The extreme high frequency peaked BL Lac 1517+656

We present optical spectroscopy data that allowed a measurement of the redshift for the X-ray selected BL Lacertae object 1517+656. With a redshift of z = 0.702 this object has an absolute magnitude of B = -26.4 and is also an extremely powerful radio and X-ray source. Although being a high frequency peaked BL Lac, this object is one of the most luminous BL Lac objects known so far. Being also a candidate for gravitational lensing, this object is of high interest for the BL Lac research. Assuming several cosmological models and a realistic redshift for the lensed object, we find that 1517+656 has a mass > 2 * 10^12 solar masses and a high velocity dispersion > 350 km/sec.

X-ray luminous radio-quiet high redshift QSOs in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey

X-ray luminous radio-quiet high redshift QSOs are rare and can be used for the investigation of several important astronomical questions. We have conducted a large area survey for radio-quiet high redshift QSOs in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, from which QSO candidates are selected using the digitized objective prism spectra from the Hamburg Quasar Survey. The 22 candidates with Galactic latitudes larger than $35^o$ were observed with the 2.16m telescope at Xinglong station of Beijing Astronomical Observatory. Among the 19 new QSOs in our sample, six are radio-quiet QSOs with redshifts larger than 1.3 and three of them have redshifts larger than 2. Thus we have doubled the number of known X-ray luminous, radio-quiet high redshift QSOs in the surveyed sky area. The distribution of $f_{1.4GHz}/f_{1keV}$ of radio-loud and radio-quiet QSOs in this area shows two well separated peaks. This can be taken as an evidence for different emission mechanisms of the observed X-rays in the two subgroups.

Evolutionary behaviour of BL Lac objects

We present analysis of a new flux limited sample of 72 X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects with known redshifts for 59 of them. We find the more X-ray dominated BL Lac having negative evolution with redshift, while intermediate objects show no evolution at all. X-ray dominated objects show higher X-ray luminosities and flatter X-ray spectra than the intermediate ones. We were also able to determine the redshift of 1517+656, which is part of our sample and is the optically most luminous X-ray selected BL Lac known so far.
