Integral and isocapacitary inequalities

It is shown by a counterexample that isocapacitary and isoperimetric constants of a multi-dimensional Euclidean domain starshaped with respect to a ball are not equivalent. Sharp integral inequalities involving the harmonic capacity which imply Faber-Krahn property of the fundamental Dirichlet-Laplace eigenvalue are obtained. Necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring integral inequalities between a difference seminorm and the $L_p$-norm of the gradient are found.

On the fundamental solution of an elliptic equation in nondivergence form

We consider the existence and asymptotics for the fundamental solution of an elliptic operator in nondivergence form, ${\mathcal L}(x,\del_x)=a_{ij}(x)\del_i\del_i$, for $n\geq 3$. We assume that the coefficients have modulus of continuity satisfying the square Dini condition. For fixed $y$, we construct a solution of ${\mathcal L}Z_y(x)=0$ for $0<|x-y|<\e$ with explicit leading order term which is $O(|x-y|^{2-n}e^{I(x,y)})$ as $x\to y$, where $I(x,y)$ is given by an integral and plays an important role for the fundamental solution: if $I(x,y)$ approaches a finite limit as $x\to y$, then we can solve ${\mathcal L}(x,\del_x)F(x,y)=\de(x-y)$, and $F(x,y)$ is asymptotic as $x\to y$ to the fundamental solution for the constant coefficient operator ${\mathcal L}(y,\del_x)$. On the other hand, if $I(x,y)\to -\infty$ as $x\to y$ then the solution $Z_y(x)$ violates the "extended maximum principle" of Gilbarg & Serrin \cite{GS} and is a distributional solution of ${\mathcal L}(x,\del_x)Z_y(x)=0$ for $|x-y|<\e$ although $Z_y$ is not even bounded as $x\to y$.

Approximate Hermite quasi-interpolation

In this paper we derive approximate quasi-interpolants when the values of a function $u$ and of some of its derivatives are prescribed at the points of a uniform grid. As a byproduct of these formulas we obtain very simple approximants which provide high order approximations for solutions to elliptic differential equations with constant coefficients.

Conductor inequalities and criteria for Sobolev-Lorentz two-weight inequalities

In this paper we present integral conductor inequalities connecting the Lorentz p,q-(quasi)norm of a gradient of a function to a one-dimensional integral of the p,q-capacitance of the conductor between two level surfaces of the same function. These inequalities generalize an inequality obtained by the second author in the case of the Sobolev norm. Such conductor inequalities lead to necessary and sufficient conditions for Sobolev-Lorentz type inequalities involving two arbitrary measures.

Analytic criteria in the qualitative spectral analysis of the Schroedinger operator

A number of topics in the qualitative spectral analysis of the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+ V$ are surveyed. In particular, some old and new results concerning the positivity and semiboundedness of this operator as well as the structure of different parts of its spectrum are considered. The attention is focused on conditions both necessary and sufficient, as well as on their sharp corollaries.

The Dirichlet problem in Lipschitz domains for higher order elliptic systems with rough coefficients

We study the Dirichlet problem in Lipschitz domains and with boundary data in Besov spaces, for divergence form strongly elliptic systems of arbitrary order, with bounded, complex-valued coefficients. Our main result gives a sharp condition on the local mean oscillations of the coefficients of the differential operator and the unit normal to the boundary (which is automatically satisfied if these functions belong to space VMO) guaranteeing that the solution operator associated with this problem is an isomorphism.

Uniform asymptotic formulae for Green's kernels in regularly and singularly perturbed domains

Asymptotic formulae for Green's kernels $G_ε({\bf x}, {\bf y})$ of various boundary value problems for the Laplace operator are obtained in regularly perturbed domains and certain domains with small singular perturbations of the boundary, as $ε\to 0$. The main new feature of these asymptotic formulae is their uniformity with respect to the independent variables ${\bf x}$ and ${\bf y}$.

Asymptotics for solutions of elliptic equations in double divergence form

We consider weak solutions of the adjoint equation for an elliptic operator in nondivergent form, and their asymptotic properties at an interior point. We assume that the coefficients a_{ij} are bounded, measurable, complex-valued functions that approach δ_{ij}, but possibly at a slow rate. Our main result is an explicit formula for the leading asymptotic term for solutions with a most a mild singularity at x=0. As a consequence, we obtain upper and lower estimates for the L^p-norm of solutions, as well as necessary and sufficient conditions for solutions to be bounded or tend to zero in L^p-mean as r tends to zero.

Criteria for the $L^{p}$-dissipativity of systems of second order differential equations

We give complete algebraic characterizations of the $L^{p}$-dissipativity of the Dirichlet problem for some systems of partial differential operators of the form $\partial_{h}({\mathscr A}^{hk}(x)\partial_{k})$, were ${\mathscr A}^{hk}(x)$ are $m\times m$ matrices. First, we determine the sharp angle of dissipativity for a general scalar operator with complex coefficients. Next we prove that the two-dimensional elasticity operator is $L^{p}$-dissipative if and only if $$ ({1\over 2}-{1\over p})^{2} \leq {2(ν-1)(2ν-1)\over (3-4ν)^{2}}, $$ $ν$ being the Poisson ratio. Finally we find a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the $L^{p}$-dissipativity of the operator $\partial_{h} ({\mathscr A}^{h}(x)\partial_{h})$, where ${\mathscr A}^{h}(x)$ are $m\times m$ matrices with complex $L^{1}_{\rm loc}$ entries, and we describe the maximum angle of $L^{p}$-dissipativity for this operator.

Gauge optimization and spectral properties of magnetic Schrödinger operators

We establish new necessary and sufficient conditions for the discreteness of spectrum and strict positivity of magnetic Schrödinger operators with a positive scalar potential. They extend earlier results by Maz'ya and Shubin (2005), which were obtained in case when there is no magnetic field. We also derive two-sided estimates for the bottoms of spectrum and essential spectrum, extending results by Maz'ya and Otelbaev (1977). The main idea is to optimize the gauge of the magnetic field, thus reducing the quadratic form to one without magnetic field (but with an appropriately adjusted scalar potential).

Discreteness of spectrum and positivity criteria for Schrödinger operators

We provide a class of necessary and sufficient conditions for the discreteness of spectrum of Schrödinger operators with scalar potentials which are semibounded below. The classical discreteness of spectrum criterion by A.M.Molchanov (1953) uses a notion of negligible set in a cube as a set whose Wiener's capacity is less than a small constant times the capacity of the cube. We prove that this constant can be taken arbitrarily between 0 and 1. This solves a problem formulated by I.M.Gelfand in 1953. Moreover, we extend the notion of negligibility by allowing the constant to depend on the size of the cube. We give a complete description of all negligibility conditions of this kind. The a priori equivalence of our conditions involving different negligibility classes is a non-trivial property of the capacity. We also establish similar strict positivity criteria for the Schrödinger operators with non-negative potentials.

Can one see the fundamental frequency of a drum?

We establish two-sided estimates for the fundamental frequency (the lowest eigenvalue) of the Laplacian in an open subset G of R^n with the Dirichlet boundary condition. This is done in terms of the interior capacitary radius of G which is defined as the maximal possible radius of a ball B which has a negligible intersection with the complement of G. Here negligibility of a subset F in B means that the Wiener capacity of F does not exceed gamma times the capacity of B, where gamma is an arbitrarily fixed constant between 0 and 1. We provide explicit values of constants in the two-sided estimates.

The Dirichlet problem in Lipschitz domains with boundary data in Besov spaces for higher order elliptic systems with rough coefficients

We settle the issue of well-posedness for the Dirichlet problem for a higher order elliptic system ${\mathcal L}(x,D_x)$ with complex-valued, bounded, measurable coefficients in a Lipschitz domain $Ω$, with boundary data in Besov spaces. The main hypothesis under which our principal result is established is in the nature of best possible and requires that, at small scales, the mean oscillations of the unit normal to $\partialΩ$ and of the coefficients of the differential operator ${\mathcal L}(x,D_x)$ are not too large.

Criterion for the $L^{p}$-dissipativity of second order differential operators with complex coefficients

We prove that the algebraic condition $|p-2| |< {\mathscr Im}{\mathscr A}ξ,ξ>| \leq 2 \sqrt{p-1} < {\mathscr Re}{\mathscr A}ξ,ξ>$ (for any $ξ\in\mathbb{R}^{n}$) is necessary and sufficient for the $L^{p}$-dissipativity of the Dirichlet problem for the differential operator $\nabla^{t}({\mathscr A}\nabla)$, where ${\mathscr A}$ is a matrix whose entries are complex measures and whose imaginary part is symmetric. This result is new even for smooth coefficients, when it implies a criterion for the $L^{p}$-contractivity of the corresponding semigroup. We consider also the operator $\nabla^{t}({\mathscr A}\nabla)+{\bf b}\nabla +a$, where the coefficients are smooth and ${\mathscr Im}{\mathscr A}$ may be not symmetric. We show that the previous algebraic condition is necessary and sufficient for the $L^{p}$-quasi-dissipativity of this operator. The same condition is necessary and sufficient for the $L^{p}$-quasi-contractivity of the corresponding semigroup. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the $L^{p}$-dissipativity in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ of the operator $\nabla^{t}({\mathscr A}\nabla)+{\bf b}\nabla +a$ with constant coefficients.

Discreteness of spectrum and strict positivity criteria for magnetic Schrödinger operators

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the discreteness of spectrum and strict positivity of magnetic Schrödinger operators with a positive scalar potential. They are expressed in terms of Wiener's capacity and the local energy of the magnetic field. The conditions for the discreteness of spectrum depend on two functional parameters. One of them is a decreasing function of one variable whose argument is the normalized local energy of the magnetic field. This function enters the negligibility condition of sets for the scalar potential. We give a description for the range of admissible functional parameters which is precise in a certain sense. In case when there is no magnetic field, our results extend the discreteness of spectrum and positivity criteria by A.Molchanov (1953) and V.Maz'ya (1973).

The Wiener test for higher order elliptic equations

Wiener's criterion for the regularity of a boundary point with respect to the Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation has been extended to various classes of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. They include linear divergence and nondivergence equations with discontinuous coefficients, equations with degenerate quadratic form, quasilinear and fully nonlinear equations, as well as equations on Riemannian manifolds, graphs, groups, and metric spaces. A common feature of these equations is that all of them are of second order, and Wiener type characterizations for higher order equations have been unknown so far. Indeed, the increase of the order results in the loss of the maximum principle, Harnack's inequality, barrier techniques, and level truncation arguments, which are ingredients in different proofs related to the Wiener test for the second order equations. In the present work we extend Wiener's result to elliptic differential operators $L(\partial)$ of order $2m$ in the Euclidean space ${\bf R}^n$ with constant real coefficients $$L(\partial)=(-1)^m\sum_{|α|=|β|=m}a_{αβ} \partial^{α+ β}.$$ The results can be extended to equations with variable (for example, Hölder continuous) coefficients in divergence form but we leave aside this generalization to make exposition more lucid.
