Eigenvalue estimates on weighted manifolds

We derive various eigenvalue estimates for the Hodge Laplacian acting on differential forms on weighted Riemannian manifolds. Our estimates unify and extend various results from the literature and we provide a number of geometric applications. In particular, we derive an inequality which relates the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator for (f)-minimal hypersurfaces and the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian.

On p-biharmonic curves

In this article we study $p$-biharmonic curves as a natural generalization of biharmonic curves. In contrast to biharmonic curves $p$-biharmonic curves do not need to have constant geodesic curvature if $p=\frac{1}{2}$ in which case their equation reduces to the one of $\frac{1}{2}$-elastic curves. We will classify $\frac{1}{2}$-biharmonic curves on closed surfaces and three-dimensional space forms making use of the results obtained for $\frac{1}{2}$-elastic curves from the literature. By making a connection to magnetic geodesic we are able to prove the existence of $\frac{1}{2}$-biharmonic curves on closed surfaces. In addition, we will discuss the stability of $p$-biharmonic curves with respect to normal variations. Our analysis highlights some interesting relations between $p$-biharmonic and $p$-elastic curves.

On the equivariant stability of harmonic self-maps of cohomogeneity one manifolds

The systematic study of harmonic self-maps on cohomogeneity one manifolds has recently been initiated by Püttmann and the second named author in \cite{MR4000241}. In this article we investigate the corresponding Jacobi equation describing the equivariant stability of such harmonic self-maps. Besides several general statements concerning their equivariant stability we explicitly solve the Jacobi equation for some harmonic self-maps in the cases of spheres, special orthogonal groups and $\SU(3)$. In particular, we show by an explicit calculation that for specific cohomogeneity one actions on the sphere the identity map is equivariantly stable.

On polyharmonic helices in space forms

In this article we study polyharmonic curves of constant curvature where we mostly focus on the case of curves on the sphere. We classify polyharmonic curves of constant curvature in three-dimensional space forms and derive an explicit family of polyharmonic curves on the sphere. Our results give new insights into the geometric structure of higher order variational problems.

On p-harmonic self-maps of spheres

In this manuscript we study rotationally $p$-harmonic maps between spheres. We prove that for $p\in\mathbb{N}$ given, there exist infinitely many $p$-harmonic self-maps of $\mathbb{S}^m$ for each $m\in\mathbb{N}$ with $p m$, the identity map of $\mathbb{S}^m$ is stable when interpreted as a $p$-harmonic self-map of $\mathbb{S}^m$.

Dirac-harmonic maps with potential

We study the influence of an additional scalar potential on various geometric and analytic properties of Dirac-harmonic maps. We will create a mathematical wish list of the possible benefits from inducing the potential term and point out that the latter cannot be achieved in general. Finally, we focus on several potentials that are motivated from supersymmetric quantum field theory.

On finite energy solutions of 4-harmonic and ES-4-harmonic maps

4-harmonic and ES-4-harmonic maps are two generalizations of the well-studied harmonic map equation which are both given by a nonlinear elliptic partial differential equation of order eight. Due to the large number of derivatives it is very difficult to find any difference in the qualitative behavior of these two variational problems. In this article we prove that finite energy solutions of both 4-harmonic and ES-4-harmonic maps from Euclidean space must be trivial. However, the energy that we require to be finite is different for 4-harmonic and ES-4-harmonic maps pointing out a first difference between these two variational problems.

Unique continuation properties for polyharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds

Polyharmonic maps of order k (briefly, k-harmonic maps) are a natural generalization of harmonic and biharmonic maps. These maps are defined as the critical points of suitable higher order functionals which extend the classical energy functional for maps between Riemannian manifolds. The main aim of this paper is to investigate the so-called unique continuation principle. More precisely, assuming that the domain is connected, we shall prove the following extensions of results known in the harmonic and biharmonic case: (i) if a k-harmonic map is harmonic on an open subset, then it is harmonic everywhere; (ii) if two k-harmonic maps agree on a open subset, then they agree everywhere; (iii) if, for a k-harmonic map to the n-dimensional sphere, an open subset of the domain is mapped into the equator, then all the domain is mapped into the equator.

On the evolution of regularized Dirac-harmonic Maps from closed surfaces

We study the evolution equations for a regularized version of Dirac-harmonic maps from closed Riemannian surfaces. We establish the existence of a global weak solution for the regularized problem, which is smooth away from finitely many singularities. Moreover, we discuss the convergence of the evolution equations and address the question if we can remove the regularization in the end.

Some analytic results on interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps

In this article we study various analytic aspects of interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds where we mostly focus on the case of a spherical target. The latter are critical points of an energy functional that interpolates between the functionals for harmonic and biharmonic maps. In the case of a spherical target we will derive a conservation law and use it to show the smoothness of weak solutions. Moreover, we will obtain several classification results for interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps.

Harmonic maps with torsion

In this article we introduce a natural extension of the well-studied equation for harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds by assuming that the target manifold is equipped with a connection that is metric but has non-vanishing torsion. Such connections have already been classified in the work of Cartan. The maps under consideration do not arise as critical points of an energy functional leading to interesting mathematical challenges. We will perform a first mathematical analysis of these maps which we will call harmonic maps with torsion.

Nonlinear Dirac equations, Monotonicity Formulas and Liouville Theorems

We study the qualitative behavior of nonlinear Dirac equations arising in quantum field theory on complete Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we derive monotonicity formulas and Liouville theorems for solutions of these equations. Finally, we extend our analysis to Dirac-harmonic maps with curvature term.

The stress-energy tensor for polyharmonic maps

We derive the stress-energy tensor for polyharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we employ the stress-energy tensor to characterize polyharmonic maps where we pay special attention to triharmonic maps.

Higher order energy functionals

The study of higher order energy functionals was first proposed by Eells and Sampson in 1965 and, later, by Eells and Lemaire in 1983. These functionals provide a natural generalization of the classical energy functional. More precisely, Eells and Sampson suggested the investigation of the so-called $ES-r$-energy functionals $ E_r^{ES}(φ)=(1/2)\int_{M}\,|(d^*+d)^r (φ)|^2\,dV$, where $ φ:M \to N$ is a map between two Riemannian manifolds. In the initial part of this paper we shall clarify some relevant issues about the definition of an $ES-r$-harmonic map, i.e, a critical point of $ E_r^{ES}(φ)$. That seems important to us because in the literature other higher order energy functionals have been studied by several authors and consequently some recent examples need to be discussed and extended: this shall be done in the first two sections of this work, where we obtain the first examples of proper critical points of $E_r^{ES}(φ)$ when $N={\mathbb S}^m$ $(r \geq4,\, m\geq3)$, and we also prove some general facts which should be useful for future developments of this subject. Next, we shall compute the Euler-Lagrange system of equations for $E_r^{ES}(φ)$ for $r=4$. We shall apply this result to the study of maps into space forms and to rotationally symmetric maps: in particular, we shall focus on the study of various family of conformal maps. In Section 4, we shall also show that, even if $2 r > \dim M$, the functionals $ E_r^{ES}(φ)$ may not satisfy the classical Palais-Smale Condition (C). In the final part of the paper we shall study the second variation and compute index and nullity of some significant examples.

Stable cosmological Kaluza-Klein Spacetimes

We consider the Einstein flow on a product manifold with one factor being a compact quotient of 3-dimensional hyperbolic space without boundary and the other factor being a flat torus of fixed arbitrary dimension. We consider initial data symmetric with respect to the toroidal directions. We obtain effective Einsteinian field equations coupled to a wave map type and a Maxwell type equation by the Kaluza-Klein reduction. The Milne universe solves those field equations when the additional parts arising from the toroidal dimensions are chosen constant. We prove future stability of the Milne universe within this class of spacetimes, which establishes stability of a large class of cosmological Kaluza-Klein vacua. A crucial part of the proof is the implementation of a new gauge for Maxwell-type equations in the cosmological context, which we refer to as slice-adapted gauge.

On interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds

Motivated from the action functional for bosonic strings with extrinsic curvature term we introduce an action functional for maps between Riemannian manifolds that interpolates between the actions for harmonic and biharmonic maps. Critical points of this functional will be called interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps. In this article we initiate a rigorous mathematical treatment of this functional and study various basic aspects of its critical points.
