Identifiability of Low Frequency Li-ion Battery Parameters in Time Domain

This paper investigates the identification of observable low-frequency (LF) parameters of battery cell's equivalent circuit models (ECMs) using time-domain voltage and current measurements sampled at low frequency by built-in battery management systems (BMS) during operation. Accurate estimation of such parameters is challenging due to measurement resolution available in practical settings. To address this, a modeling and identification framework is proposed in which fractional constant phase element (CPE), commonly used to model LF diffusion phenomena of battery cells, is approximated in the time domain using a high-order RC network with a recursive definition. The parameter estimation problem is formulated as a constrained, non-convex least-squares problem in a discretized state-space representation. To improve robustness, parameter initialization strategies, bounds, and a procedure for selecting the number of RC branches are rigorously derived. The method is evaluated in a numerical study based on a power system application where the battery under the study provides primary frequency control to the grid. Under noise levels representative of typical BMS measurements, the proposed approach achieves, from time-domain measurements, accurate LF parameter estimation (including the CPE), with average errors below 1 %.

Optimizing Experiments for Accurate Battery Circuit Parameters Estimation: Reduction and Adjustment of Frequency Set Used in Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

In this paper, we study a suitable experimental design of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to reduce the number of frequency points while not significantly affecting the uncertainties of the estimated cell's equivalent circuit model (ECM) parameters. It is based on an E-optimal experimental design that aims to maximize the information about the ECM parameters collected by EIS measurements and, at the same time, minimize the overall uncertainty. In a numerical experiment, we first analyze to which extent reducing the number of measurement points at low frequencies affects the uncertainty of the estimated parameters. Secondly, we show that applying the frequency adjustments can lead to the same or even improved global uncertainty of ECM parameter estimates as with a higher number of measurements. This is numerically verified through a case study using the ECM parameters of a commercial battery cell.

On the Use of Cramer-Rao Lower Bound for Least-Variance Circuit Parameters Identification of Li-ion Cells

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Equivalent Circuit Models (ECMs) are widely used to characterize the impedance and estimate parameters of electrochemical systems such as batteries. We use a generic ECM with ten parameters grouped to model different frequency regions of the Li-ion cell's impedance spectrum. We derive a noise covariance matrix from the measurement model and use it to assign weights for the fitting technique. The paper presents two formulations of the parameters identification problem. Using the properties of the ECM EIS spectra, we propose a method to initialize ECM parameters for the Complex Non-linear Least Squares (CNLS) technique. The paper proposes a novel algorithm for designing the EIS experiments by applying the theory on Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) and Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) to the identification problem. We show that contributions to the FIM elements strongly depend on the frequencies at which EIS is performed. Hence, the algorithm aims to adjust frequencies such that the most information about parameters is collected. This is done by minimizing the highest variance of ECM parameters defined by CRLB. Results of a numerical experiment show that the estimator is efficient, and frequency adjustment leads to more accurate ECM parameters' identification.
