A Hamiltonian for quantum copying

We derive an explicit Hamiltonian for copying the basis up and down states of a quantum two-state system - a qubit - onto n "copy" qubits initially all prepared in the down state. In terms of spin components, for spin-1/2 particle spin states, the resulting Hamiltonian involves n- and (n+1)-spin interactions. The case n=1 also corresponds to a quantum-computing controlled-NOT gate.

Extended Quantum XOR Gate in Terms of Two-Spin Interactions

Considerations of feasibility of quantum computing lead to the study of multispin quantum gates in which the input and output two-state systems (spins) are not identical. We provide a general discussion of this approach and then propose an explicit two-spin interaction Hamiltonian which accomplishes the quantum XOR gate function for a system of three spins: two input and one output.

Exact Solutions of Low-Dimensional Reaction-Diffusion Systems

We briefly review some common diffusion-limited reactions with emphasis on results for two-species reactions with anisotropic hopping. Our review also covers single-species reactions. The scope is that of providing reference and general discussion rather than details of methods and results. Recent exact results for a two-species model with anisotropic hopping and with `sticky' interaction of like particles, obtained by a novel method which allows exact solution of certain single-species and two-species reactions, are discussed.

Exact Solution of an Irreversible One-Dimensional Model with Fully Biased Spin Exchanges

We introduce a model with conserved dynamics, where nearest neighbor pairs of spins $\uparrow \downarrow (\downarrow \uparrow)$ can exchange to assume the configuration $\downarrow \uparrow (\uparrow \downarrow)$, with rate $β(α)$, through energy decreasing moves only. We report exact solution for the case when one of the rates, $α$ or $β$, is zero. The irreversibility of such dynamics results in strong dependence on the initial conditions. Domain wall arguments suggest that for more general models with steady states the dynamical critical exponent for the anisotropic spin exchange is different from the isotropic value.

Two-Species Annihilation with Drift: A Model with Continuous Concentration-Decay Exponents

We propose a model for diffusion-limited annihilation of two species, $A+B\to A$ or $B$, where the motion of the particles is subject to a drift. For equal initial concentrations of the two species, the density follows a power-law decay for large times. However, the decay exponent varies continuously as a function of the probability of which particle, the hopping one or the target, survives in the reaction. These results suggest that diffusion-limited reactions subject to drift do not fall into a limited number of universality classes.

Exact Solutions of Anisotropic Diffusion-Limited Reactions with Coagulation and Annihilation

We report exact results for one-dimensional reaction-diffusion models A+A -> inert, A+A -> A, and A+B -> inert, where in the latter case like particles coagulate on encounters and move as clusters. Our study emphasized anisotropy of hopping rates; no changes in universal properties were found, due to anisotropy, in all three reactions. The method of solution employed mapping onto a model of coagulating positive integer charges. The dynamical rules were synchronous, cellular-automaton type. All the asymptotic large-time results for particle densities were consistent, in the framework of universality, with other model results with different dynamical rules, when available in the literature.

Anisotropic Diffusion-Limited Reactions with Coagulation and Annihilation

One-dimensional reaction-diffusion models A+A -> 0, A+A -> A, and $A+B -> 0, where in the latter case like particles coagulate on encounters and move as clusters, are solved exactly with anisotropic hopping rates and assuming synchronous dynamics. Asymptotic large-time results for particle densities are derived and discussed in the framework of universality.

Dynamics of Nonequilibrium Deposition with Diffusional Relaxation

Models of adhesion of extended particles on linear and planar substrates are of interest in interpreting surface deposition in colloid, polymer, and certain biological systems. An introduction is presented to recent theoretical advances in modeling these processes. Effects of diffusional relaxation are surveyed in detail, including results obtained by analytical, large-scale numerical, mean-field and scaling approaches.

Multiparticle Reactions with Spatial Anisotropy

We study the effect of anisotropic diffusion on the one-dimensional annihilation reaction kA->inert with partial reaction probabilities when hard-core particles meet in groups of k nearest neighbors. Based on scaling arguments, mean field approaches and random walk considerations we argue that the spatial anisotropy introduces no appreciable changes as compared to the isotropic case. Our conjectures are supported by numerical simulations for slow reaction rates, for k=2 and 4.

Kinetic Roughening in Deposition with Suppressed Screening

Models of irreversible surface deposition of k-mers on a linear lattice, with screening suppressed by disallowing overhangs blocking large gaps, are studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the temporal and size dependence of the growing interface width. Despite earlier finding that for such models the deposit density tends to increase away from the substrate, our numerical results place them clearly within the standard KPZ universality class.

Exact Results for 1D Conserved Order Parameter Model

Recent exact results for a particle-exchange model on a linear lattice, with only irreversible moves reducing the local energy allowed, are reviewed. This model describes a zero-temperature Kawasaki-type phase separation process which reaches a frozen, initial-condition-dependent state at large times.

Dynamics of Nonequilibrium Processes: Surface Adsorption, Reaction-Diffusion Kinetics, Ordering and Phase Separation, a short review contributed to the book "Trends in Statistical Physics,"

This short review covers a wide selection of topics from a multidisciplinary area of dynamics of nonequilibrium systems in physics, chemistry, biology. Theoretical models of colloid particle and protein deposition and adhesion at surfaces, accompanied by relaxation processes, of reaction kinetics with and without diffusion, of phase coarsening and nucleation, will be surveyed. The unifying feature of these systems is the importance of fluctuations and many-body, multiparticle collective effects, in determining the dynamical behavior which is typically nonclassical.

Exact Results for Diffusion-Limited Reactions with Synchronous Dynamics

A new method is introduced allowing to solve exactly the reactions A+A->inert and A+A->A on the 1D lattice with synchronous diffusional dynamics (simultaneous hopping of all particles). Exact connections are found relating densities and certain correlation properties of these two reactions at all times. Asymptotic behavior at large times as well as scaling form describing the regime of low initial density, are derived explicitly.

Locally Frozen Defects in Random Sequential Adsorption with Diffusional Relaxation

Random sequential adsorption with diffusional relaxation, of two by two square objects on the two-dimensional square lattice is studied by Monte Carlo computer simulation. Asymptotically for large lattice sizes, diffusional relaxation allows the deposition process to reach full coverage. The coverage approaches the full occupation value, 1, as a power-law with convergence exponent near 1/2. For a periodic lattice of finite (even) size $L$, the final state is a frozen random rectangular grid of domain walls connecting single-site defects. The domain sizes saturate at L**0.8. Prior to saturation, i.e., asymptotically for infinite lattice, the domain growth is power-law with growth exponent near, or possibly somewhat smaller than, 1/2.

Annihilation of Immobile Reactants on the Bethe Lattice

Two-particle annihilation reaction, A+A -> inert, for immobile reactants on the Bethe lattice is solved exactly for the initially random distribution. The process reaches an absorbing state in which no nearest-neighbor reactants are left. The approach of the concentration to the limiting value is exponential. The solution reproduces the known one-dimensional result which is further extended to the reaction A+B -> inert.

Dissociative Adsorption: A Solvable Model

A model of "hot"-dimer deposition in one dimension, introduced by Pereyra and Albano, is modified to have an unbounded dissociation range. The resulting dynamical equations are solved exactly. A related k-mer dissociation model is also introduced and its solution obtained as a quadrature.

Exact Solution of a Phase Separation Model with Conserved Order Parameter Dynamics

Pairwise particle-exchange model on a linear lattice is solved exactly by a new rate-equation method. Lattice sites are occupied by particles A and B which can exchange irreversibly provided the local energy in reduced. Thus, the model corresponds to a zero-temperature Kawasaki-type phase separation process. Due to local order-parameter conservation, the dynamics reaches a frozen state at large times, the structure of which depends on the initial conditions.
