Chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz for phantom eigenstates in the open XXZ spin-$\frac12$ chain

We construct the coordinate Bethe ansatz for all eigenstates of the open spin-$\frac12$ XXZ chain that fulfill the phantom roots criterion (PRC). Under the PRC, the Hilbert space splits into two invariant subspaces and there are two sets of homogeneous Bethe ansatz equations (BAE) to characterize the subspaces in each case. We propose two sets of vectors with chiral shocks to span the invariant subspaces and expand the corresponding eigenstates. All the vectors are factorized and have symmetrical and simple structures. Using several simple cases as examples, we present the core elements of our generalized coordinate Bethe ansatz method. The eigenstates are expanded in our generating set and show clear chirality and certain symmetry properties. The bulk scattering matrices, the reflection matrices on the two boundaries and the BAE are obtained, which demonstrates the agreement with other approaches. Some hypotheses are formulated for the generalization of our approach.

Full spectrum of the Liouvillian of open dissipative quantum systems in the Zeno limit

We consider an open quantum system with dissipation, described by a Lindblad Master equation (LME). For dissipation locally acting and sufficiently strong, a separation of the relaxation time scales occurs, which, in terms of the eigenvalues of the Liouvillian, implies a grouping of the latter in distinct vertical stripes in the complex plane at positions determined by the eigenvalues of the dissipator. We derive effective LME equations describing the modes within each stripe separately, and solve them perturbatively, obtaining for the full set of eigenvalues and eigenstates of the Liouvillian explicit expressions correct at order $1/Γ$ included, where $Γ$ is the strength of the dissipation. As a example, we apply our general results to quantum $XYZ$ spin chains coupled, at one boundary, to a dissipative bath of polarization.

Phantom Bethe roots in the integrable open spin $1/2$ $XXZ$ chain

We investigate special solutions to the Bethe Ansatz equations (BAE) for open integrable $XXZ$ Heisenberg spin chains containing phantom (infinite) Bethe roots. The phantom Bethe roots do not contribute to the energy of the Bethe state, so the energy is determined exclusively by the remaining regular excitations. We rederive the phantom Bethe roots criterion and focus on BAE solutions for mixtures of phantom roots and regular (finite) Bethe roots. We prove that in the presence of phantom Bethe roots, all eigenstates are split between two invariant subspaces, spanned by chiral shock states. Bethe eigenstates are described by two complementary sets of Bethe Ansatz equations for regular roots, one for each invariant subspace. The respective "semi-phantom" Bethe vectors are states of chiral nature, with chirality properties getting less pronounced when more regular Bethe roots are added. For the easy plane case "semi-phantom" Bethe states carry nonzero magnetic current, and are characterized by quasi-periodic modulation of the magnetization profile, the most prominent example being the spin helix states (SHS). We illustrate our results investigating "semi-phantom" Bethe states generated by one regular Bethe root (the other Bethe roots being phantom), with simple structure of the invariant subspace, in all details. We obtain the explicit expressions for Bethe vectors, and calculate the simplest correlation functions, including the spin-current for all the states in the single particle multiplet.

Dissipative generation of pure steady states and a gambler's ruin problem

We consider an open quantum system, with dissipation applied only to a part of its degrees of freedom, evolving via a quantum Markov dynamics. We demonstrate that, in the Zeno regime of large dissipation, the relaxation of the quantum system towards a pure quantum state is linked to the evolution of a classical Markov process towards a single absorbing state. The rates of the associated classical Markov process are determined by the original quantum dynamics. Extension of this correspondence to absorbing states with internal structure allows us to establish a general criterion for having a Zeno-limit nonequilibrium stationary state of arbitrary finite rank. An application of this criterion is illustrated in the case of an open XXZ spin-1/2 chain dissipatively coupled at its edges to baths with fixed and different polarizations. For this system, we find exact nonequilibrium steady-state solutions of ranks 1 and 2.

Inhomogeneous MPA and exact steady states of boundary driven spin chains at large dissipation

We find novel site-dependent Lax operators in terms of which we demonstrate exact solvability of a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, with jump operators polarizing the boundary spins in arbitrary directions. We write the corresponding nonequilibrium steady state using an inhomogeneous MPA, where the constituent matrices satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence relations. Although these matrices can be embedded into an infinite-dimensional auxiliary space, we have verified that they cannot be simultaneously put into a tridiagonal form, not even in the case of axially symmetric (XXZ) bulk interactions and general nonlongitudinal boundary dissipation. We expect our results to have further fundamental applications for the construction of nonlocal integrals of motion for the open XYZ model with arbitrary boundary fields, or the eight-vertex model.

Exact nonequilibrium steady state of open XXZ/XYZ spin-1/2 chain with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We investigate a dissipatively driven XYZ spin-1/2 chain in the Zeno limit of strong dissipation, described by Lindblad master equation. The nonequilibrium steady state is expressed in terms of a matrix product ansatz using novel site-dependent Lax operators. The components of Lax operators satisfy a simple set of linear recurrence equations that generalize the defining algebraic relations of the quantum group $U_q(sl_2)$. We reveal connection between the nonequilibrium steady state of the nonunitary dynamics and the respective integrable model with edge magnetic fields, described by coherent unitary dynamics.

Transition between dissipatively stabilized helical states

We analyze a $XXZ$ spin-1/2 chain which is driven dissipatively at its boundaries. The dissipative driving is modelled by Lindblad jump operators which only act on both boundary spins. In the limit of large dissipation, we find that the boundary spins are pinned to a certain value and at special values of the interaction anisotropy, the steady states are formed by a rank-2 mixture of helical states with opposite winding numbers. Contrarily to previous stabilization of topological states, these helical states are not protected by a gap in the spectrum of the Lindbladian. By changing the anisotropy, the transition between these steady states takes place via mixed states of higher rank. In particular, crossing the value of zero anisotropy a totally mixed state is found as the steady state. The transition between the different winding numbers via mixed states can be seen in the light of the transitions between different topological states in dissipatively driven systems. The results are obtained developing a perturbation theory in the inverse dissipative coupling strength and using the numerical exact diagonalization and matrix product state methods.

Exact results for the entanglement in 1D Hubbard models with spatial constraints

We investigate the entanglement in Hubbard models of hardcore bosons in $1D$, with an additional hardcore interaction on nearest neighbouring sites. We derive analytical formulas for the bipartite entanglement entropy for any number of particles and system size, whose ratio determines the system filling. At the thermodynamic limit the entropy diverges logarithmically for all fillings, except for half-filling, with the universal prefactor $1/2$ due to partial permutational invariance. We show how maximal entanglement can be achieved by controlling the interaction range between the particles and the filling which determines the empty space in the system. Our results show how entangled quantum phases can be created and controlled, by imposing spatial constraints on states formed in many-body systems of strongly interacting particles.

Switching pure states of the dissipative Heisenberg XXZ chain by local magnetic fields

The effects of a local magnetic field on nonequilibrium stationary states (NESS) of the open quantum $XXZ$ spin chain are investigated with a Lindblad master equation approach in the limit of strong dissipation. The local magnetic field is applied to a single bulk spin of the chain while the ends are kept at fixed polarizations by dissipation. We show that suitable changes of the local magnetic field permit to invert the spin current by switching pure NESS with opposite chiralities, while preserving the state purity and achieving optimal transport.

Two-species hardcore reversible cellular automaton: matrix ansatz for dynamics and nonequilibrium stationary state

In this paper we study the statistical properties of a reversible cellular automaton in two out-of-equilibrium settings. In the first part we consider two instances of the initial value problem, corresponding to the inhomogeneous quench and the local quench. Our main result is an exact matrix product expression of the time evolution of the probability distribution, which we use to determine the time evolution of the density profiles analytically. In the second part we study the model on a finite lattice coupled with stochastic boundaries. Once again we derive an exact matrix product expression of the stationary distribution, as well as the particle current and density profiles in the stationary state. The exact expressions reveal the existence of different phases with either ballistic or diffusive transport depending on the boundary parameters.

Effective quantum Zeno dynamics in dissipative quantum systems

We investigate the time evolution of an open quantum system described by a Lindblad master equation with dissipation acting only on a part of the degrees of freedom ${\cal H}_0$ of the system, and targeting a unique dark state in ${\cal H}_0$. We show that, in the Zeno limit of large dissipation, the density matrix of the system traced over the dissipative subspace ${\cal H}_0$, evolves according to another Lindblad dynamics, with renormalized effective Hamiltonian and weak effective dissipation. This behavior is explicitly checked in the case of Heisenberg spin chains with one or both boundary spins strongly coupled to a magnetic reservoir. Moreover, the populations of the eigenstates of the renormalized effective Hamiltonian evolve in time according to a classical Markov dynamics. As a direct application of this result, we propose a computationally-efficient exact method to evaluate the nonequilibrium steady state of a general system in the limit of strong dissipation.

Spin-helix states in the $XXZ$ spin chain with strong dissipation

We investigate the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) in an open quantum XXZ chain with strong $XY$ plane boundary polarization gradient. Using the general theory developed in [1], we show that in the critical $XXZ$ $|Δ|<1$ easy plane case, the steady current in large systems under strong driving shows resonance-like behaviour, by an infinitesimal change of the spin chain anisotropy or other parameters. Alternatively, by fine tuning the system parameters and varying the boundary dissipation strength, we observe a change of the NESS current from diffusive (of order $1/N$, for small dissipation strength) to ballistic regime (of order 1, for large dissipation strength). This drastic change results from an accompanying structural change of the NESS, which becomes a pure spin-helix state characterized by a winding number which is proportional to the system size. We calculate the critical dissipation strength needed to observe this surprising effect.

Targeting pure quantum states by strong noncommutative dissipation

We propose a solution to the problem of realizing a predefined and arbitrary pure quantum state, based on the simultaneous presence of coherent and dissipative dynamics, noncommuting on the target state and in the limit of strong dissipation. More precisely, we obtain a necessary and sufficient criterion whereby the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of an open quantum system described by a Lindblad master equation approaches a target pure state in the Zeno regime, i.e., for infinitely large dissipative coupling. We also provide an explicit formula for the characteristic dissipative strength beyond which the purity of the NESS becomes effective, thus paving the way to an experimental implementation of our criterion. For an illustration, we deal with targeting a Bell state, an arbitrary pure state of $N$ qubits, and a spin-helix state of $N$ qubits.

Solution of the Lindblad equation for spin helix states

Using Lindblad dynamics we study quantum spin systems with dissipative boundary dynamics that generate a stationary nonequilibrium state with a non-vanishing spin current that is locally conserved except at the boundaries. We demonstrate that with suitably chosen boundary target states one can solve the many-body Lindblad equation exactly in any dimension. As solution we obtain pure states at any finite value of the dissipation strength and any system size. They are characterized by a helical stationary magnetization profile and a superdiffusive ballistic current of order one, independent of system size even when the quantum spin system is not integrable. These results are derived in explicit form for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain and its higher-spin generalizations (which include for spin-1 the integrable Zamolodchikov-Fateev model and the bi-quadratic Heisenberg chain). The extension of the results to higher dimensions is straightforward.

Exact scaling solution of the mode coupling equations for non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics in one dimension

We obtain the exact solution of the one-loop mode-coupling equations for the dynamical structure function in the framework of non-linear fluctuating hydrodynamics in one space dimension for the strictly hyperbolic case where all characteristic velocities are different. All solutions are characterized by dynamical exponents which are Kepler ratios of consecutive Fibonacci numbers, which includes the golden mean as a limiting case. The scaling form of all higher Fibonacci modes are asymmetric Lévy-distributions. Thus a hierarchy of new dynamical universality classes is established. We also compute the precise numerical value of the Prähofer-Spohn scaling constant to which scaling functions obtained from mode coupling theory are sensitive.

Obtaining pure steady states in nonequilibrium quantum systems with strong dissipative couplings

Dissipative preparation of a pure steady state usually involves a commutative action of a coherent and a dissipative dynamics on the target state. Namely, the target pure state is an eigenstate of both the coherent and dissipative parts of the dynamics. We show that working in the Zeno regime, i.e. for infinitely large dissipative coupling, one can generate a pure state by a non commutative action, in the above sense, of the coherent and dissipative dynamics. A corresponding Zeno regime pureness criterion is derived. We illustrate the approach, looking at both its theoretical and applicative aspects, in the example case of an open $XXZ$ spin-$1/2$ chain, driven out of equilibrium by boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations. Using our criterion, we find two families of pure nonequilibrium steady states, in the Zeno regime, and calculate the dissipative strengths effectively needed to generate steady states which are almost indistinguishable from the target pure states.

When is a bottleneck a bottleneck?

Bottlenecks, i.e. local reductions of capacity, are one of the most relevant scenarios of traffic systems. The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with a defect is a minimal model for such a bottleneck scenario. One crucial question is "What is the critical strength of the defect that is required to create global effects, i.e. traffic jams localized at the defect position". Intuitively one would expect that already an arbitrarily small bottleneck strength leads to global effects in the system, e.g. a reduction of the maximal current. Therefore it came as a surprise when, based on computer simulations, it was claimed that the reaction of the system depends in non-continuous way on the defect strength and weak defects do not have a global influence on the system. Here we reconcile intuition and simulations by showing that indeed the critical defect strength is zero. We discuss the implications for the analysis of empirical and numerical data.

Fibonacci family of dynamical universality classes

Universality is a well-established central concept of equilibrium physics. However, in systems far away from equilibrium a deeper understanding of its underlying principles is still lacking. Up to now, a few classes have been identified. Besides the diffusive universality class with dynamical exponent $z=2$ another prominent example is the superdiffusive Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class with $z=3/2$. It appears e.g. in low-dimensional dynamical phenomena far from thermal equilibrium which exhibit some conservation law. Here we show that both classes are only part of an infinite discrete family of non-equilibrium universality classes. Remarkably their dynamical exponents $z_α$ are given by ratios of neighbouring Fibonacci numbers, starting with either $z_1=3/2$ (if a KPZ mode exist) or $z_1=2$ (if a diffusive mode is present). If neither a diffusive nor a KPZ mode are present, all dynamical modes have the Golden Mean $z=(1+\sqrt{5})/2$ as dynamical exponent. The universal scaling functions of these Fibonacci modes are asymmetric Lévy distributions which are completely fixed by the macroscopic current-density relation and compressibility matrix of the system and hence accessible to experimental measurement.
