Frequency shifts in the EPR spectrum of $^{39}$K due to spin-exchange collisions with polarized $^3$He and precise $^3$He polarimetry

The Zeeman splittings and EPR frequencies of alkali-metal atoms are shifted in the presence of a polarized noble gas. For a spherical geometry, the shift is enhanced over what is expected classically by a dimensionless atomic parameter $κ_0$ that is unique to each alkali-metal atom - noble-gas pair. We present a precise measurement of $κ_0$ for the $^{39}$K-$^3$He system with a relative accuracy of better than 1\%. A critical component of achieving sub-percent accuracy involved characterizing the shape of our samples using both MRI and CT medical-imaging techniques. The parameter $κ_0$ plays an important role in establishing the absolute polarization of $^3$He in a variety of contexts, including polarized targets for electron scattering experiments and MRI of the gas space of the lungs. Our measurement more than doubles the accuracy possible when using $κ_0$ for polarimetry purposes. Just as important, the work presented here represents the first {\it direct} measurement of $κ_0$ for the $^{39}$K-$^3$He system; previous values for $κ_0$ in the $^{39}$K-$^3$He system relied on a chain of measurements that were benchmarked by previous measurements of $κ_0$ in the Rb-$^3$He system.

High energy photon polarimeter for astrophysics

A high-energy photon polarimeter for astrophysics studies in the energy range from 10 MeV to 800 MeV is considered. The proposed concept uses a stack of silicon micro-strip detectors where they play the roles of both a converter and a tracker. The purpose of this paper is to outline the parameters of such a polarimeter and to estimate the productivity of measurements. Our study supported by a Monte Carlo simulation shows that with a one-year observation period the polarimeter will provide 6% accuracy of the polarization degree for photon energies above 100 MeV, which would be a significant advance relative to the currently explored energy range of a few MeV. The proposed polarimeter design could easily be adjusted to the specific photon energy range to maximize efficiency if needed.

Performance in Test Beam of a Large-area and Light-weight GEM detector with 2D Stereo-Angle (U-V) Strip Readout

A large-area and light-weight Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detector was built at the University of Virginia as a prototype for the detector R$\&$D program of the future Electron Ion Collider. The prototype has a trapezoidal geometry designed as a generic sector module in a disk layer configuration of a forward tracker in collider detectors. It is based on light-weight material and narrow support frames in order to minimize multiple scattering and dead-to-sensitive area ratio. The chamber has a novel type of two dimensional (2D) stereo-angle readout board with U-V strips that provides (r,$φ$) position information in the cylindrical coordinate system of a collider environment. The prototype was tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility in October 2013 and the analysis of the test beam data demonstrates an excellent response uniformity of the large area chamber with an efficiency higher than 95%. An angular resolution of 60 $μ$rad in the azimuthal direction and a position resolution better than 550 $μ$m in the radial direction were achieved with the U-V strip readout board. The results are discussed in this paper.

Large Size GEM for Super Bigbite Spectrometer (SBS) Polarimeter for Hall A 12 GeV program at JLab

We report on the R&D effort in the design and construction of a large size Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) for the Proton Polarimeter Back Tracker (BT) of the Super Bigbite Spectrometer (SBS) in Hall A at Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab). The SBS BT GEM trackers consist of two sets of five large GEM xchambers of size 60 x 200 cm2. The GEM chamber is a vertical stack of four GEM modules, each with an active area of 60 x 50 cm2. We have built and tested several prototypes and the construction of GEM modules for SBS BT is ongoing. We describe in this paper the design and construction of the GEM module prototype as well as the preliminary results on performance from tests carried out in our detector lab and during test beam at Fermi National Laboratory (Fermilab).
