Multiple Critical Points in Effective Quark Models

We consider the two flavor version of the Linear Sigma Model as well as of the Nambu Jona-Lasinio model, at finite temperature and quark chemical potential, beyond the Mean Field Approximation. Using parameter values for the pion and quark current masses which weakly break chiral symmetry we show that both models can present more than one critical end point. In particular, we explicitly show that the appearance of a new critical point associated with a first order line at high temperature and low densities could help to conciliate some lattice results with model predictions. Using different techniques, we perform an extensive thermodynamical analysis to understand the physical nature of the different critical points. For both models, our results suggest that the new first order line which starts at vanishing chemical potential has a more chiral character than the usual line which displays a character more reminiscent of a liquid-gas phase transition.

On the Charge Separation Effect in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper, we discuss alternative means of measuring the possible presence of local parity violation in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We focus on the phenomenon of charge separation and introduce the charged dipole vector $\hat{Q}^c_1$, which will measure the charge separation on an event-by-event basis. Using Monte Carlo events, we demonstrate the method and its discriminating power. In particular we show that such an analysis will reveal the strength of charge separation effect and its azimuthal correlation with the reaction plane. We further show that our proposed method may be able to distinguish between the actual charge separation effect and effects due to certain two particle correlations. The connection to present measurements based on particle correlations is discussed.

Fluidity and supercriticality of the QCD matter created in relativistic heavy ion collisions

In this paper we discuss the fluidity of the hot and dense QCD matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions in comparison with various other fluids, and in particular suggest its possible supercriticality. After examining the proper way to compare non-relativistic and relativistic fluids from both thermodynamic and hydrodynamic perspectives, we propose a new fluidity measure which shows certain universality for a remarkable diversity of critical fluids. We then demonstrate that a fluid in its supercritical regime has its fluidity considerably enhanced. This may suggest a possible relationship between the seemingly good fluidity of the QCD matter produced in heavy ion collisions at center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=200 \rm AGeV$ and the supercriticality of this matter with respect to the Critical-End-Point on the QCD phase diagram. Based on such observation, we predict an even better fluidity of the matter to be created in heavy ion collisions at LHC energy and the loss of good fluidity at certain lower beam energy. Finally based on our criteria, we analyze the suitability of a hydrodynamic description for the fireball evolution in heavy ion collisions at various energies.

Remarks on possible local parity violation in heavy ion collisions

In this note we discuss some observations concerning the possible local parity violation in heavy ion collisions recently announced by the STAR Collaboration. Our results can be summarized as follows (i) the measured correlations for same charge pairs are mainly in-plain and not out of plane, (ii) if there is a parity violating component it is large and, surprisingly, of the same magnitude as the background, and (iii) the observed dependence of the signal on the transverse momentum (p_t) is consistent with a soft boost in p_t and thus in line with expectations from the proposed chiral magnetic effect.

On the energy dependence of $K/π$ fluctuations in relativistic heavy ion collisions

In this note we will discuss the energy dependence of particle ratio fluctuations in heavy ion collisions. We study how the inherent multiplicity dependence of ratio fluctuations is reflected in the excitation function of the dynamical fluctuations. Specifically, we will show that the observed excitation function of dynamical $K/π$ fluctuations is consistent with the expected dependence on the number of accepted pions and kaons in both the STAR and NA49 experiments.

Elliptic Flow at Large Viscosity

In this contribution we present an alternative scenario for the large elliptic flow observed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Motivated by recent results from Lattice QCD on flavor off-diagonal susceptibilities we argue that the matter right above $T_{c}$ can be described by single-particle dynamics in a repulsive single-particle potential, which in turn gives rise to elliptic flow. These ideas can be tested experimentally by measuring elliptic flow of heavy quarks, preferably via the measurement of $J/Ψ$ elliptic flow.

Exposing the Noncollectivity in Elliptic Flow

We show that backward-forward elliptic anisotropy correlation provides an experimentally accessible observable which distinguishes between collective and non-collective contributions to the observed elliptic anisotropy $v_2$ in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The measurement of this observable will reveal the momentum scale at which collective expansion seizes and where the elliptic anisotropy is dominated by (semi)-hard processes.

Exact Relativistic Ideal Hydrodynamical Solutions in (1+3)D with Longitudinal and Transverse Flows

A new method for solving relativistic ideal hydrodynamics in (1+3)D is developed. Longitudinal and transverse radial flows are explicitly embedded and the hydrodynamic equations are reduced to a single equation for the transverse velocity field only, which is much more tractable. As an application we use the method to find analytically all possible solutions with power dependence on proper time and transverse radius. Possible application to the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions and possible generalizations of the method are discussed.

Hadronic Fluctuations and Correlations

We will provide a review of some of the physics which can be addressed by studying fluctuations and correlations in heavy ion collisions. We will discuss Lattice QCD results on fluctuations and correlations and will put them into context with observables which have been measured in heavy-ion collisions. Special attention will be given to the QCD critical point and the first order co-existence region, and we will discuss how the measurement of fluctuations and correlations can help in an experimental search for non-trivial structures in the QCD phase diagram.

Signals of spinodal hadronization: strangeness trapping

If the deconfinement phase transformation of strongly interacting matter is of first-order and the expanding chromodynamic matter created in a high-energy nuclear collision enters the corresponding region of phase coexistence, a spinodal phase separation might occur. The matter would then condense into a number of separate blobs, each having a particular net strangeness that would remain approximately conserved during the further evolution. We investigate the effect that such `strangeness trapping' may have on strangeness-related hadronic observables. The kaon multiplicity fluctuations are significantly enhanced and thus provide a possible tool for probing the nature of the phase transition experimentally.

Strangeness at SIS energies

In this contribution we discuss the physics of strange hadrons in low energy ($\simeq 1-2 \rm AGeV$) heavy ion collision. In this energy range the relevant strange particle are the kaons and anti-kaons. The most interesting aspect concerning these particles are so called in-medium modifications. We will attempt to review the current status of understanding of these in medium modifications. In addition we will briefly discuss other issues related with kaon production, such as the nuclear equation of state and chemical equilibrium.

Event-by-Event Fluctuations

In this review, we systematically examine the principles and the practices of fluctuations such as the momentum and the charge fluctuations as applied to the heavy ion collisions. Main emphases are: (i) Fluctuations as signals of phase transition (ii) Relationship between correlation functions and fluctuations (iii) Qualitative difference between fluctuations in small systems and large systems. Whenever available, theoretical results are compared with data from RHIC and SPS.

Lifetime of a Disoriented Chiral Condensate

The lifetime of a disoriented chiral condensate formed within a heat bath of pions is calculated assuming temperatures and densities attainable at present and future heavy-ion colliders. A generalization of the reduction formula to include coherent states allows us to derive a formula for the decay rate. We predict the half-life to be between 4 and 7 fm/c, depending on the assumed pion density. We also calculate the lifetime in the presence of higher resonances and baryons, which shortens the lifetime by at most 20%.

Aspects of Chiral Symmetry

This article is an attempt to a pedagogical introduction and review into the elementary concepts of chiral symmetry in nuclear physics. Effective chiral models such as the linear and nonlinear sigma model will be discussed as well as the essential ideas of chiral perturbation theory. Some applications to the physics of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions will be presented.

Dilepton Production in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The present status of our understanding of low mass dilepton production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is discussed. The focus of the discussion will be the sensitivity of dilepton measurements to in medium changes of hadrons and the restoration of chiral symmetry. We will finally discuss how the presence of strong long wavelength pion modes, i.e. disoriented chiral condensates can be seen in the dilepton spectrum.

Excess of pions with chiral symmetry restoration

We study the effect of the chiral phase transition on pion production in hot hadronic matter. The phase of restored chiral symmetry is characterized by the appearance of the scalar $σ$-meson as a chiral partner of the pion as well as by the degeneracy of the vector and axial-vector mesons. We find rapid thermal and chemical equilibration of these degrees of freedom in the symmetric phase. Provided that the chiral transition temperature is not considerably high, the presence of a chirally symmetric phase will result in $\sim 1.6$ times more thermal pions in the final state.

Chemical relaxation time of pions in hot hadronic matter

We calculate characteristic time scales for chemical equilibration of pions in hot hadronic matter using an effective chiral Lagrangian. We find that inelastic processes involving the vector and axial vector mesons reduce the chemical equilibration time by a factor of $\sim 10$ compared to the result previously calculated in chiral perturbation theory. For a temperature of $T\sim 150 MeV$ we obtain a chemical relaxation time of $τ_{ch} \simeq 10 fm/c$, which is comparable with typical time scales for a hadronic system generated in SPS-energy heavy ion collisions. The effect of baryons is also estimated and found to be negligible for SPS-energies but important for AGS-energies. We predict, that chemical freeze-out should take place at considerable higher temperatures $ΔT \simeq 20 MeV$ than thermal freeze-out and that the hadronic phase would not sustain a pion chemical potential larger than $100 MeV$.

Pion electromagnetic form factor at finite temperature

Temperature effects on the electromagnetic couplings of pions in hot hadronic matter are studied with an effective chiral Lagrangian. We show that the Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied at non-zero temperature in the soft pion limit. The in-medium electromagnetic form factor of the pion is obtained in the time-like region and shown to be reduced in magnitude, especially near the vector-meson resonance region. Finally, we discuss the consequences of this medium effect on dilepton production from hot hadronic matter.
