A framework to evaluate the performance of Variational Quantum Algorithms

Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) are promising methods for solving combinatorial optimization problems on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. However, benchmarking VQAs is difficult due to their stochastic behavior and the lack of standardized performance criteria. This work introduces a general framework for evaluating VQAs applied to Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems. The framework uses three complementary metrics: feasibility, quality, and reproducibility. It also introduces a quality diagram that visualizes trade-offs between success probability and computational resources. Reproducibility is formalized using Shannon entropy, and a decision rule is defined for selecting algorithms under resource constraints. As a demonstration, the framework is applied to several VQAs using Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) cost functions and different shot counts on a 16-qubit QUBO instance. The results show how the framework supports systematic benchmarking and provides a foundation for adaptive algorithm selection in hybrid quantum-classical workflows.

Nonlinear Regge trajectories and saturation of the Hagedorn spectrum

We argue that two seemingly different phenomena, namely the well-known saturation of the Hagedorn exponential distribution and the less familiar saturation of Regge trajectories at resonance masses $m\approx$ 2-2.5 GeV are related and have the same origin: quark deconfinement. We show that the slope of the real part of non-linear Regge trajectories determines the prefactor $f(m)$ in Hagedorn's resonance mass density distribution $ρ(m)$. While the Hagedorn distribution comes from statistics, Regge trajectories contain dynamics.

Regge phenomenology and coherent photoproduction of charmonium in peripheral heavy ion collisions

By using models based on Regge phenomenology we analyse the coherent photoproduction of charmonium in peripheral heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The centrality dependence is investigated and compared to the experimental results for coherent $J/ψ$ production in lead-lead LHC runs at the energies of 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. Theoretical uncertainties and possible limitations of the formalism are also discussed.

The reggeometric pomeron and exclusive production of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ in ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC

By using a Regge-pole model for vector meson production (VMP), successfully describing the HERA data, we analyse the correlation between VMP cross sections in photon-induced reactions at HERA and those in ultra-peripheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The rapidity distributions of proton-proton collisions at 13~TeV and lead-lead collisions at 2.76 and 5.02 TeV are investigated. The transverse momentum distribution in nuclear coherent vector meson production is also addressed. Predictions for future experiments on production of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ are presented.
