Nonequilibrium functional renormalization group for interacting quantum systems

We propose a nonequilibrium version of functional renormalization within the Keldysh formalism by introducing a complex valued flow parameter in the Fermi or Bose functions of each reservoir. Our cutoff scheme provides a unified approach to equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations. We apply it to nonequilibrium transport through an interacting quantum wire coupled to two reservoirs and show that the nonequilibrium occupation induces new power law exponents for the conductance.

A gentle introduction to the functional renormalization group: the Kondo effect in quantum dots

The functional renormalization group provides an efficient description of the interplay and competition of correlations on different energy scales in interacting Fermi systems. An exact hierarchy of flow equations yields the gradual evolution from a microscopic model Hamiltonian to the effective action as a function of a continuously decreasing energy cutoff. Practical implementations rely on suitable truncations of the hierarchy, which capture nonuniversal properties at higher energy scales in addition to the universal low-energy asymptotics. As a specific example we study transport properties through a single-level quantum dot coupled to Fermi liquid leads. In particular, we focus on the temperature T=0 gate voltage dependence of the linear conductance. A comparison with exact results shows that the functional renormalization group approach captures the broad resonance plateau as well as the emergence of the Kondo scale. It can be easily extended to more complex setups of quantum dots.

Temperature induced phase averaging in one-dimensional mesoscopic systems

We analyse phase averaging in one-dimensional interacting mesoscopic systems with several barriers and show that for incommensurate positions an independent average over several phases can be induced by finite temperature. For three strong barriers with conductances G_i and mutual distances larger than the thermal length, we obtain G ~ sqrt{G_1 G_2 G_3} for the total conductance G. For an interacting wire, this implies power laws in G(T) with novel exponents, which we propose as an experimental fingerprint to distinguish temperature induced phase averaging from dephasing.

Crossover between Luttinger and Fermi liquid behavior in weakly coupled metallic chains

We use higher-dimensional bosonization to study the normal state of electrons in weakly coupled metallic chains interacting with long-range Coulomb forces. Particular attention is paid to the crossover between Luttinger and Fermi liquid behavior as the interchain hopping is varied. Although in the physically interesting case of finite but small interchain hopping the quasi-particle residue does not vanish, the single-particle Green's function exhibits the signature of Luttinger liquid behavior (i.e. anomalous scaling and spin-charge separation) in a large intermediate parameter regime. Using realistic parameters, we find that the scaling behavior in this regime is characterized by an anomalous dimension of the order of unity, as suggested by recent experiments on quasi-one-dimensional conductors. Our calculation gives new insights into the approximations inherent in higher-dimensional bosonization. We also compare our approach with other methods.

Anomalous scaling and spin-charge separation in coupled chains

We use a bosonization approach to show that the three dimensional Coulomb interaction in coupled metallic chains leads to a Luttinger liquid for vanishing inter-chain hopping $t_{\bot}$, and to a Fermi liquid for any finite $t_{\bot}$. However, for small $t_{\bot} \neq 0$ the Greens-function satisfies a homogeneity relation with a non-trivial exponent $γ_{cb}$ in a large intermediate regime. Our results offer a simple explanation for the large values of $γ_{cb}$ inferred from recent photoemission data from quasi one-dimensional conductors and might have some relevance for the understanding of the unusual properties of the high-temperature superconductors.
