The electromagnetic field in Poisson gauge theory: the groupoidal approach

We consider the problem of defining the field strength of abelian potentials when the spacetime is a Poisson manifold, within the groupoidal approach. The natural definition in terms of gauge invariant momenta is proved to be equivalent to covariant and invariant tensors of a local symplectic groupoid representing a symplectic realization of the Poisson manifold. A Poisson Chern-Simons model is then proposed and its equations of motion are shortly discussed.

Symplectic Groupoids and Poisson Electrodynamics

We develop a geometric approach to Poisson electrodynamics, that is, the semi-classical limit of noncommutative $U(1)$ gauge theory. Our framework is based on an integrating symplectic groupoid for the underlying Poisson brackets, which we interpret as the classical phase space of a point particle on noncommutative spacetime. In this picture gauge fields arise as bisections of the symplectic groupoid while gauge transformations are parameterized by Lagrangian bisections. We provide a geometric construction of a gauge invariant action functional which minimally couples a dynamical charged particle to a background electromagnetic field. Our constructions are elucidated by several explicit examples, demonstrating the appearances of curved and even compact momentum spaces, the interplay between gauge transformations and spacetime diffeomorphisms, as well as emergent gravity phenomena.

Symplectic embeddings, homotopy algebras and almost Poisson gauge symmetry

We formulate general definitions of semi-classical gauge transformations for noncommutative gauge theories in general backgrounds of string theory, and give novel explicit constructions using techniques based on symplectic embeddings of almost Poisson structures. In the absence of fluxes the gauge symmetries close a Poisson gauge algebra and their action is governed by a $P_\infty$-algebra which we construct explicitly from the symplectic embedding. In curved backgrounds they close a field dependent gauge algebra governed by an $L_\infty$-algebra which is not a $P_\infty$-algebra. Our technique produces new all orders constructions which are significantly simpler compared to previous approaches, and we illustrate its applicability in several examples of interest in noncommutative field theory and gravity. We further show that our symplectic embeddings naturally define a $P_\infty$-structure on the exterior algebra of differential forms on a generic almost Poisson manifold, which generalizes earlier constructions of differential graded Poisson algebras, and suggests a new approach to defining noncommutative gauge theories beyond the gauge sector and the semi-classical limit based on $A_\infty$-algebras.

Poisson gauge theory

The Poisson gauge algebra is a semi-classical limit of complete non-commutative gauge algebra. In the present work we formulate the Poisson gauge theory which is a dynamical field theoretical model having the Poisson gauge algebra as a corresponding algebra of gauge symmetries. The proposed model is designed to investigate the semi-classical features of the full non-commutative gauge theory with coordinate dependent non-commutativity $Θ^{ab}(x)$, especially whose with a non-constant rank. We derive the expression for the covariant derivative of matter field. The commutator relation for the covariant derivatives defines the Poisson field strength which is covariant under the Poisson gauge transformations and reproduces the standard $U(1)$ field strength in the commutative limit. We derive the corresponding Bianchi identities. The field equations for the gauge and the matter fields are obtained from the gauge invariant action. We consider different examples of linear in coordinates Poisson structures $Θ^{ab}(x)$, as well as non-linear ones, and obtain explicit expressions for all proposed constructions. Our model is unique up to invertible field redefinitions and coordinate transformations.

A novel approach to non-commutative gauge theory

We propose a field theoretical model defined on non-commutative space-time with non-constant non-commutativity parameter $Θ(x)$, which satisfies two main requirements: it is gauge invariant and reproduces in the commutative limit, $Θ\to 0$, the standard $U(1)$ gauge theory. We work in the slowly varying field approximation where higher derivatives terms in the star commutator are neglected and the latter is approximated by the Poisson bracket, $-i[f,g]_\star\approx\{f,g\}$. We derive an explicit expression for both the NC deformation of Abelian gauge transformations which close the algebra $[δ_f,δ_g]A=δ_{\{f,g\}}A$, and the NC field strength ${\cal F}$, covariant under these transformations, $δ_f {\cal F}=\{{\cal F},f\}$. NC Chern-Simons equations are equivalent to the requirement that the NC field strength, ${\cal F}$, should vanish identically. Such equations are non-Lagrangian. The NC deformation of Yang-Mills theory is obtained from the gauge invariant action, $S=\int {\cal F}^2$. As guiding example, the case of $su(2)$-like non-commutativity, corresponding to rotationally invariant NC space, is worked out in detail.

Non-commutative deformation of Chern-Simons theory

The problem of the consistent definition of gauge theories living on the non-commutative (NC) spaces with a non-constant NC parameter $Θ(x)$ is discussed. Working in the L$_\infty$ formalism we specify the undeformed theory, $3$d abelian Chern-Simons, by setting the initial $\ell_1$ brackets. The deformation is introduced by assigning the star commutator to the $\ell_2$ bracket. For this initial set up we construct the corresponding L$_\infty$ structure which defines both the NC deformation of the abelian gauge transformations and the field equations covariant under these transformations. To compensate the violation of the Leibniz rule one needs the higher brackets which are proportional to the derivatives of $Θ$. Proceeding in the slowly varying field approximation when the star commutator is approximated by the Poisson bracket we derive the recurrence relations for the definition of these brackets for arbitrary $Θ$. For the particular case of $su(2)$-like NC space we obtain an explicit all orders formulas for both NC gauge transformations and NC deformation of Chern-Simons equations. The latter are non-Lagrangian and are satisfied if the NC field strength vanishes everywhere.

$L_\infty$-Bootstrap Approach to Non-Commutative Gauge Theories

A consistent description of gauge theories on coordinate dependent non-commutative (NC) space-time is a long-standing problem with a number of solutions, none of which is free from criticism. In this work, we discuss the approach proposed in arXiv:1803.00732, based on the conjecture that any consistent gauge theory can be described in terms of the $L_\infty$-structure. Starting with a well-defined commutative gauge theory, we represent it, together with the non-commutative deformation, as a part of a bigger $L_\infty$-algebra by setting some initial brackets $\ell_1$, $\ell_2$, etc. Then, solving the $L_\infty$-relations we determine the missing brackets $\ell_n$ and close the $L_\infty$-algebra defining the NC gauge theory which reproduces in the commutative limit the original one. We provide the recurrence relations for the construction of the pure gauge algebra $L^{\rm gauge}_\infty$, using which we find an explicit form of the NC $\mathfrak{su}(2)$-like and non-associative octonionic-like deformations of the Abelian gauge transformations. The construction of the $L^{\rm full}_\infty$-algebra describing the dynamics is discussed using the example of the NC Chern-Simons theory. The obtained equations of motion are non-Lagrangian, which indicates the difference between our approach and the previous ones.

Symplectic realisation of electric charge in fields of monopole distributions

We construct a symplectic realisation of the twisted Poisson structure on the phase space of an electric charge in the background of an arbitrary smooth magnetic monopole density in three dimensions. We use the extended phase space variables to study the classical and quantum dynamics of charged particles in arbitrary magnetic fields by constructing a suitable Hamiltonian that reproduces the Lorentz force law for the physical degrees of freedom. In the source-free case the auxiliary variables can be eliminated via Hamiltonian reduction, while for non-zero monopole densities they are necessary for a consistent formulation and are related to the extra degrees of freedom usually required in the Hamiltonian description of dissipative systems. We obtain new perspectives on the dynamics of dyons and motion in the field of a Dirac monopole, which can be formulated without Dirac strings. We compare our associative phase space formalism with the approach based on nonassociative quantum mechanics, reproducing extended versions of the characteristic translation group three-cocycles and minimal momentum space volumes, and prove that the two approaches are formally equivalent. We also comment on the implications of our symplectic realisation in the dual framework of non-geometric string theory and double field theory.

Recurrence relations for symplectic realization of (quasi)-Poisson structures

It is known that any Poisson manifold can be embedded into a bigger space which admites a description in terms of the canonical Poisson structure, i.e., Darboux coordinates. Such a procedure is known as a symplectic realization and has a number of important applications like quantization of the original Poisson manifold. In the present paper we extend the above idea to the case of quasi-Poisson structures which should not necessarily satisfy the Jacobi identity. For any given quasi-Poisson structure $Θ$ we provide a recursive procedure of the construction of a symplectic manifold, as well as the corresponding expression in the Darboux coordinates, which we look in form of the generalized Bopp shift. Our construction is illustrated on the exemples of the constant $R$-flux algebra, quasi-Poisson structure isomorphic to the commutator algebra of imaginary octonions and the non-geometric M-theory $R$-flux backgrounds. In all cases we derive explicit formulae for the symplectic realization and the generalized Bopp shift. We also discuss possible applications of the obtained mathematical structures.

Non-associative star products and quantization of non-geometric backgrounds in string and M-theory

We review two known in the literature exemples of non-associative star products. The first one is the phase space star product representing quantization of non-geometric $R$-flux background in closed string theory. The second is the octonionic star product which provides the quantization of the quasi-Poisson algebra isomorphic to the Malcev algebra of imaginary octonions. We discuss in details the construction, properties and physical applications of these star products. In particular, we consider the quantization of non-geometric M-theory background. Based on these two exemples we formulate the minimal set of physically motivated conditions for the definition of non-associative deformation quantization.

$G_2$-structures and quantization of non-geometric M-theory backgrounds

We describe the quantization of a four-dimensional locally non-geometric M-theory background dual to a twisted three-torus by deriving a phase space star product for deformation quantization of quasi-Poisson brackets related to the nonassociative algebra of octonions. The construction is based on a choice of $G_2$-structure which defines a nonassociative deformation of the addition law on the seven-dimensional vector space of Fourier momenta. We demonstrate explicitly that this star product reduces to that of the three-dimensional parabolic constant $R$-flux model in the contraction of M-theory to string theory, and use it to derive quantum phase space uncertainty relations as well as triproducts for the nonassociative geometry of the four-dimensional configuration space. By extending the $G_2$-structure to a $Spin(7)$-structure, we propose a 3-algebra structure on the full eight-dimensional M2-brane phase space which reduces to the quasi-Poisson algebra after imposing a particular gauge constraint, and whose deformation quantisation simultaneously encompasses both the phase space star products and the configuration space triproducts. We demonstrate how these structures naturally fit in with previous occurences of 3-algebras in M-theory.
