Charged black holes in quadratic gravity

We study electrically charged, static, spherically symmetric black holes in quadratic gravity using the conformal-to-Kundt technique, which leads to a considerable simplification of the field equations. We study the solutions using a Frobenius-like approach of power-series expansions. The indicial equations restrict the set of possible leading powers to a few cases, describing, e.g., black holes, wormholes, or naked singularities. We focus on the black hole case and derive recurrent formulas for all series coefficients of the infinite power-series expansion around the horizon. The solution is characterized by electric charge $q$, the black-hole radius $a_0$, and the Bach parameter $b$ related to the strength of the Bach tensor at the horizon. However, the Bach parameter has to be fine-tuned to ensure asymptotic flatness. The fine-tuning of $b$ for a given $q$ and $a_0$ returns up to two values, describing two branches of asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric, charged black holes in quadratic gravity. This is in agreement with previous numerical works. We discuss various physical properties of these black holes, such as their asymptotic mass, temperature, photon spheres, and black-hole shadows. A straightforward generalization to dyonic black holes in quadratic gravity is also briefly mentioned.

Kerr-Schild double copy for Kundt spacetimes of any dimension

We show that vacuum type N Kundt spacetimes in an arbitrary dimension admit a Kerr-Schild (KS) double copy. This is mostly done in a coordinate-independent way using the higher-dimensional Newman-Penrose formalism. We also discuss two kinds of non-uniqueness of an electromagnetic field corresponding to a given KS metric (i.e., its single copy) - these originate, respectively, from the rescaling freedom in the KS vector and from the non-uniqueness of the splitting of the KS metric in the flat part and the KS part. In connection to this, we show that the subset of KS pp-waves admits both null and non-null electromagnetic single copies. Since vacuum type N Kundt spacetimes are universal solutions of virtually any higher-order gravities and null fields in such backgrounds are immune to higher-order electromagnetic corrections, the KS-Kundt double copy demonstrated in the present paper also applies to large classes of modified theories.

Topological black holes in higher derivative gravity

We study static black holes in quadratic gravity with planar and hyperbolic symmetry and non-extremal horizons. We obtain a solution in terms of an infinite power-series expansion around the horizon, which is characterized by two independent integration constants -- the black hole radius and the strength of the Bach tensor at the horizon. While in Einstein's gravity, such black holes require a negative cosmological constant $\Lambda$, in quadratic gravity they can exist for any sign of $\Lambda$ and also for $\Lambda=0$. Different branches of Schwarzschild-Bach-(A)dS or purely Bachian black holes are identified which admit distinct Einstein limits. Depending on the curvature of the transverse space and the value of $\Lambda$, these Einstein limits result in (A)dS-Schwarzschild spacetimes with a transverse space of arbitrary curvature (such as black holes and naked singularities) or in Kundt metrics of the (anti-)Nariai type (i.e., dS$_2\times$S$^2$, AdS$_2\times$H$^2$, and flat spacetime). In the special case of toroidal black holes with $\Lambda=0$, we also discuss how the Bach parameter needs to be fine-tuned to ensure that the metric does not blow up near infinity and instead matches asymptotically a Ricci-flat solution.

Black holes and other spherical solutions in quadratic gravity with a cosmological constant

We study static spherically symmetric solutions to the vacuum field equations of quadratic gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant $\Lambda$. Motivated by the trace no-hair theorem, we assume the Ricci scalar to be constant throughout a spacetime. Furthermore, we employ the conformal-to-Kundt metric ansatz that is valid for all static spherically symmetric spacetimes and leads to a considerable simplification of the field equations. We arrive at a set of two ordinary differential equations and study its solutions using the Frobenius-like approach of (infinite) power series expansions. While the indicial equations considerably restrict the set of possible leading powers, careful analysis of higher-order terms is necessary to establish the existence of the corresponding classes of solutions. We thus obtain various non-Einstein generalizations of the Schwarzschild, (anti-)de Sitter [or (A)dS for short], Nariai, and Pleba\'{n}ski-Hacyan spacetimes. Interestingly, some classes of solutions allow for an arbitrary value of $\Lambda$, while other classes admit only discrete values of $\Lambda$. For most of these classes, we give recurrent formulas for all series coefficients. We determine which classes contain the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole as a special case and briefly discuss the physical interpretation of the spacetimes. In the discussion of physical properties, we naturally focus on the generalization of the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole, namely the Schwarzschild-Bach-(A)dS black hole, which possesses one additional Bach parameter. We also study its basic thermodynamical properties and observable effects on test particles caused by the presence of the Bach tensor. This work is a considerable extension of our letter [Phys. Rev. Lett., 121, 231104, 2018].

Black holes and other exact spherical solutions in Quadratic Gravity

We study static, spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to Quadratic Gravity, extending considerably our previous Rapid Communication [Phys. Rev. D 98, 021502(R) (2018)] on this topic. Using a conformal-to-Kundt metric ansatz, we arrive at a much simpler form of the field equations in comparison with their expression in the standard spherically symmetric coordinates. We present details of the derivation of this compact form of two ordinary differential field equations for two metric functions. Next, we apply analytical methods and express their solutions as infinite power series expansions. We systematically derive all possible cases admitted by such an ansatz, arriving at six main classes of solutions, and provide recurrent formulas for all the series coefficients. These results allow us to identify the classes containing the Schwarzschild black hole as a special case. It turns out that one class contains only the Schwarzschild black hole, three classes admit the Schwarzschild solution as a special subcase, and two classes are not compatible with the Schwarzschild solution at all since they have strictly nonzero Bach tensor. In our analysis, we naturally focus on the classes containing the Schwarzschild spacetime, in particular on a new family of the Schwarzschild-Bach black holes which possesses one additional non-Schwarzschild parameter corresponding to the value of the Bach tensor invariant on the horizon. We study its geometrical and physical properties, such as basic thermodynamical quantities and tidal effects on free test particles induced by the presence of the Bach tensor. We also compare our results with previous findings in the literature obtained using the standard spherically symmetric coordinates.

Exact black holes in quadratic gravity with any cosmological constant

We present a new explicit class of black holes in general quadratic gravity with a cosmological constant. These spherically symmetric Schwarzschild-Bach-(anti-)de Sitter geometries (Schwa-Bach-(A)dS), derived under the assumption of constant scalar curvature, form a three-parameter family determined by the black-hole horizon position, the value of Bach invariant on the horizon, and the cosmological constant. Using a conformal to Kundt metric ansatz, the fourth-order field equations simplify to a compact autonomous system. Its solutions are found as power series, enabling us to directly set the Bach parameter and/or cosmological constant equal to zero. To interpret these spacetimes, we analyse the metric functions. In particular, we demonstrate that for a certain range of positive cosmological constant there are both black-hole and cosmological horizons, with a static region between them. The tidal effects on free test particles and basic thermodynamic quantities are also determined.

Explicit black hole solutions in higher-derivative gravity

We present, in an explicit form, the metric for all spherically symmetric Schwarzschild-Bach black holes in Einstein-Weyl theory. In addition to the black hole mass, this complete family of spacetimes involves a parameter that encodes the value of the Bach tensor on the horizon. When this additional "non-Schwarzschild parameter" is set to zero the Bach tensor vanishes everywhere and the "Schwa-Bach" solution reduces to the standard Schwarzschild metric of general relativity. Compared with previous studies, which were mainly based on numerical integration of a complicated form of field equations, the new form of the metric enables us to easily investigate geometrical and physical properties of these black holes, such as specific tidal effects on test particles, caused by the presence of the Bach tensor, as well as fundamental thermodynamical quantities.

Exact solutions to quadratic gravity

Since all Einstein spacetimes are vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity in four dimensions, in this paper we study various aspects of non-Einstein vacuum solutions to this theory. Most such known solutions are of traceless Ricci and Petrov type N with a constant Ricci scalar. Thus we assume the Ricci scalar to be constant which leads to a substantial simplification of the field equations. We prove that a vacuum solution to quadratic gravity with traceless Ricci tensor of type N and aligned Weyl tensor of any Petrov type is necessarily a Kundt spacetime. This will considerably simplify the search for new non-Einstein solutions. Similarly, a vacuum solution to quadratic gravity with traceless Ricci type III and aligned Weyl tensor of Petrov type II or more special is again necessarily a Kundt spacetime. Then we study the general role of conformal transformations in constructing vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity. We find that such solutions can be obtained by solving one non-linear partial differential equation for a conformal factor on any Einstein spacetime or, more generally, on any background with vanishing Bach tensor. In particular, we show that all geometries conformal to Kundt are either Kundt or Robinson-Trautman, and we provide some explicit Kundt and Robinson-Trautman solutions to quadratic gravity by solving the above mentioned equation on certain Kundt backgrounds.

Type III and N universal spacetimes

Universal spacetimes are spacetimes for which all conserved symmetric rank-2 tensors, constructed as contractions of polynomials from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives of arbitrary order, are multiples of the metric. Consequently, metrics of universal spacetimes solve vacuum equations of all gravitational theories with Lagrangian being a polynomial curvature invariant constructed from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its derivatives of arbitrary order. In the literature, universal metrics are also discussed as metrics with vanishing quantum corrections and as classical solutions to string theory. Widely known examples of universal metrics are certain Ricci-flat pp waves. In this paper, we start a general study of geometric properties of universal metrics in arbitrary dimension and we arrive at a broader class of such metrics. In contrast with pp waves, these universal metrics also admit non-vanishing cosmological constant and in general do not have to possess a covariantly constant or recurrent null vector field. First, we show that a universal spacetime is necessarily a CSI spacetime, i.e. all curvature invariants constructed from the Riemann tensor and its derivatives are constant. Then we focus on type N spacetimes, where we arrive at a simple necessary and sufficient condition: a type N spacetime is universal if and only if it is an Einstein Kundt spacetime. A class of type III Kundt universal metrics is also found. Several explicit examples of universal metrics are presented.

Algebraic classification of higher dimensional spacetimes based on null alignment

We review recent developments and applications of the classification of the Weyl tensor in higher dimensional Lorentzian geometries. First, we discuss the general setup, i.e. main definitions and methods for the classification, some refinements and the generalized Newman-Penrose and Geroch-Held-Penrose formalisms. Next, we summarize general results, such as a partial extension of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem, characterization of spacetimes with vanishing (or constant) curvature invariants and the peeling behaviour in asymptotically flat spacetimes. Finally, we discuss certain invariantly defined families of metrics and their relation with the Weyl tensor classification, including: Kundt and Robinson-Trautman spacetimes; the Kerr-Schild ansatz in a constant-curvature background; purely electric and purely magnetic spacetimes; direct and (some) warped products; and geometries with certain symmetries. To conclude, some applications to quadratic gravity are also overviewed.

On a five-dimensional version of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem

Previous work has found a higher-dimensional generalization of the "geodesic part" of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem. We investigate the generalization of the "shear-free part" of the theorem. A spacetime is defined to be algebraically special if it admits a multiple Weyl Aligned Null Direction (WAND). The algebraically special property restricts the form of the "optical matrix" that defines the expansion, rotation and shear of the multiple WAND. After working out some general constraints that hold in arbitrary dimensions, we determine necessary algebraic conditions on the optical matrix of a multiple WAND in a five-dimensional Einstein spacetime. We prove that one can choose an orthonormal basis to bring the 3 x 3 optical matrix to one of three canonical forms, each involving two parameters, and we discuss the existence of an "optical structure" within these classes. Examples of solutions corresponding to each form are given. We give an example which demonstrates that our necessary algebraic conditions are not sufficient for a null vector field to be a multiple WAND, in contrast with the 4d result.

Ricci identities in higher dimensions

We explore connections between geometrical properties of null congruences and the algebraic structure of the Weyl tensor in n>4 spacetime dimensions. First, we present the full set of Ricci identities on a suitable "null" frame, thus completing the extension of the Newman-Penrose formalism to higher dimensions. Then we specialize to geodetic null congruences and study specific consequences of the Sachs equations. These imply, for example, that Kundt spacetimes are of type II or more special (like for n=4) and that for odd n a twisting geodetic WAND must also be shearing (in contrast to the case n=4).

On higher dimensional Einstein spacetimes with a warped extra dimension

We study a class of higher dimensional warped Einstein spacetimes with one extra dimension. These were originally identified by Brinkmann as those Einstein spacetimes that can be mapped conformally on other Einstein spacetimes, and have subsequently appeared in various contexts to describe, e.g., different braneworld models or warped black strings. After clarifying the relation between the general Brinkmann metric and other more specific coordinate systems, we analyze the algebraic type of the Weyl tensor of the solutions. In particular, we describe the relation between Weyl aligned null directions (WANDs) of the lower dimensional Einstein slices and of the full spacetime, which in some cases can be algebraically more special. Possible spacetime singularities introduced by the warp factor are determined via a study of scalar curvature invariants and of Weyl components measured by geodetic observers. Finally, we illustrate how Brinkmann's metric can be employed to generate new solutions by presenting the metric of spinning and accelerating black strings in five dimensional anti-de Sitter space.

Type III and N Einstein spacetimes in higher dimensions: general properties

The Sachs equations governing the evolution of the optical matrix of geodetic WANDs (Weyl aligned null directions) are explicitly solved in n-dimensions in several cases which are of interest in potential applications. This is then used to study Einstein spacetimes of type III and N in the higher dimensional Newman-Penrose formalism, considering both Kundt and expanding (possibly twisting) solutions. In particular, the general dependence of the metric and of the Weyl tensor on an affine parameter r is obtained in a closed form. This allows us to characterize the peeling behaviour of the Weyl "physical" components for large values of r, and thus to discuss, e.g., how the presence of twist affects polarization modes, and qualitative differences between four and higher dimensions. Further, the r-dependence of certain non-zero scalar curvature invariants of expanding spacetimes is used to demonstrate that curvature singularities may generically be present. As an illustration, several explicit type N/III spacetimes that solve Einstein's vacuum equations (with a possible cosmological constant) in higher dimensions are finally presented.

Generalization of the Geroch-Held-Penrose formalism to higher dimensions

Geroch, Held and Penrose invented a formalism for studying spacetimes admitting one or two preferred null directions. This approach is very useful for studying algebraically special spacetimes and their perturbations. In the present paper, the formalism is generalized to higher-dimensional spacetimes. This new formalism leads to equations that are considerably simpler than those of the higher-dimensional Newman-Penrose formalism employed previously. The dynamics of p-form test fields is analyzed using the new formalism and some results concerning algebraically special p-form fields are proved.

On asymptotically flat algebraically special spacetimes in higher dimensions

We analyze asymptotic properties of higher-dimensional vacuum spacetimes admitting a "non-degenerate" geodetic multiple WAND. After imposing a fall-off condition necessary for asymptotic flatness, we determine the behaviour of the Weyl tensor as null infinity is approached along the WAND. This demonstrates that these spacetimes do not "peel-off" and do not contain gravitational radiation (in contrast to their four-dimensional counterparts). In the non-twisting case, the uniqueness of the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini metric is also proven.

Higher dimensional Kerr-Schild spacetimes

We investigate general properties of Kerr-Schild (KS) metrics in n>4 spacetime dimensions. First, we show that the Weyl tensor is of type II or more special if the null KS vector k is geodetic (or, equivalently, if T_{ab}k^ak^b=0). We subsequently specialize to vacuum KS solutions, which naturally split into two families of non-expanding and expanding metrics. After demonstrating that non-expanding solutions are equivalent to the known class of vacuum Kundt solutions of type N, we analyze expanding solutions in detail. We show that they can only be of the type II or D, and we characterize optical properties of the multiple Weyl aligned null direction (WAND) k. In general, k has caustics corresponding to curvature singularities. In addition, it is generically shearing. Nevertheless, we arrive at a possible "weak" n>4 extension of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem, limited to the KS class, which matches previous conclusions for general type III/N solutions. In passing, properties of Myers-Perry black holes and black rings related to our results are also briefly discussed.
