Fractional Stochastic Partial Differential Equation for Random Tangent Fields on the Sphere

This paper develops a fractional stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) to model the evolution of a random tangent vector field on the unit sphere. The SPDE is governed by a fractional diffusion operator to model the Lévy-type behaviour of the spatial solution, a fractional derivative in time to depict the intermittency of its temporal solution, and is driven by vector-valued fractional Brownian motion on the unit sphere to characterize its temporal long-range dependence. The solution to the SPDE is presented in the form of the Karhunen-Loève expansion in terms of vector spherical harmonics. Its covariance matrix function is established as a tensor field on the unit sphere that is an expansion of Legendre tensor kernels. Approximations to the solutions are studied and convergence rates of the approximation errors are given. It is demonstrated how these convergence rates depend on the decay of the power spectrum and variances of the fractional Brownian motion.

Analytical and numerical investigation on the tempered time-fractional operator with application to the Bloch equation and the two-layered problem

In the continuous time random walk model, the time-fractional operator usually expresses an infinite waiting time probability density. Different from that usual setting, this work considers the tempered time-fractional operator, which reflects a finite waiting time probability density. Firstly, we analyse the solution of a tempered benchmark problem, which shows a weak singularity near the initial time. The L1 scheme on graded mesh and the WSGL formula with correction terms are adapted to deal with the non-smooth solution, in which we compare these two methods systematically in terms of the convergence and consumed CPU time. Furthermore, a fast calculation for the time tempered Caputo fractional derivative is developed based on a sum-of-exponentials approximation, which significantly reduces the running time. Moreover, the tempered operator is applied to the Bloch equation in nuclear magnetic resonance and a two-layered problem with composite material exhibiting distinct memory effects, for which both the analytical (or semi-analytical) and numerical solutions are derived using transform techniques and finite difference methods. Data fitting results verify that the tempered time-fractional model is much effective to describe the MRI data. An important finding is that, compared with the fractional index, the tempered operator parameter could further accelerate the diffusion. The tempered model with two parameters $α$ and $ρ$ are more flexible, which can avoid choosing a too small fractional index leading to low regularity and strong heterogeneity.

On Approximation for Fractional Stochastic Partial Differential Equations on the Sphere

This paper gives the exact solution in terms of the Karhunen-Loève expansion to a fractional stochastic partial differential equation on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2}\subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ with fractional Brownian motion as driving noise and with random initial condition given by a fractional stochastic Cauchy problem. A numerical approximation to the solution is given by truncating the Karhunen-Loève expansion. We show the convergence rates of the truncation errors in degree and the mean square approximation errors in time. Numerical examples using an isotropic Gaussian random field as initial condition and simulations of evolution of cosmic microwave background (CMB) are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Multifractal scaling of products of birth--death processes

We investigate the scaling properties of products of the exponential of birth--death processes with certain given marginal discrete distributions and covariance structures. The conditions on the mean, variance and covariance functions of the resulting cumulative processes are interpreted in terms of the moment generating functions. We provide four illustrative examples of Poisson, Pascal, binomial and hypergeometric distributions. We establish the corresponding log-Poisson, log-Pascal, log-binomial and log-hypergeometric scenarios for the limiting processes, including their Rényi functions and dependence properties.
