering transforms the ultraviolet-active host into a robust visible-light photocatalyst. The resulting hybrid CdPS3/CdS nanocolloids exhibit superior charge separation efficiency, driven by Schottky-like metal-semiconductor junctions, achieving ~ 90% degradation of Methylene Blue under 532 nm irradiation within 30 minutes. This work establishes fs-PLAL as a scalable defect-engineering tool for complex ternary layered materials, offering a new design of high-performance metal-thiophosphate-based photocatalysts.

Negative terahertz conductivity at vertical carrier injection in a black-Arsenic-Phosphorus-Graphene heterostructure integrated with a light-emitting diode

We propose and analyze the heterostructure comprising a black-arsenic-phosphorus layer (b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L) and a graphene layer (GL) integrated with a light-emitting diode (LED). The integrated b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L-GL-LED heterostructure can serve as an active part of the terahertz (THz) laser using the interband radiative transitions in the GL. The feasibility of the proposed concept is enabled by the combination of relatively narrow energy gap in the b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L and the proper band alignment with the GL. The operation of the device in question is associated with the generation of the electron-hole pairs by the LED emitted near-infrared radiation in the b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L, cooling of the photogenerated electrons and holes in this layer, and their injection into the GL. Since the minimum b-As$_{1-x}$PL energy gap is smaller than the energy of optical phonons in the GL, , the injection into the GL can lead to a relatively weak heating of the two-dimensional electron-hole plasma (2D-EHP) in the GL. At the temperatures somewhat lower than the room temperature, the injection can cool the 2D-EHP. This is beneficial for the interband population inversion in the GL, reinforcement of its negative dynamic conductivity, %in the THz range and the realization of the optical and plasmonic modes lasing supporting the new types of the THz radiation sources.

Coherent terahertz needle radiation emission mechanism from nanostructured ferromagnetic metal films excited by femtosecond laser pulses

A coherent terahertz needle radiation emission mechanism is proposed. This mechanism can be realized in the experiments on femtosecond laser pulses interacting with surface of nanostructured ferromagnetic metal film. The proposed mechanism is based on exciting of coupled coherent phonon-magnon modes on a nanostructured metal surface by laser femtosecond pulse. The value of the Poynting vector for the terahertz radiation is estimated.
