Type II String Theory on Calabi-Yau Manifolds with Torsion and Non-Abelian Discrete Gauge Symmetries

We provide the first explicit example of Type IIB string theory compactification on a globally defined Calabi-Yau threefold with torsion which results in a four-dimensional effective theory with a non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetry. Our example is based on a particular Calabi-Yau manifold, the quotient of a product of three elliptic curves by a fixed point free action of Z_2 x Z_2. Its cohomology contains torsion classes in various degrees. The main technical novelty is in determining the multiplicative structure of the (torsion part of) the cohomology ring, and in particular showing that the cup product of second cohomology torsion elements goes non-trivially to the fourth cohomology. This specifies a non-Abelian, Heisenberg-type discrete symmetry group of the four-dimensional theory.

Two One-Parameter Special Geometries

The special geometries of two recently discovered Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h^{11}=1$ are analyzed in detail. These correspond to the 'minimal three-generation' manifolds with $h^{21}=4$ and the `24-cell' threefolds with $h^{21}=1$. It turns out that the one-dimensional complex structure moduli spaces for these manifolds are both very similar and surprisingly complicated. Both have 6 hyperconifold points and, in addition, there are singularities of the Picard-Fuchs equation where the threefold is smooth but the Yukawa coupling vanishes. Their fundamental periods are the generating functions of lattice walks, and we use this fact to explain why the singularities are all at real values of the complex structure.

Complete Intersection Fibers in F-Theory

Global F-theory compactifications whose fibers are realized as complete intersections form a richer set of models than just hypersurfaces. The detailed study of the physics associated with such geometries depends crucially on being able to put the elliptic fiber into Weierstrass form. While such a transformation is always guaranteed to exist, its explicit form is only known in a few special cases. We present a general algorithm for computing the Weierstrass form of elliptic curves defined as complete intersections of different codimensions and use it to solve all cases of complete intersections of two equations in an ambient toric variety. Using this result, we determine the toric Mordell-Weil groups of all 3134 nef partitions obtained from the 4319 three-dimensional reflexive polytopes and find new groups that do not exist for toric hypersurfaces. As an application, we construct several models that cannot be realized as toric hypersurfaces, such as the first toric SU(5) GUT model in the literature with distinctly charged 10 representations and an F-theory model with discrete gauge group Z_4 whose dual fiber has a Mordell-Weil group with Z_4 torsion.

F-theory on Genus-One Fibrations

We argue that M-theory compactified on an arbitrary genus-one fibration, that is, an elliptic fibration which need not have a section, always has an F-theory limit when the area of the genus-one fiber approaches zero. Such genus-one fibrations can be easily constructed as toric hypersurfaces, and various $SU(5)\times U(1)^n$ and $E_6$ models are presented as examples. To each genus-one fibration one can associate a $τ$-function on the base as well as an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ representation which together define the IIB axio-dilaton and 7-brane content of the theory. The set of genus-one fibrations with the same $τ$-function and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ representation, known as the Tate-Shafarevich group, supplies an important degree of freedom in the corresponding F-theory model which has not been studied carefully until now. Six-dimensional anomaly cancellation as well as Witten's zero-mode count on wrapped branes both imply corrections to the usual F-theory dictionary for some of these models. In particular, neutral hypermultiplets which are localized at codimension-two fibers can arise. (All previous known examples of localized hypermultiplets were charged under the gauge group of the theory.) Finally, in the absence of a section some novel monodromies of Kodaira fibers are allowed which lead to new breaking patterns of non-Abelian gauge groups.

Geometric Engineering in Toric F-Theory and GUTs with U(1) Gauge Factors

An algorithm to systematically construct all Calabi-Yau elliptic fibrations realized as hypersurfaces in a toric ambient space for a given base and gauge group is described. This general method is applied to the particular question of constructing SU(5) GUTs with multiple U(1) gauge factors. The basic data consists of a top over each toric divisor in the base together with compactification data giving the embedding into a reflexive polytope. The allowed choices of compactification data are integral points in an auxiliary polytope. In order to ensure the existence of a low-energy gauge theory, the elliptic fibration must be flat, which is reformulated into conditions on the top and its embedding. In particular, flatness of SU(5) fourfolds imposes additional linear constraints on the auxiliary polytope of compactifications, and is therefore non-generic. Abelian gauge symmetries arising in toric F-theory compactifications are studied systematically. Associated to each top, the toric Mordell-Weil group determining the minimal number of U(1) factors is computed. Furthermore, all SU(5)-tops and their splitting types are determined and used to infer the pattern of U(1) matter charges.

Supersymmetric Hidden Sectors for Heterotic Standard Models

Within the context of the weakly coupled E8 x E8 heterotic string, we study the hidden sector of heterotic standard model compactifications to four-dimensions. Specifically, we present a class of hidden sector vector bundles - composed of the direct sum of line bundles only - that, together with an effective bulk five-brane, renders the heterotic standard model entirely N=1 supersymmetric. Two explicit hidden sectors are constructed and analyzed in this context; one with the gauge group E7 x U(1) arising from a single line bundle and a second with an SO(12) x U(1) x U(1) gauge group constructed from the direct sum of two line bundles. Each hidden sector bundle is shown to satisfy all requisite physical constraints within a finite region of the Kahler cone. We also clarify that the first Chern class of the line bundles need not be even in our context, as has often been imposed in the model building literature.

New Global F-theory GUTs with U(1) symmetries

We construct global F-theory GUTs with SU(5) x U(1) gauge group defined by specifying a fully resolved Calabi-Yau fourfold and consistent four-form G-flux. Its specific U(1) charged matter spectrum allows the desired Yukawa couplings, but forbids dangerous proton decay operators. The model we find: (1) does not follow from an underlying higgsed E8 gauge group (2) leaves the class of theories that can be analyzed with current split-spectral cover techniques. This avoids recently proposed no-go theorems for models with hypercharge flux, as required to break the GUT group. The appearance of additional fields is related geometrically to considering a more general class of sections and 4-1 splits. We show explicitly that the four-dimensional chiral matter index can still be computed using three-dimensional one-loop Chern-Simons terms.

Global embeddings for branes at toric singularities

We describe how local toric singularities, including the Toric Lego construction, can be embedded in compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. We study in detail the addition of D-branes, including non-compact flavor branes as typically used in semi-realistic model building. The global geometry provides constraints on allowable local models. As an illustration of our discussion we focus on D3 and D7-branes on (the partially resolved) (dP0)^3 singularity, its embedding in a specific Calabi-Yau manifold as a hypersurface in a toric variety, the related type IIB orientifold compactification, as well as the corresponding F-theory uplift. Our techniques generalize naturally to complete intersections, and to a large class of F-theory backgrounds with singularities.

Counting Points and Hilbert Series in String Theory

The problem of counting points is revisited from the perspective of reflexive 4-dimensional polytopes. As an application, the Hilbert series of the 473,800,776 reflexive polytopes (equivalently, their Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces) are computed.

The MSSM Spectrum from (0,2)-Deformations of the Heterotic Standard Embedding

We construct supersymmetric compactifications of E_8 \times E_8 heterotic string theory which realise exactly the massless spectrum of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at low energies. The starting point is the standard embedding on a Calabi-Yau threefold which has Hodge numbers (h^11,h^21) = (1,4) and fundamental group Z_12, which gives an E_6 grand unified theory with three net chiral generations. The gauge symmetry is then broken to that of the standard model by a combination of discrete Wilson lines and continuous deformation of the gauge bundle. On eight distinct branches of the moduli space, we find stable bundles with appropriate cohomology groups to give exactly the massless spectrum of the MSSM.

Toric Elliptic Fibrations and F-Theory Compactifications

The 102581 flat toric elliptic fibrations over P^2 are identified among the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces that arise from the 473800776 reflexive 4-dimensional polytopes. In order to analyze their elliptic fibration structure, we describe the precise relation between the lattice polytope and the elliptic fibration. The fiber-divisor-graph is introduced as a way to visualize the embedding of the Kodaira fibers in the ambient toric fiber. In particular in the case of non-split discriminant components, this description is far more accurate than previous studies. The discriminant locus and Kodaria fibers groups of all 102581 elliptic fibrations are computed. The maximal gauge group is SU(27), which would naively be in contradiction with 6-dimensional anomaly cancellation.

Numerical Hermitian Yang-Mills Connections and Kahler Cone Substructure

We further develop the numerical algorithm for computing the gauge connection of slope-stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular, recent work on the generalized Donaldson algorithm is extended to bundles with Kahler cone substructure on manifolds with h^{1,1}>1. Since the computation depends only on a one-dimensional ray in the Kahler moduli space, it can probe slope-stability regardless of the size of h^{1,1}. Suitably normalized error measures are introduced to quantitatively compare results for different directions in Kahler moduli space. A significantly improved numerical integration procedure based on adaptive refinements is described and implemented. Finally, an efficient numerical check is proposed for determining whether or not a vector bundle is slope-stable without computing its full connection.

Discrete Wilson Lines in F-Theory

F-theory models are constructed where the 7-brane has a non-trivial fundamental group. The base manifolds used are a toric Fano variety and a smooth toric threefold coming from a reflexive polyhedron. The discriminant locus of the elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfold can be chosen such that one irreducible component it is not simply connected (namely, an Enriques surface) and supports a non-Abelian gauge theory.

Numerical Hermitian Yang-Mills Connections and Vector Bundle Stability in Heterotic Theories

A numerical algorithm is presented for explicitly computing the gauge connection on slope-stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau manifolds. To illustrate this algorithm, we calculate the connections on stable monad bundles defined on the K3 twofold and Quintic threefold. An error measure is introduced to determine how closely our algorithmic connection approximates a solution to the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations. We then extend our results by investigating the behavior of non slope-stable bundles. In a variety of examples, it is shown that the failure of these bundles to satisfy the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations, including field-strength singularities, can be accurately reproduced numerically. These results make it possible to numerically determine whether or not a vector bundle is slope-stable, thus providing an important new tool in the exploration of heterotic vacua.

On Free Quotients of Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Manifolds

In order to find novel examples of non-simply connected Calabi-Yau threefolds, free quotients of complete intersections in products of projective spaces are classified by means of a computer search. More precisely, all automorphisms of the product of projective spaces that descend to a free action on the Calabi-Yau manifold are identified.

Stabilizing All Kahler Moduli in Type IIB Orientifolds

We describe a simple and robust mechanism that stabilizes all Kahler moduli in Type IIB orientifold compactifications. This is shown to be possible with just one non-perturbative contribution to the superpotential coming from either a D3-instanton or D7-branes wrapped on an ample divisor. This moduli-stabilization mechanism is similar to and motivated by the one used in the fluxless G_2 compactifications of M-theory. After explaining the general idea, explicit examples of Calabi-Yau orientifolds with one and three Kahler moduli are worked out. We find that the stabilized volumes of all two- and four-cycles as well as the volume of the Calabi-Yau manifold are controlled by a single parameter, namely, the volume of the ample divisor. This feature would dramatically constrain any realistic models of particle physics embedded into such compactifications. Broad consequences for phenomenology are discussed, in particular the dynamical solution to the strong CP-problem within the framework.

A Three-Generation Calabi-Yau Manifold with Small Hodge Numbers

We present a complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifold Y that has Euler number -72 and which admits free actions by two groups of automorphisms of order 12. These are the cyclic group Z_12 and the non-Abelian dicyclic group Dic_3. The quotient manifolds have chi=-6 and Hodge numbers (h^11,h^21)=(1,4). With the standard embedding of the spin connection in the gauge group, Y gives rise to an E_6 gauge theory with 3 chiral generations of particles. The gauge group may be broken further by means of the Hosotani mechanism combined with continuous deformation of the background gauge field. For the non-Abelian quotient we obtain a model with 3 generations with the gauge group broken to that of the standard model. Moreover there is a limit in which the quotients develop 3 conifold points. These singularities may be resolved simultaneously to give another manifold with (h^11,h^21)=(2,2) that lies right at the tip of the distribution of Calabi-Yau manifolds. This strongly suggests that there is a heterotic vacuum for this manifold that derives from the 3 generation model on the quotient of Y. The manifold Y may also be realised as a hypersurface in the toric variety. The symmetry group does not act torically, nevertheless we are able to identify the mirror of the quotient manifold by adapting the construction of Batyrev.
