Equivariant formality and the cohomology of subgroups of right-angled Coxeter groups

We construct models for the classifying spaces of coabelian subgroups of right-angled Coxeter groups as homotopy orbit spaces of real moment-angle complexes, generalizing well-known models for the classifying space of a right-angled Coxeter group and its commutator subgroup. This identifies the cohomology of these groups with the Borel equivariant cohomology of elementary abelian $2$-group actions on cubical subcomplexes of a cube $[-1,1]^m$. We then characterize equivariant formality for these actions, leading to a simple graph-theoretic criterion for when the cohomology of a coabelian subgroup is free as a module over the cohomology of the quotient by the commutator subgroup of the right-angled Coxeter group.

Three-Dimensional Small Covers and Links

We study certain orientation-preserving involutions on three-dimensional small covers. We prove that the quotient space of an orientable three-dimensional small cover by such an involution in $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$ is homeomorphic to a connected sum of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$. If this quotient space is a 3-sphere, then the corresponding small cover is a two-fold branched covering of the 3-sphere along a link. We provide a description of this link in terms of the polytope and the characteristic function.

Equivariantly formal 2-torus actions of complexity one

In this paper we study a specific class of actions of a $2$-torus $\mathbb{Z}_2^k$ on manifolds, namely, the actions of complexity one in general position. We describe the orbit space of equivariantly formal $2$-torus actions of complexity one in general position and restricted complexity one actions in the case of small covers. It is observed that the orbit spaces of such actions are topological manifolds. If the action is equivariantly formal, we prove that the orbit space is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology sphere. We study a particular subclass of these $2$-torus actions: restrictions of small covers to a subgroup of index 2 in general position. The subgroup of this form exists if and only if the small cover is orientable, and in this case we prove that the orbit space of a restricted $2$-torus action is homeomorphic to a sphere.

Toric orbit spaces which are manifolds

We characterize the actions of compact tori on smooth manifolds for which the orbit space is a topological manifold (either closed or with boundary). For closed manifolds the result was originally proved by Styrt in 2009. We give a new proof for closed manifolds which is also applicable to manifolds with boundary. In our arguments we use the result of Provan and Billera who characterized matroid complexes which are pseudomanifolds. We study the combinatorial structure of torus actions whose orbit spaces are manifolds. In two appendix sections we give an overview of two theories related to our work. The first one is the combinatorial theory of Leontief substitution systems from mathematical economics. The second one is the topological Kaluza--Klein model of Dirac's monopole studied by Atiyah. The aim of these sections is to draw some bridges between disciplines and motivate further studies in toric topology.
