On epimorphisms in some categories of infinite-dimensional Lie groups

Let $X$ be a smooth compact connected manifold. Let $G=\mbox{Diff}\, X$ be the group of diffeomorphisms of $X$, equipped with the $C^\infty$-topology, and let $H$ be the stabilizer of some point in $X$. Then the inclusion $H\to G$, which is a morphism of two regular Fréchet--Lie groups, is an epimorphism in the category of smooth Lie groups modelled on complete locally convex spaces. At the same time, in the latter category, epimorphisms between finite dimensional Lie groups have dense range. We also prove that if $G$ is a Banach--Lie group and $H$ is a proper closed subgroup, the inclusion $H\to G$ is not an epimorphism in the category of Hausdorff groups.

Projectively universal countable metrizable groups

We prove that there exists a countable metrizable topological group $G$ such that every countable metrizable group is isomorphic to a quotient of $G$. The completion $H$ of $G$ is a Polish group such that every Polish group is isomorphic to a quotient of $H$.

On metrizable enveloping semigroups

When a topological group $G$ acts on a compact space $X$, its enveloping semigroup $E(X)$ is the closure of the set of $g$-translations, $g\in G$, in the compact space $X^X$. Assume that $X$ is metrizable. It has recently been shown by the first two authors that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $X$ is hereditarily almost equicontinuous; (2) $X$ is hereditarily non-sensitive; (3) for any compatible metric $d$ on $X$ the metric $d_G(x,y):=\sup\{d(gx,gy): g\in G\}$ defines a separable topology on $X$; (4) the dynamical system $(G,X)$ admits a proper representation on an Asplund Banach space. We prove that these conditions are also equivalent to the following: the enveloping semigroup $E(X)$ is metrizable.

Representations of residually finite groups by isometries of the Urysohn space

As a consequence of Kirchberg's work, Connes' Embedding Conjecture is equivalent to the property that every homomorphism of the group $F_\infty\times F_\infty$ into the unitary group $U(\ell^2)$ with the strong topology is pointwise approximated by homomorphisms with a precompact range. In this form, the property (which we call Kirchberg's property) makes sense for an arbitrary topological group. We establish the validity of the Kirchberg property for the isometry group $Iso(U)$ of the universal Urysohn metric space $U$ as a consequence of a stronger result: every representation of a residually finite group by isometries of $U$ can be pointwise approximated by representations with a finite range. This brings up the natural question of which other concrete infinite-dimensional groups satisfy the Kirchberg property.

A note on the precompactness of weakly almost periodic groups

An action of a group $G$ on a compact space $X$ is called weakly almost periodic if the orbit of every continuous function on $X$ is weakly relatively compact in $C(X)$. We observe that for a topological group $G$ the following are equivalent: (i) every continuous action of $G$ on a compact space is weakly almost periodic; (ii) $G$ is precompact. For monothetic groups the result was previously obtained by Akin and Glasner, while for locally compact groups it has been known for a long time.
