Interplay between uniaxial strain and magnetophonon resonance in graphene

We study the fine structure of the phonon G peak in the inelastic light scattering spectra of strained graphene in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field. We show that under the conditions of the magnetophonon resonance (MPR), the spectral line shape in Raman spectra of the Γ-point longitudinal optic-transverse optical phonon undergoes multiple splitting and acquires a strong dependence on the polarization of the incoming and detected light. Interference of strain and MPR leads to the modification of the anticrossing branches, introducing the variation of the light polarization preferences depending on the proximity to the resonance, and their better resolution between neighboring anticrossings.

Transport signatures of pseudo-magnetic Landau levels in strained graphene ribbons

In inhomogeneously strained graphene, low-energy electrons experience a valley-antisymmetric pseudo-magnetic field which leads to the formation of localized states at the edge between the valence and conduction bands, understood in terms of peculiar n=0 pseudo-magnetic Landau levels. Here we show that such states can manifest themselves as an isolated quadruplet of low-energy conductance resonances in a suspended stretched graphene ribbon, where clamping by the metallic contacts results in a strong inhomogeneity of strain near the ribbon ends.

Role of electronic excitations in magneto-Raman spectra of graphene

We investigate the signature of the low-energy electronic excitations in the Raman spectrum of monolayer and bilayer graphenes. The dominant contribution to the Raman spectra is due to the interband electron-hole pairs, which belong to the irreducible representation A$_2$ of the point group C$_{6v}$ of the graphene lattice, and are characterised by crossed polarisation of incoming and outgoing photons. At high magnetic fields, this is manifested by the excitation of electron-hole (e-h) inter-Landau-level transitions with selection rule $n^-\to n^+$. Weaker Raman-active inter-Landau-level modes also exist. One of those has a selection rule similar to the infrared absorption process, $n^-\to(n\pm1)^+$, but the created e-h excitation belongs to the irreducible representation E$_2$ (rather than E$_1$) and couples to the optical phonon mode, thus undergoing an anticrossing with the optical phonon G-line in Raman in strong magnetic field. The fine structure of acquired by the G-line due to such anticrossing depends on the carrier density, inhomogeneity of doping, and presence of inhomogeneous strain in the sample.

Optical manifestations of symmetry breaking in bilayer graphene

We propose a spectroscopic method of identifying broken symmetry states of bilayer graphene. We demonstrate theoretically that, in contrast to gapped states, a strained bilayer crystal or nematic phase of the electronic liquid are distinguishable by the dependence of the lineshape of absorption on the polarization of the light. This property is characteristic for both the infrared and far-infrared spectral ranges, which correspond to the absorption by transitions between low-energy bands and split bands, and transitions between the low-energy valence and conduction bands, respectively.

Phases of the excitonic condensate in two-layer graphene

Two graphene monolayers that are oppositely charged and placed close to each other are considered. Taking into account valley and spin degeneracy of electrons we analyze the symmetry of the excitonic insulator states in such a system and build a phase diagram that takes into account the effect of the symmetry breaking due to the external in-plane magnetic field and the carrier density imbalance between the layers.

Classical and quantum magneto-oscillations of current flow near a p-n junction in graphene

The proposed semiclassical theory predicts two types of oscillations in the flow of current injected from a point source near a ballistic p-n junction in graphene in a strong magnetic field. One originates from the classical effect of bunching of cyclotron orbits of electrons passing back and forth across the p-n interface, which displays a pronounced dependence on the commensurability between the cyclotron radii in the n- and p-regions. The other effect is caused by the interference of monochromatic electron waves in p-n junctions with equal carrier densities on the two sides and it consists in magneto-oscillations in the current transmission through the interface with periodicity similar to Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations.

Conductance anomaly near the Lifshitz transition in strained bilayer graphene

Strain qualitatively changes the low-energy band structure of bilayer graphene, leading to the appearance of a pair of low-energy Dirac cones near each corner of the Brillouin zone, and a Lifshitz transition, (a saddle point in the dispersion relation) at an energy proportional to the strain [M. Mucha-Kruczynski, I.L. Aleiner, and V.I. Fal'ko, Phys. Rev. B 84, 041404 (2011)]. Here, we show that in the vicinity of the Lifshitz transition the conductance of a ballistic n-p and n-p-n junction exhibits an anomaly: a non-monotonic temperature and chemical potential dependence, with the size depending on the crystallographic orientation of the principal axis of the strain tensor. This effect is characteristic for junctions between regions of different polarity (n-p and n-p-n junctions), while there is no anomaly in junctions between regions of the same polarity (n-n' and n-n'-n junctions).

z/-z Symmetry of spin-orbit coupling and weak localization in graphene

We show that the influence of spin-orbit (SO) coupling on the weak localization effect for electrons in graphene depends on the lack or presence of z/-z symmetry in the system. While for z/-z asymmetric SO coupling, disordered graphene should display a weak anti-localization behavior at lowest temperature, z/-z symmetric coupling leads to an effective saturation of decoherence time which can be partially lifted by an in-plane magnetic field, thus, tending to restore the weak localization effect.

Selection rules for Raman-active electronic excitations in carbon nanotubes

Raman measurements in carbon allotropes are generally associated with the exploration of the vibrational modes. Here, we present a theory of the non-resonant inelastic light scattering accompanied by the excitations of intersubband electron-hole pairs in carbon nanotubes and predict the selection rules and polarization properties of the dominant intersubband Raman active modes.

Skipping and snake orbits of electrons: singularities and catastrophes

Near the sample edge, or a sharp magnetic field step the drift of two-dimensional electrons in a magnetic field has the form of skipping/snake orbits. We show that families of skipping/snake orbits of electrons injected at one point inside a 2D metal generically exhibit caustics folds, cusps and cusp triplets, and, in one extreme case, a section of the batterfly bifurcation. Periodic appearance of singularities along the $\pm B$-interface leads to the magneto-oscillations of nonlocal conductance in multi-terminal electronic devices.

Strained bilayer graphene: Band structure topology and Landau level spectrum

We show that topology of the low-energy band structure in bilayer graphene critically depends on mechanical deformations of the crystal which may easily develop in suspended graphene flakes. We describe the Lifshitz transition that takes place in strained bilayers upon splitting the parabollic bands at intermediate energies into several Dirac cones at the energy scale of few meV. Then, we show how this affects the electron Landau level spectra and the quantum Hall effect.

Intra-Landau level magnetoexcitons and the transition between quantum Hall states in undoped bilayer graphene

We study the collective modes of the quantum Hall states in undoped bilayer graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic and electric field. Both for the well-known ferromagnetic state that is relevant for small electric field $E_\perp$ and the analogous valley/layer polarized one suitable for large $E_\perp$, the low energy physics is dominated by magnetoexcitons with zero angular momentum that are even combinations of excitons that conserve Landau orbitals. We identify a long wave length instability in both states, and argue that there is an intermediate range of the electric field $E^{(1)}_\text{c} < E_\perp < E^{(2)}_\text{c}$ where a gapless phase interpolates between the incompressible quantum Hall states. The experimental relevance of this crossover via a gapless state is discussed.

Transport anomaly at the ordering transition for adatoms on graphene

We analyze a manifestation of the partial ordering transition of adatoms on graphene in resistivity measurements. We find that Kekule mosaic ordering of adatoms increases sheet resistance of graphene, due to a gap opening in its spectrum, and that critical fluctuations of the order parameter lead to a non-monotonic temperature dependence of resistivity, with a cusp-like minimum at T=T_c.

Gauge fields and interferometry in folded graphene

Folded graphene flakes are a natural byproduct of the micromechanical exfoliation process. In this Letter we show by a combination of analytical and numerical methods that such systems behave as intriguing interferometers due to the interplay between an externally applied magnetic field and the gauge field induced by the deformations in the region of the fold.

Charge transfer between epitaxial graphene and silicon carbide

We analyse doping of graphene grown on SiC in two models which differ by the source of charge transfered to graphene, namely, from SiC surface and from bulk donors. For each of the two models, we find the maximum electron density induced in monolayer and bilayer graphene, which is determined by the difference between the work function for electrons in pristine graphene and donor states on/in SiC, and analyse the responsivity of graphene to the density variation by means of electrostatic gates.

Signature of electronic excitations in the Raman spectrum of graphene

Inelastic light scattering from Dirac-type electrons in graphene is shown to be dominated by the generation of the inter-band electronic modes which are odd in terms of time-inversion symmetry and belong to the irreducible representation A$_2$ of the point group C$_{6v}$ of the honeycomb crystal. At high magnetic fields, these electron-hole excitations appear as peculiar $n^- \to n^+$ inter-Landau-level modes with energies $ω_n=2\sqrt{2n} \hbar v/λ_B$ and characteristically crossed polarisation of in/out photons.

Filling-Factor-Dependent Magnetophonon Resonance in Graphene

We describe a peculiar fine structure acquired by the in-plane optical phonon at the Gamma-point in graphene when it is brought into resonance with one of the inter-Landau-level transitions in this material. The effect is most pronounced when this lattice mode (associated with the G-band in graphene Raman spectrum) is in resonance with inter-Landau-level transitions 0 -> (+,1) and (-,1) -> 0, at a magnetic field B_0 ~ 30 T. It can be used to measure the strength of the electron-phonon coupling directly, and its filling-factor dependence can be used experimentally to detect circularly polarized lattice modes.

The effect of the electron-electron interaction on the Lifshitz transition density in bilayer graphene

We study the renormalization of the effective mass and trigonal warping of bilayer graphene by the electron-electron interaction. One consequence of such a renormalization in the low-energy bands of a bilayer crystal consists of a small reduction of the critical density of the Lifshitz transition (the crossover between the single-pocket and four-pocket topology of the Fermi surface).
