Entangling power of permutation invariant quantum states

We investigate the von Neumann entanglement entropy as function of the size of a subsystem for permutation invariant ground states in models with finite number of states per site, e.g., in quantum spin models. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropy of $n$ sites in a system of length $L$ generically grows as $σ\log_{2}[2πen(L-n)/L]+C$, where $σ$ is the on-site spin and $C$ is a function depending only on magnetization.

Why spontaneous symmetry breaking disappears in a bridge system with PDE-friendly boundaries

We consider a driven diffusive system with two types of particles, A and B, coupled at the ends to reservoirs with fixed particle densities. To define stochastic dynamics that correspond to boundary reservoirs we introduce projection measures. The stationary state is shown to be approached dynamically through an infinite reflection of shocks from the boundaries. We argue that spontaneous symmetry breaking observed in similar systems is due to placing effective impurities at the boundaries and therefore does not occur in our system. Monte-Carlo simulations confirm our results.

Logarithmic divergence of the block entanglement entropy for the ferromagnetic Heisenberg model

Recent studies have shown that logarithmic divergence of entanglement entropy as function of size of a subsystem is a signature of criticality in quantum models. We demonstrate that the ground state entanglement entropy of $ n$ sites for ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain of the length $L$ in a sector with fixed magnetization $y$ per site grows as ${1/2}\log_{2} \frac{n(L-n)}{L}C(y)$, where $C(y)=2πe({1/4}-y^{2})$

Integrable Markov processes and quantum spin chains

A set of Markov processes corresponding to systems of hard-core particles interacting along the line are shown to be solvable via a dynamic matrix product ansatz (DMPA). We show that quantum spin Hamiltonians can be treated by the DMPA as well, and demonstrate how the DMPA, originally formulated for systems with open ends, works for periodic systems.

Shocks and excitation dynamics in a driven diffusive two-channel system

We consider classical hard-core particles hopping stochastically on two parallel chains in the same or opposite directions with an inter- and intra-chain interaction. We discuss general questions concerning elementary excitations in these systems, shocks and rarefaction waves. From microscopical considerations we derive the collective velocities and shock stability conditions. The findings are confirmed by comparison to Monte Carlo data of a multi-parameter class of simple two-lane driven diffusion models, which have the stationary state of a product form on a ring. Going to the hydrodynamic limit, we point out the analogy of our results to the ones known in the theory of differential equations of conservation laws. We discuss the singularity problem and find a dissipative term that selects the physical solution.

A Model of Sequence Dependent Protein Diffusion Along Dna

We introduce a probabilistic model for protein sliding motion along DNA during the search of a target sequence. The model accounts for possible effects due to sequence-dependent interaction between the nonspecific DNA and the protein. As an example, we focus on T7 RNA-polymerase and exploit the available information about its interaction at the promoter site in order to investigate the influence of bacteriophage T7 DNA sequence on the dynamics of the sliding process. Hydrogen bonds in the major groove are used as the main sequence-dependent interaction between RNA-polymerase and DNA. The resulting dynamical properties and the possibility of an experimental verification are discussed in details. We show that, while at large times the process reaches a pure diffusive regime, it initially displays a sub-diffusive behavior. The subdiffusive regime can lasts sufficiently long to be of biological interest.

Symmetry breaking and phase coexistence in a driven diffusive two-channel system

We consider classical hard-core particles moving on two parallel chains in the same direction. An interaction between the channels is included via the hopping rates. For a ring, the stationary state has a product form. For the case of coupling to two reservoirs, it is investigated analytically and numerically. In addition to the known one-channel phases, two new regions are found, in particular the one, where the total density is fixed, but the filling of the individual chains changes back and forth, with a preference for strongly different densities. The corresponding probability distribution is determined and shown to have an universal form. The phase diagram and general aspects of the problem are discussed.

Quantum shock waves in the Heisenberg XY model

We show the existence of quantum states of the Heisenberg XY chain which closely follow the motion of the corresponding semi-classical ones, and whose evolution resemble the propagation of a shock wave in a fluid. These states are exact solutions of the Schroedinger equation of the XY model and their classical counterpart are simply domain walls or soliton-like solutions.

Steady-state selection in driven diffusive systems with open boundaries

We investigate the stationary states of one-dimensional driven diffusive systems, coupled to boundary reservoirs with fixed particle densities. We argue that the generic phase diagram is governed by an extremal principle for the macroscopic current irrespective of the local dynamics. In particular, we predict a minimal current phase for systems with local minimum in the current--density relation. This phase is explained by a dynamical phenomenon, the branching and coalescence of shocks, Monte-Carlo simulations confirm the theoretical scenario.

Exactly solvable statistical model for two-way traffic

We generalize a recently introduced traffic model, where the statistical weights are associated with whole trajectories, to the case of two-way flow. An interaction between the two lanes is included which describes a slowing down when two cars meet. This leads to two coupled five-vertex models. It is shown that this problem can be solved by reducing it to two one-lane problems with modified parameters. In contrast to stochastic models, jamming appears only for very strong interaction between the lanes.
