3D XY Universality and Nonlinear magnetic susceptibility in a kagome ice compound

Kagome spin ice is an intriguing class of spin systems constituted by in-plane Ising spins with ferromagnetic interaction residing on the kagome lattice, theoretically predicted to host a plethora of magnetic transitions and excitations. In particular, different variants of kagome spin ice models can exhibit different sequences of symmetry breaking upon cooling from the paramagnetic to the fully ordered ground state. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the frustrated intermetallic HoAgGe stands as a faithful solid-state realization of kagome spin ice. Here we use single crystal neutron diffuse scattering to map the spin ordering of HoAgGe at various temperatures more accurately and surprisingly find that the ordering sequence appears to be different from previously known scenarios: From the paramagnetic state, the system first enters a partially ordered state with fluctuating magnetic charges, in contrast to a charge-ordered paramagnetic phase before reaching the fully ordered state. Through state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations and scaling analyses using a quasi-2D model for the distorted Kagome spin ice in HoAgGe, we elucidate a single three-dimensional (3D) XY phase transition into the ground state with broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS). However, the 3D XY transition has a long crossover tail before the fluctuating magnetic charges fully order. More interestingly, we find both experimentally and theoretically that the TRS breaking phase of HoAgGe features an unusual, hysteretic response: In spite of their vanishing magnetization, the two time-reversal partners are distinguished and selected by a nonlinear magnetic susceptibility tied to the kagome ice rule. Our discovery not only unveils a new symmetry breaking hierarchy of kagome spin ice, but also demonstrates the potential of TRS-breaking frustrated spin systems for information technology applications.

Magnetization density distribution of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$: Deviation from a local $j_\text{eff}=1/2$ picture

$5d$ iridium oxides are of huge interest due to the potential for new quantum states driven by strong spin-orbit coupling. The strontium iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is particularly in the spotlight because of the so-called $j_\text{eff}=1/2$ state consisting of a quantum superposition of the three local $t_{2g}$ orbitals with -- in its most simple version -- nearly equal population, which stabilizes an unconventional Mott insulating state. Here, we report an anisotropic and aspherical magnetization density distribution measured by polarized neutron diffraction in a magnetic field up to 5~T at 4~K, which strongly deviates from a local \jeffHalf picture even when distortion-induced deviations from the equal weights of the orbital populations are taken into account. Once reconstructed by the maximum entropy method and multipole expansion model refinement, the magnetization density shows cross-shaped positive four lobes along the crystallographic tetragonal axes with a large spatial extent, showing that the $xy$ orbital contribution is dominant. The analogy to the superconducting copper oxide systems might then be weaker than commonly thought.

Realization of the kagome spin ice state in a frustrated intermetallic compound

Spin ices are exotic phases of matter characterized by frustrated spins obeying local ice rules, in analogy with the electric dipoles in water ice. In two dimensions, one can similarly define ice rules for in-plane Ising-like spins arranged on a kagome lattice. These ice rules require each triangle plaquette to have a single monopole, and can lead to various unique orders and excitations. Using experimental and theoretical approaches including magnetometry, thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we establish HoAgGe as a crystalline (i.e. non-artificial) system that realizes the kagome spin ice state. The system features a variety of partially and fully ordered states and a sequence of field-induced phases at low temperatures, all consistent with the kagome ice rule.

Absence of zero-point entropy in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet

Frustrated Ising magnets host exotic excitations, such as magnetic monopoles in spin ice. The ground state (GS) in this case is characterized by an extensive degeneracy and associated residual entropy going back to the pioneering work by G. Wannier who established large residual entropy of nearly 50%Rln2 per mole spins in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet (TIAF) already in 1950. Here, we endeavor to verify this result experimentally using TmMgGaO4, a novel rare-earth-based frustrated antiferromagnet with Ising spins arranged on a perfect triangular lattice. Contrary to theoretical expectations, we find almost no residual entropy and ascribe this result to the presence of a weak second-neighbor coupling J2zz ~ 0.09J1zz that lifts the GS degeneracy and gives rise to several ordered states, the stripe order, 1/3-plateau, and 1/2-plateau. TmMgGaO4 gives experimental access to these novel phases of Ising spins on the triangular lattice.

Origin of forbidden reflections in multiferroic Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ by neutron diffraction: Symmetry lowering or Renninger effect?

For a symmetry consistent theoretical description of the multiferroic phase of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ a precise knowledge of its crystal structure is a prerequisite. In our previous synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment on multiferroic Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ at room temperature we found forbidden reflections that favour the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic symmetry lowering of the titled compound. Here, we report the results of room-temperature single-crystal diffraction studies with both hot and cold neutrons to differentiate between the real symmetry lowering and multiple diffraction (the Renninger effect). A comparison of the experimental multiple diffraction patterns with simulated ones rules out the symmetry lowering. Thus, the structural model based on the tetragonal space group $P\bar{4}2_1m$ was selected to describe the Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ symmetry at room temperature. The precise structural parameters from neutron diffraction at 300K are presented and compared with the previous X-ray diffraction results.

Control of multiferroic domains by external electric fields in TbMnO3

The control of multiferroic domains through external electric fields has been studied by dielectric measurements and by polarized neutron diffraction on single-crystalline TbMnO$_3$. Full hysteresis cycles were recorded by varying an external field of the order of several kV/mm and by recording the chiral magnetic scattering as well as the charge in a sample capacitor. Both methods yield comparable coercive fields that increase upon cooling.
