A Constructive Lower Bound on Szemerédi's Theorem

Let $r_k(n)$ denote the maximum cardinality of a set $A \subset \{1,2, \dots, n \}$ such that $A$ does not contain a $k$-term arithmetic progression. In this paper, we give a method of constructing such a set and prove the lower bound $n^{1-\frac{c_k}{k \ln k}} < r_k(n)$ where $k$ is prime, and $c_k \rightarrow 1$ as $k \rightarrow \infty$. This bound is the best known for an increasingly large interval of $n$ as we choose larger and larger $k$. We also demonstrate that one can prove or disprove a conjecture of Erdős on arithmetic progressions in large sets once tight enough bounds on $r_k(n)$ are obtained.

Pancyclicity when each cycle contains k chords

For integers $n \geq k \geq 2$, let $c(n,k)$ be the minimum number of chords that must be added to a cycle of length $n$ so that the resulting graph has the property that for every $l \in \{ k , k + 1 , \dots , n \}$, there is a cycle of length $l$ that contains exactly $k$ of the added chords. Affif Chaouche, Rutherford, and Whitty introduced the function $c(n,k)$. They showed that for every integer $k \geq 2$, $c(n , k ) \geq Ω_k ( n^{1/k} )$ and they asked if $n^{1/k}$ gives the correct order of magnitude of $c(n, k)$ for $k \geq 2$. Our main theorem answers this question as we prove that for every integer $k \geq 2$, and for sufficiently large $n$, $c(n , k) \leq k \lceil n^{1/k} \rceil + k^2$. This upper bound, together with the lower bound of Affif Chaouche et.\ al., shows that the order of magnitude of $c(n,k)$ is $n^{1/k}$.

A New Lower Bound for van der Waerden Numbers

In this paper we prove a new recurrence relation on the van der Waerden numbers, $w(r,k)$. In particular, if $p$ is a prime and $p\leq k$ then $w(r, k) > p \cdot \left(w\left(r - \left\lceil \frac{r}{p}\right\rceil, k\right) -1\right)$. This recurrence gives the lower bound $w(r, p+1) > p^{r-1}2^p$ when $r \leq p$, which generalizes Berlekamp's theorem on 2-colorings, and gives the best known bound for a large interval of $r$. The recurrence can also be used to construct explicit valid colorings, and it improves known lower bounds on small van der Waerden numbers.
