Density-dependent interactions and structure of charged colloidal dispersions in the weak screening regime

We determine the structure of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions at low ionic strength over an extended range of particle volume fractions using a combination of light and small angle neutron scattering experiments. The variation of the structure factor with concentration is analyzed within a one-component model of a colloidal suspension. We show that the observed structural behavior corresponds to a non-monotonic density dependence of the colloid effective charge and the mean interparticle interaction energy. Our findings are corroborated by similar observations from primitive model computer simulations of salt-free colloidal suspensions.

Brownian dynamics of a microswimmer

We report on dynamic properties of a simple model microswimmer composed of three spheres and propelling itself in a viscous fluid by spinning motion of the spheres under zero net torque constraint. At a fixed temperature and increasing the spinning frequency, the swimmer demonstrates a transition from dissipation-dominated to a pumping-dominated motion regime characterized by negative effective friction coefficient. In the limit of high frequencies, the diffusion of the swimmer can be described by a model of an active particle with constant velocity.

Dynamics and stability of dispersions of polyelectrolyte-filled multilayer microcapsules

We report dynamic and coagulation properties of a dispersion of polyelectrolyte multilayer microcapsules filled with solutions of a strong polyelectrolyte. The capsule self-diffusion coefficient in the vicinity of the wall is measured using a particle tracking procedure from confocal images of the dispersion. Our results suggest that the microcapsules take a charge of encapsulated polyions, which indicates a semi-permeability of the shell and a leakage of counter-ions. The diffusion of capsules in the force field is qualitatively similar to that of charged solid particles: The effective interaction potential contains a weak local attractive minimum and an electrostatic barrier. We also found that the aggregation of suspended capsules occurs faster than their sedimentation and adhesion onto a glass surface.

Ground state structure and interactions between dimeric 2D Wigner crystals

We study the ground state ordering and interactions between two two-dimensional Wigner crystals on neutralizing charged plates by means of computer simulation. We consider crystals formed by (i) point-like charges and (ii) charged dimers, which mimic the screening of charged surfaces by elongated multivalent ions such as aspherical globular proteins, charged dendrimers or short stiff polyelectrolytes. Both systems, with point-like and dimeric ions, display five distinct crystalline phases on increasing the interlayer distance. In addition to alteration of translational ordering within the bilayer, the phase transitions in the dimeric system are characterized by alteration of orientational ordering of the ions.

Electrophoresis of colloidal dispersions in the low-salt regime

We study the electrophoretic mobility of spherical charged colloids in a low-salt suspension as a function of the colloidal concentration. Using an effective particle charge and a reduced screening parameter, we map the data for systems with different particle charges and sizes, including numerical simulation data with full electrostatics and hydrodynamics and experimental data for latex dispersions, on a single master curve. We observe two different volume fraction-dependent regimes for the electrophoretic mobility that can be explained in terms of the static properties of the ionic double layer.

Macroion correlation effects in electrostatic screening and thermodynamics of highly charged colloids

We study macroion correlation effects on the thermodynamics of highly charged colloidal suspensions using a mean-field theory and primitive model computer simulations. We suggest a simple way to include the macroion correlations into the mean-field theory as an extension of the renormalized jellium model of Trizac and Levin [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 69}, 031403 (2004)]. The effective screening parameters extracted from our mean-field approach are then used in a one-component model with macroions interacting via Yukawa-like potential to predict macroion distributions. We find that inclusion of macroion correlations leads to a weaker screening and hence smaller effective macroion charge and lower osmotic pressure of the colloidal dispersion as compared to other mean-field models. This result is supported by a comparison to primitive model simulations and experiments for charged macroions in the low-salt regime, where the macroion correlations are expected to be significant.

Electrophoretic mobility of a charged colloidal particle: A computer simulation study

We study the mobility of a charged colloidal particle in a constant homogeneous electric field by means of computer simulations. The simulation method combines a lattice Boltzmann scheme for the fluid with standard Langevin dynamics for the colloidal particle, which is built up from a net of bonded particles forming the surface of the colloid. The coupling between the two subsystems is introduced via friction forces. In addition explicit counterions, also coupled to the fluid, are present. We observe a non-monotonous dependence of the electrophoretic mobility on the bare colloidal charge. At low surface charge density we observe a linear increase of the mobility with bare charge, whereas at higher charges, where more than half of the ions are co-moving with the colloid, the mobility decreases with increasing bare charge.

A new model for simulating colloidal dynamics

We present a new hybrid lattice-Boltzmann and Langevin molecular dynamics scheme for simulating the dynamics of suspensions of spherical colloidal particles. The solvent is modeled on the level of the lattice-Boltzmann method while the molecular dynamics is done for the solute. The coupling between the two is implemented through a frictional force acting both on the solvent and on the solute, which depends on the relative velocity. A spherical colloidal particle is represented by interaction sites at its surface. We demonstrate that this scheme quantitatively reproduces the translational and rotational diffusion of a neutral spherical particle in a liquid and show preliminary results for a charged spherical particle. We argue that this method is especially advantageous in the case of charged colloids.

On the nature of long-range contributions to pair interactions between charged colloids in two dimensions

We perform a detailed analysis of solutions of the inverse problem applied to experimentally measured two-dimensional radial distribution functions for highly charged latex dispersions. The experiments are carried out at high colloidal densities and under low-salt conditions. At the highest studied densities, the extracted effective pair potentials contain long-range attractive part. At the same time, we find that for the best distribution functions available the range of stability of the solutions is limited by the nearest neighbour distance between the colloidal particles. Moreover, the measured pair distribution functions can be explained by purely repulsive pair potentials contained in the stable part of the solution.

Effective macroion charge and stability of highly asymmetric electrolytes at various salt conditions

We study electrostatic mechanisms of destabilization of highly asymmetric electrolytes. For this purpose, we perform primitive model Monte Carlo simulations of charged macroions immersed in multivalent salt solution. At low salt concentration, the macroion effective charge is reduced due to multivalent counterion adsorption. At high salt concentrations, the macroions become overcharged so that their apparent charge has the opposite sign to the stoichiometric one. The inverted charge is growing up to a saturation value upon further increasing the salinity. The system remains stable at low as well as at very high salt concentrations. In the intermediate region, close to the macroion isoelectric point, we observe macroion aggregation. The obtained phase behaviour closely resembles polyelectrolyte-induced instability of colloidal dispersions.
