Polynomial-like elements in vector spaces with group actions

In this paper, we study polynomial-like elements in vector spaces equipped with group actions. We first define these elements via iterated difference operators. In the case of a full rank lattice acting on an Euclidean space, these polynomial-like elements are exactly polynomials with periodic coefficients, which are closely related to solutions of periodic differential equations. Our main theorem confirms that if the space of polynomial-like elements of degree zero is of finite dimension then for any $n \in \mathbb{Z}_+$, the space consisting of all polynomial-like elements of degree at most $n$ is also finite dimensional.

Automorphism Groups of Configuration Spaces and Discriminant Varieties

The configuration space $\mathcal{C}^n(X)$ of an algebraic curve $X$ is the algebraic variety consisting of all $n$-point subsets $Q\subset X$. We describe the automorphisms of $\mathcal{C}^n(\mathbb{C})$, deduce that the (infinite dimensional) group Aut$\,\mathcal{C}^n(\mathbb{C})$ is solvable, and obtain an analog of the Mostow decomposition in this group. The Lie algebra and the Makar-Limanov invariant of $\mathcal{C}^n(\mathbb{C})$ are also computed. We obtain similar results for the level hypersurfaces of the discriminant, including its singular zero level. This is an extended version of our paper \cite{Lin-Zaidenberg14}. We strengthened the results concerning the automorphism groups of cylinders over rigid bases, replacing the rigidity assumption by the weaker assumption of tightness. We also added alternative proofs of two auxiliary results cited in \cite{Lin-Zaidenberg14} and due to Zinde and to the first author. This allowed us to provide the optimal dimension bounds in our theorems.

Configuration spaces of C and CP^1: some analytic properties

We study holomorphic self-maps of non-ordered n-point configuration spaces C^n(X), where X is either affine or projective complex line. The complex Lie group Aut(X) acts diagonally on C^n(X). We prove that for n>4 every endomorphism F of C^n(X) either is tame meaning that it is of the form F(Q)=T(Q)Q for a certain morphism T of C^n(X) to Aut(X) or carries the whole C^n(X) into one Aut(X) orbit Aut(X)Q_0 in C^n(X). The first option happens if and only if the image of the induced endomorphism F_* of the fundamental group of C^n(X) (which is the braid group of X) is a non-cyclic group; otherwise F is of the second type. We also prove that for n>(dim(Aut(X))+1 a morphism F of C^n(X) to any C^k(X) always admits an n point subset Q of X whose intersection with its image F(Q) is non-empty. Finally, we give a complete description of unbranched k-coverings of C^n(x) for k<2n+1.

Braids and Permutations

E. Artin described all irreducible representations of the braid group B_k to the symmetric group S(k). We strengthen some of his results and, moreover, exhibit a complete picture of homomorphisms of B_k to S(n) for n<2k+1. We show that the image of such ahomomorphism f is cyclic whenever either (*) n 6 there exist, up to conjugation, exactly 3 irreducible representations of B_k into S(2k) with non-cyclic images but they all are imprimitive. We use these results to prove that for n 4 the intersection PB_k\cap B'_k of PB_k with the commutator subgroup B'_k=[B_k,B_k] is a completely characteristic subgroup of B'_k.

Liouville and Carathéodory coverings in Riemannian and complex geometry

A Riemannian manifold resp. a complex space $X$ is called Liouville if it carries no nonconstant bounded harmonic resp. holomorphic functions. It is called Carathéodory, or Carathéodory hyperbolic, if bounded harmonic resp. holomorphic functions separate the points of $X$. The problems which we discuss in this paper arise from the following question: When a Galois covering $X$ with Galois group $G$ over a Liouville base $Y$ is Liouville or, at least, is not Carathéodory hyperbolic?
