Polynomial valuations on plane polygons

Scissors congruence problems involving translations have prompted the study of translation invariant simple valuations. We review this classical theory from a naive and consistent viewpoint: starting from a description of all simple valuations on polygons, we characterize the effect of translation invariance. A description of all polynomial simple valuations is obtained as a bi-product of the adopted approach and as a direct generalization of the translation invariant theory; it appears to be new.

Renormalization, equipotential annuli and the Hausdorff measure

For a complex single variable polynomial $f$ of degree $d$, let $K$ be its filled Julia set, i.e., the union of all bounded orbits. Assume that $K$ has an invariant component $K^*$ on which $f$ acts as a degree $d_*<d$ map. This is a simplest instance of holomorphic polynomial-like renormalization (Douady-Hubbard). One can associate a certain Cantor-like subset $G'$ of the circle with $K^*$; it is defined as the set of arguments of all smooth or broken rays to $K^*$. We will describe a role the Hausdorff dimension of $G'$ and the respective Hausdorff measure play in geometry of $K^*$. In particular, we give upper and lower bounds on the modulus of renormalization in terms of the Hausdorff measure of $K^*$.

Root laminations of arbitrary degree

This paper studies the space of degree $d>1$ invariant q-laminations, i.e., geodesic laminations invariant under the $d$-tupling map of the circle and associated with equivalence relations. Our main construction associates a q-lamination with any degree $d$ critical portrait \emph{in a canonical way}. Even though somewhat technical, this is the initial step in the program of classification of all degree $d$ invariant q-laminations.

Valuations on polyhedra and topological arrangements

We revisit a classical theme of (general or translation invariant) valuations on convex polyhedra. Our setting generalizes the classical one, in a ``dual'' direction to previously considered generalizations: while previous research was mostly concerned with variations of ground fields/rings, over which the vertices of polytopes are defined, we consider more general collections of defining hyperplanes. No algebraic structures are imposed on these collections. This setting allows us to uncover a close relationship between scissors congruence problems on the one hand and finite hyperplane arrangements on the other hand: there are many parallel results in these fields, for which the parallelism seems to have gone unnoticed. In particular, certain properties of the Varchenko--Gelfand algebras for arrangements translate to properties of polytope rings or valuations. Studying these properties is possible in a general topological setting, that is, in the context of the so-called topological arrangements, where hyperplanes do not have to be straight and may even have nontrivial topology.

Aperiodic points for outer billiards

Euclidean outer billiard on a regular polygon (that is not a triangle, square or a hexagon) has aperiodic points, i.e., points where all iterates of the outer billiard map are defined and yield pairwise distinct images. This result answers a question of R. Schwartz posed at ICM 2022.

Immediate renormalization of cubic complex polynomials with empty rational lamination

A cubic polynomial $P$ with a non-repelling fixed point $b$ is said to be immediately renormalizable if there exists a (connected) QL invariant filled Julia set $K^*$ such that $b\in K^*$. In that case, exactly one critical point of $P$ does not belong to $K^*$. We show that if, in addition, the Julia set of $P$ has no (pre)periodic cutpoints, then this critical point is recurrent.

A model of the cubic connectedness locus

We describe a locally connected model of the boundary of the cubic connectedness locus. The model is obtained by constructing a decomposition of the space of critical portraits and collapsing elements of the decomposition into points. This model is similar to a quotient of the quadratic combinatorial locus where all baby Mandelbrot sets are collapsed to points. All fibers of the model, possibly except one, are connected. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Yuri Ilyich Lyubich.

Maps with no a priori bounds

The modulus of a polynomial-like (PL) map is an important invariant that controls distortion of the straightening map and, hence, geometry of the corresponding PL Julia set. Lower bounds on the modulus, called complex a priori bounds, are known in a great variety of contexts. For any rational function we complement this by an upper bound for moduli of PL maps in the satellite case that depends only on the relative period and the degree of the PL map. This rules out a priori bounds in the satellite case with unbounded relative periods. We also apply our tools to obtain lower bounds for hyperbolic lengths of geodesics in the infinitely renormalizable case, and to show that moduli of annuli must converge to 0 for a sequence of arbitrary renormalizations, under several conditions all of which are shown to be necessary.

Lavaurs algorithm for cubic symmetric polynomials

To investigate the degree $d$ connectedness locus, Thurston studied \emph{$\sigma_d$-invariant laminations}, where $\sigma_d$ is the $d$-tupling map on the unit circle, and built a topological model for the space of quadratic polynomials $f_c(z) = z^2 +c$. In the same spirit, we consider the space of all \emph{cubic symmetric polynomials} $f_\lambda(z)=z^3+\lambda^2 z$ in three articles. In the first one we construct the lamination $C_sCL$ together with the induced factor space $\mathbb{S}/C_sCL$ of the unit circle $\mathbb{S}$. As will be verified in the third paper, $\mathbb{S}/C_sCL$ is a monotone model of the \emph{cubic symmetric connectedness locus}, i.e., the space of all cubic symmetric polynomials with connected Julia sets. In the present paper, the second in the series, we develop an algorithm for constructing $C_sCL$ analogous to the Lavaurs algorithm for constructing a combinatorial model $\mathcal{M}^{comb}_2$ of the Mandelbrot set $\mathcal{M}_2$.

Upper bounds for the moduli of polynomial-like maps

We establish a version of the Pommerenke-Levin-Yoccoz inequality for the modulus of a polynomial-like restriction of a global polynomial and give two applications. First it is shown that if the modulus of a polynomial-like restriction of an arbitrary polynomial is bounded from below then this forces bounded combinatorics. The second application concerns parameter slices of cubic polynomials given by a non-repelling value of a fixed point multiplier. Namely, the intersection of the main cubioid and the multiplier slice lies in the closure of the principal hyperbolic domain, with only possible exception of queer components.

Symmetric Cubic Laminations

To investigate the degree $d$ connectedness locus, Thur\-ston studied \emph{$σ_d$-invariant laminations}, where $σ_d$ is the $d$-tupling map on the unit circle, and built a topological model for the space of quadratic polynomials $f(z) = z^2 +c$. In the spirit of Thurston's work, we consider the space of all \emph{cubic symmetric polynomials} $f_λ(z)=z^3+λ^2 z$ in a series of three articles. In the present paper, the first in the series, we construct a lamination $C_sCL$ together with the induced factor space ${\mathbb{S}}/C_sCL$ of the unit circle ${\mathbb{S}}$. As will be verified in the third paper of the series, ${\mathbb{S}}/C_sCL$ is a monotone model of the \emph{cubic symmetric connected locus}, i.e. the space of all cubic symmetric polynomials with connected Julia sets.

Modeling core parts of Zakeri slices I

The paper deals with cubic 1-variable polynomials whose Julia sets are connected. Fixing a bounded type rotation number, we obtain a slice of such polynomials with the origin being a fixed Siegel point of the specified rotation number. Such slices as parameter spaces were studied by S. Zakeri, so we call them Zakeri slices. We give a model of the central part of a slice (the subset of the slice that can be approximated by hyperbolic polynomials with Jordan curve Julia sets), and a continuous projection from the central part to the model. The projection is defined dynamically and agrees with the dynamical-analytic parameterization of the Principal Hyperbolic Domain by Petersen and Tan Lei.

Cutpoints of invariant subcontinua of polynomial Julia sets

We prove fixed point results for branched covering maps $f$ of the plane. For complex polynomials $P$ with Julia set $J_P$ these imply that periodic cutpoints of some invariant subcontinua of $J_P$ are also cutpoints of $J_P$. We deduce that, under certain assumptions on invariant subcontinua $Q$ of $J_P$, every Riemann ray to $Q$ landing at a periodic repelling/parabolic point $x\in Q$ is isotopic to a Riemann ray to $J_P$ relative to $Q$.

Invariant spanning trees for quadratic rational maps

We study Thurston equivalence classes of quadratic post-critically finite branched coverings. For these maps, we introduce and study invariant spanning trees. We give a computational procedure for searching for invariant spanning trees. This procedure uses bisets over the fundamental group of a punctured sphere. We also introduce a new combinatorial invariant of Thurston classes - the ivy graph.

On critical renormalization of complex polynomials

Holomorphic renormalization plays an important role in complex polynomial dynamics. We consider certain conditions guaranteeing that a polynomial which does not admit a polynomial-like connected Julia set still admits an invariant continuum on which it is topologically conjugate to a lower degree polynomial. This invariant continuum may contain extra critical points of the original polynomial that are not visible in the dynamical plane of the conjugate polynomial. Thus, we extend the notions of holomorphic renormalization and polynomial-like maps and describe a setup where new generalized versions of these notions are applicable and yield useful topological conjugacies.

Location of Siegel capture polynomials in parameter spaces

A cubic polynomial $f$ with a periodic Siegel disk containing an eventual image of a critical point is said to be a \emph{Siegel capture polynomial}. If the Siegel disk is invariant, we call $f$ a \emph{IS-capture polynomial} (or just an IS-capture; IS stands for Invariant Siegel). We study the location of IS-capture polynomials in the parameter space of all cubic polynomials and show that any IS-capture is on the boundary of a unique hyperbolic component determined by the rational lamination of the map. We also relate IS-captures to the cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain and its closure (by definition, the \emph{cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain} consists of cubic hyperbolic polynomials with Jordan curve Julia sets) and prove that, in the slice of cubic polynomials given by a fixed multiplier at one of the fixed points, the closure of the cubic principal hyperbolic domain might possibly only have bounded complementary domains $U$ such that (1) critical points of $f\in U$ are distinct and belong to $J(f)$, and (2) $J(f)$ has positive Lebesgue measure and carries an invariant line field.
