A Note on Extended States on the Bethe Lattice

We give a new proof of the existence of absolutely continuous spectrum for the weakly disordered Anderson model on the Bethe lattice. The argument follows a general cyclicity criterion for Anderson-type Hamiltonians and reduces the problem to showing that the spectral measures of two independent copies of the rooted tree are not mutually singular. This is detected by their Hellinger affinity, and the required weak-disorder estimate follows from a short harmonic and compactness argument. We also formulate an analogous quantitative cyclicity criterion for the Anderson model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, expressed through the Schur complement of the Poisson transform of a $2\times2$ matrix spectral measure.

Miniatures on Open Quantum Systems

We presents a unified and concise exposition of key topics in the mathematical theory of open quantum systems, developed within the framework of operator algebras. The manuscript consolidates and extends a series of invited articles originally prepared for the Modern Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, combining foundational material with modern perspectives on non-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics. After introducing the C*- and W*-algebraic formulation of quantum mechanics, the paper reviews quantum dynamical systems, KMS states, and Tomita-Takesaki modular theory, as well as CCR and CAR algebras for bosonic and fermionic systems. Particular emphasis is placed on infinite systems, non-equilibrium steady states, entropy production, and linear response theory. The later sections develop a systematic treatment of small systems coupled to reservoirs, open lattice quantum spin systems, culminating in a detailed discussion of competing notions of quantum entropy production. The presentation highlights structural insights, conceptual clarity, and connections between equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena, providing a self-contained reference for researchers and graduate students in mathematical physics.

A note on two-times measurement entropy production and modular theory

Recent theoretical investigations of the two-times measurement entropy production (2TMEP) in quantum statistical mechanics have shed a new light on the mathematics and physics of the quantum-mechanical probabilistic rules. Among notable developments are the extensions of entropic fluctuation relations to quantum domain and discovery of a deep link between 2TMEP and modular theory of operator algebras. All these developments concerned the setting where the state of the system at the instant of the first measurement is the same as the state whose entropy production is measured. In this work we consider the case where these two states are different and link this more general 2TEMP to modular theory. The established connection allows us to show that under general ergodicity assumptions the 2TEMP is essentially independent of the choice of the system state at the instant of the first measurement due to a decoherence effect induced by the first measurement. This stability sheds a new light on the concept of quantum entropy production, and, in particular, on possible quantum formulations of the celebrated classical Gallavotti--Cohen Fluctuation Theorem which will be studied in the continuation of this work.

Large deviations and entropy production in viscous fluid flows

We study the motion of a particle in a random time-dependent vector field defined by the 2D Navier-Stokes system with a noise. Under suitable non-degeneracy hypotheses we prove that the empirical measures of the trajectories of the pair (velocity field, particle) satisfy the LDP with a good rate function. Moreover, we show that the law of a unique stationary solution restricted to the particle component possesses a positive smooth density with respect to the Lebesgue measure in any finite time. This allows one to define a natural concept of the entropy production, and to show that its time average is a bounded function of the trajectory. The proofs are based on a new criterion for the validity of the level-3 LDP for Markov processes and an application of a general result on the image of probability measures under smooth maps to the laws associated with the motion of the particle.

Lectures on Entropy. Part I

These lecture notes concern information-theoretic notions of entropy. They are intended for, and have been successfully taught to, undergraduate students interested inresearch careers. Besides basic notions of analysis related to convergence that are typically taught in the first or second year of undergraduate studies, no other background is needed to read the notes. The notes might be also of interest to any mathematically inclined reader who wishes to learn basic facts about notions of entropy in an elementary setting.

On entropy production of repeated quantum measurements I. General theory

We study entropy production (EP) in processes involving repeated quantum measurements of finite quantum systems. Adopting a dynamical system approach, we develop a thermodynamic formalism for the EP and study fine aspects of irreversibility related to the hypothesis testing of the arrow of time. Under a suitable chaoticity assumption, we establish a Large Deviation Principle and a Fluctuation Theorem for the EP.

Full statistics of erasure processes: Isothermal adiabatic theory and a statistical Landauer principle

We study driven finite quantum systems in contact with a thermal reservoir in the regime in which the system changes slowly in comparison to the equilibration time. The associated isothermal adiabatic theorem allows us to control the full statistics of energy transfers in quasi-static processes. Within this approach, we extend Landauer's Principle on the energetic cost of erasure processes to the level of the full statistics and elucidate the nature of the fluctuations breaking Landauer's bound.

Entropic fluctuations in thermally driven harmonic networks

We consider a general network of harmonic oscillators driven out of thermal equilibrium by coupling to several heat reservoirs at different temperatures. The action of the reservoirs is implemented by Langevin forces. Assuming the existence and uniqueness of the steady state of the resulting process, we construct a canonical entropy production functional which satisfies the Gallavotti--Cohen fluctuation theorem, i.e., a global large deviation principle with a rate function I(s) obeying the Gallavotti--Cohen fluctuation relation I(-s)-I(s)=s for all s. We also consider perturbations of our functional by quadratic boundary terms and prove that they satisfy extended fluctuation relations, i.e., a global large deviation principle with a rate function that typically differs from I(s) outside a finite interval. This applies to various physically relevant functionals and, in particular, to the heat dissipation rate of the network. Our approach relies on the properties of the maximal solution of a one-parameter family of algebraic matrix Riccati equations. It turns out that the limiting cumulant generating functions of our functional and its perturbations can be computed in terms of spectral data of a Hamiltonian matrix depending on the harmonic potential of the network and the parameters of the Langevin reservoirs. This approach is well adapted to both analytical and numerical investigations.

Entropic fluctuations in Gaussian dynamical systems

We study non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of a Gaussian dynamical system and compute in closed form the large deviation functionals describing the fluctuations of the entropy production observable with respect to the reference state and the non-equilibrium steady state. The entropy production observable of this model is an unbounded function on the phase space, and its large deviation functionals have a surprisingly rich structure. We explore this structure in some detail.

Full statistics of energy conservation in two times measurement protocols

The first law of thermodynamics states that the average total energy current between different reservoirs vanishes at large times. In this note we examine this fact at the level of the full statistics of two times measurement protocols also known as the Full Counting Statistics. Under very general conditions, we establish a tight form of the first law asserting that the fluctuations of the total energy current computed from the energy variation distribution are exponentially suppressed in the large time limit. We illustrate this general result using two examples: the Anderson impurity model and a 2D spin lattice model.

Mean-field Evolution of Fermionic Mixed States

In this paper we study the dynamics of fermionic mixed states in the mean-field regime. We consider initial states which are close to quasi-free states and prove that, under suitable assumptions on the inital data and on the many-body interaction, the quantum evolution of such initial data is well approximated by a suitable quasi-free state. In particular we prove that the evolution of the reduced one-particle density matrix converges, as the number of particles goes to infinity, to the solution of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation. Our result holds for all times, and gives effective estimates on the rate of convergence of the many-body dynamics towards the Hartree-Fock one.

Large deviations and mixing for dissipative PDE's with unbounded random kicks

We study the problem of exponential mixing and large deviations for discrete-time Markov processes associated with a class of random dynamical systems. Under some dissipativity and regularisation hypotheses for the underlying deterministic dynamics and a non-degeneracy condition for the driving random force, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of a stationary measure and its exponential stability in the Kantorovich-Wasserstein metric. We next turn to the large deviation principle and establish its validity for the occupation measures of the Markov processes in question. The obtained results extend those established earlier for the case of the bounded noise and can be applied to the 2D Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain and to the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Large deviations and Gallavotti-Cohen principle for dissipative PDE's with rough noise

We study a class of dissipative PDE's perturbed by an unbounded kick force. Under some natural assumptions, the restrictions of solutions to integer times form a homogeneous Markov process. Assuming that the noise is rough with respect to the space variables and has a non-degenerate law, we prove that the system in question satisfies a large deviation principle in tau-topology. Under some additional hypotheses, we establish a Gallavotti-Cohen type symmetry for the rate function of an entropy production functional and the strict positivity and finiteness of the mean entropy production in the stationary regime. The latter result is applicable to PDE's with strong nonlinear dissipation.

Energy conservation, counting statistics, and return to equilibrium

We study a microscopic Hamiltonian model describing an N-level quantum system S coupled to an infinitely extended thermal reservoir R. Initially, the system S is in an arbitrary state while the reservoir is in thermal equilibrium at temperature T. Assuming that the coupled system S+R is mixing with respect to the joint thermal equilibrium state, we study the Full Counting Statistics (FCS) of the energy transfers S->R and R->S in the process of return to equilibrium. The first FCS describes the increase of the energy of the system S. It is an atomic probability measure, denoted $P_{S,λ,t}$, concentrated on the set of energy differences $σ(H_S)-σ(H_S)$ ($σ(H_S)$ is the spectrum of the Hamiltonian of S, $t$ is the length of the time interval during which the measurement of the energy transfer is performed, and $λ$ is the strength of the interaction between S and R). The second FCS, $P_{R,λ,t}$, describes the decrease of the energy of the reservoir R and is typically a continuous probability measure whose support is the whole real line. We study the large time limit $t\rightarrow\infty$ of these two measures followed by the weak coupling limit $λ\rightarrow 0$ and prove that the limiting measures coincide. This result strengthens the first law of thermodynamics for open quantum systems. The proofs are based on modular theory of operator algebras and on a representation of $P_{R,λ,t}$ by quantum transfer operators.

Landauer-Büttiker and Thouless conductance

In the independent electron approximation, the average (energy/charge/entropy) current flowing through a finite sample S connected to two electronic reservoirs can be computed by scattering theoretic arguments which lead to the famous Landauer-Büttiker formula. Another well known formula has been proposed by Thouless on the basis of a scaling argument. The Thouless formula relates the conductance of the sample to the width of the spectral bands of the infinite crystal obtained by periodic juxtaposition of S. In this spirit, we define Landauer-Büttiker crystalline currents by extending the Landauer-Büttiker formula to a setup where the sample S is replaced by a periodic structure whose unit cell is S. We argue that these crystalline currents are closely related to the Thouless currents. For example, the crystalline heat current is bounded above by the Thouless heat current, and this bound saturates iff the coupling between the reservoirs and the sample is reflectionless. Our analysis leads to a rigorous derivation of the Thouless formula from the first principles of quantum statistical mechanics.

A note on the Landauer principle in quantum statistical mechanics

The Landauer principle asserts that the energy cost of erasure of one bit of information by the action of a thermal reservoir in equilibrium at temperature T is never less than $kTlog 2$. We discuss Landauer's principle for quantum statistical models describing a finite level quantum system S coupled to an infinitely extended thermal reservoir R. Using Araki's perturbation theory of KMS states and the Avron-Elgart adiabatic theorem we prove, under a natural ergodicity assumption on the joint system S+R, that Landauer's bound saturates for adiabatically switched interactions. The recent work of Reeb and Wolf on the subject is discussed and compared.

A note on reflectionless Jacobi matrices

The property that a Jacobi matrix is reflectionless is usually characterized either in terms of Weyl m-functions or the vanishing of the real part of the boundary values of the diagonal matrix elements of the resolvent. We introduce a characterization in terms of stationary scattering theory (the vanishing of the reflection coefficients) and prove that this characterization is equivalent to the usual ones. We also show that the new characterization is equivalent to the notion of being dynamically reflectionless, thus providing a short proof of an important result of [Breuer-Ryckman-Simon]. The motivation for the new characterization comes from recent studies of the non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of the electronic black box model and we elaborate on this connection.
