Coherent and chaotic properties of nuclear pairing

The properties of the pairing interaction in the shell model framework are considered with the aid of the exact numerical solution utilizing the quasispin symmetry. We emphasize the features which are out of reach for the usual approximate techniques based on the BCS approach supplemented by the random phase approximation treatment of pair vibrations, especially in the region of weak pairing where the BCS+RPA theory fails. For the first time chaotic aspects of the mixing generated by the pairing interaction are studied. The level repulsion and large information entropy of the eigenstates coexist with the absence of thermalization of single-particle motion. The full spectrum of pair vibration in average displays the spin dependence similar to that for a rigid rotor.

Exact solution of the nuclear pairing problem

In many applications to finite Fermi-systems, the pairing problem has to be treated exactly. We suggest a numerical method of exact solution based on SU(2) quasispin algebras and demonstrate its simplicity and practicality. We show that the treatment of binding energies with the use of the exact pairing and uncorrelated monopole contribution of other residual interactions can serve as an effective alternative to the full shell-model diagonalization in spherical nuclei. A self-consistent combination of the exactly treated pairing and Hartree-Fock method is discussed. Results for Sn isotopes indicate a good agreement with experimental data.

Particle removal reactions with deformed projectiles

Single-particle removal reactions are becoming an important tool for studying radioactive nuclei. The nuclei far from stability may reveal new regions of large deformation. We discuss the influence of the projectile deformation on the stripping cross sections and longitudinal momentum distributions of the core. The Glauber formalism for describing such reactions is developed and compared with the simpler geometric approach and with existing experimental data. The most significant effects are expected for nuclei with valence spherical orbitals strongly mixed by deformation. The shape of the momentum distribution, in turn, can be used for determining the degree of deformation of the projectile.

Multiple pion production from an oriented chiral condensate

We consider an ``oriented'' chiral condensate produced in the squeezed states of the effective field theory with time- and space-dependent pion mass parameter. We discuss the general properties of the solution, identifying condensate modes and determining the resulting pion distributions. The implementation of the dynamics in the form of sudden perturbation allows us to look for exact solutions. In the region of condensation, the dramatic increase in pion production and charge fluctuations are demonstrated.

Modeling Pionic Fusion

Recently observed rare heavy ion fusion processes, where the entire available energy is carried away by a single pion, is an example of extreme collectivity in nuclear reactions. We calculate the cross section in the approximation of sudden overlap, modeling the initial and final nuclei by moving harmonic oscillator potentials. This allows for a fully quantum-mechanical treatment, exact conservation of linear and angular momenta and fulfillment of the Pauli principle. The results are in satisfactory agreement with data. Mass number dependence and general trends of the process are discussed.

Chaotic wave functions and exponential convergence of low-lying energy eigenvalues

We suggest that low-lying eigenvalues of realistic quantum many-body hamiltonians, given, as in the nuclear shell model, by large matrices, can be calculated, instead of the full diagonalization, by the diagonalization of small truncated matrices with the exponential extrapolation of the results. We show numerical data confirming this conjecture. We argue that the exponential convergence in an appropriate basis may be a generic feature of complicated ("chaotic") systems where the wave functions are localized in this basis.

Invariant Correlation Entropy and Complexity of Quantum States

We define correlational (von Neumann) entropy for an individual quantum state of a system whose time-independent hamiltonian contains random parameters and is treated as a member of a statistical ensemble. This entropy is representation independent and can be calculated as a trace functional of the density matrix which describes the system in its interaction with the noise source. We analyze perturbation theory in order to show the evolution from the pure state to the mixed one. Exactly solvable examples illustrate the use of correlational entropy as a measure of the degree of complexity in comparison with other available suggestions such as basis-dependent information entropy. It is shown in particular that a harmonic oscillator in a uniform field of random strength comes to a quasithermal equilibrium; we discuss the relation between effective temperature and canonical equilibrium temperature. The notion of correlational entropy is applied to a realistic numerical caculation in the framework of the nuclear shell model. In this system, which reveals generic signatures of quantum chaos, correlational entropy and information entropy calculated in the mean field basis display similar qualitative behavior.

Chaos {\sl vs} Thermalization in the Nuclear Shell Model

Generic signatures of quantum chaos found in realistic shell model calculations are compared with thermal statistical equilibrium. We show the similarity of the informational entropy of individual eigenfunctions in the mean field basis to the thermodynamical entropy found from the level density. Mean occupation numbers of single-particle orbitals agree with the Fermi-Dirac distribution despite the strong nucleon interaction.

Truncation Method for the Shell Model Calculation

A method of truncating the large shell model basis is outlined. It relies on the order given by the unperturbed energies of the basis states and on the constancy of their spreading widths. Both quantities can be calculated by a simple averaging procedure. The method is tested in the sd shell where the JT dimensions are of the order of a few thousand. It proves to be very effective in the middle of the fp shell where JT dimensions of the order of a few million are truncated to a few thousand.

Chaos and Order in the Shell Model Eigenvectors

The energies and wave functions of stationary many-body states are analyzed to look for the signatures of quantum chaos. Shell model calculations with the Wildenthal interaction are performed in the $J-T$ scheme for 12 particles in the $sd$-shell. The local level statistics are in perfect agreement with the GOE predictions. The analysis of the amplitudes of the eigenvectors in the shell model basis with the aid of the informational entropy and moments of the distribution function shows evidence for local chaos with a localization length reaching 90\% of the total dimension in the middle of the spectrum. The degree of chaoticity is sensitive to the the strength of the residual interaction as compared to the single particle energy spacing.

Coexistence of Regular Undamped Nuclear Dynamics with Intrinsic Chaoticity

We study the conditions under which the nucleons inside a deformed nucleus can undergo chaotic motion. To do this we perform self-consistent calculations in semiclassical approximation utilizing a multipole-multipole interaction of the Bohr-Mottelson type for quadrupole and octupole deformations. For the case of harmonic and non-harmonic static potentials, we find that both multipole deformations lead to regular motion of the collective coordinate, the multipole moment of deformation. However, despite this regular collective motion, we observe chaotic single particle dynamics.
