Feasibility of the observation of $\eta^{\prime}$ mesic nuclei in the semi-exclusive $^{12}$C($p, dp$) reaction

We study theoretically the feasibility of the semi-exclusive $^{12}$C($p,dp$)$X$ reaction for the observation of $\eta^\prime$ mesic nuclei using the microscopic transport model JAM. The semi-exclusive measurements of the ($p,d$) reaction with protons from $\eta^\prime$ absorption are found to be significant for the observation of the $\eta^\prime$ bound states. Especially, the measurements of the energetic protons from $\eta^\prime$ non-mesic two-body absorption ($\eta^\prime NN \to NN$) are considered to be critically important. The Green's function method is used to calculate the expected spectrum of forward going deuterons corresponding to the excitation energy spectrum of the $\eta^\prime \otimes {}^{11}$C system in the semi-exclusive measurement. The semi-exclusive measurements are shown to be important in general for the $\eta^\prime$ mesic nucleus observation.

The $η$- and $η'$-nucleus interactions and the search for $η$, $η'$- mesic states

The isoscalar $η$ and $η'$ mesons are special in QCD, being linked both to chiral symmetry and to non-perturbative glue associated with the axial anomaly. The properties of these mesons in medium are sensitive to how these dynamics work in the nuclear environment. In contrast to pionic and kaonic atoms which are mainly bound by the Coulomb interaction with some corrections due to the strong force (Coulomb assisted binding), the $η$ and $η'$ as neutral mesons can only be bound by the strong interaction. Is this interaction strong enough? This topic has inspired a vigorous program of experiments, conducted in close contact with theory, One has to determine the complex $η$, $η'$-nucleus potential. Does the real part $V$ provide a sufficiently deep potential? Is the imaginary part $W$ small enough to allow for narrow states that can more easily be detected experimentally, i.e. $|W| \ll |V|$? The $η'$ effective mass is observed to be suppressed by $\approx -40$ MeV at nuclear matter density. Bound state searches are ongoing. This article gives an overview of the status of knowledge in this field together with an outlook to future experiments.

Resonances in QCD

We report on the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force meeting 'Resonances in QCD', which took place at GSI October 12-14, 2015. A group of 26 people met to discuss the physics of resonances in QCD. The aim of the meeting was defined by the following three key questions: What is needed to understand the physics of resonances in QCD? Where does QCD lead us to expect resonances with exotic quantum numbers? What experimental efforts are required to arrive at a coherent picture? For light mesons and baryons only those with ${\it up}$, ${\it down}$ and ${\it strange}$ quark content were considered. For heavy-light and heavy-heavy meson systems, those with ${\it charm}$ quarks were the focus. This document summarizes the discussions by the participants, which in turn led to the coherent conclusions we present here.

Investigating in-medium properties of the $ω$ meson via the $ω\rightarrowπ^0γ$ decay

We investigate the feasibility of studying in-medium properties of the $ω$ meson in photoproduction experiments via the decay $ω\rightarrowπ^0γ$. We use the GiBUU transport model to compare different methods of obtaining in-medium information, such as the invariant mass spectrum, transparency ratio, excitation function and momentum spectrum. We show that the final-state interaction of the pion poses a major obstacle for the interpretation of the invariant mass spectrum. The other three observables turn out to be fairly independent of final-state interactions and thus can give access to the $ω$'s in-medium properties.

Spectroscopy of eta' mesic nuclei with (p,d) reaction

We are going to perform an inclusive spectroscopy experiment of eta' mesic nuclei with the 12C(p,d) reaction to study in-medium properties of the eta' meson. In nuclear medium, the eta' meson mass may be reduced due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. In case of sufficiently large mass reduction and small absorption width of eta' at normal nuclear density, peak structures of eta' mesic states in 11C will be observed near the eta' emission threshold even in an inclusive spectrum. The experiment will be carried out at GSI with proton beam supplied by SIS using FRS as a spectrometer. The detail of the experiment is described.

In-medium Properties of Hadrons - an Overview

An overview is given over recent results on in-medium properties of hadrons, obtained in experiments with photon, proton and deuteron beams at ANKE, CBELSA/TAPS, Crystal Ball, HADES, and BigRIPS. These experiments focus on identifying spectral in-medium modifications of hadrons, frequently discussed in the context of a partial restoration of chiral symmetry at finite nuclear densities. Three experimental approaches are presented: the measurement of the transparency ratio, the meson line shape analysis, and the search for meson-nucleus bound states. Results for $ω,ϕ, $ and $ η^\prime$ mesons indicate a broadening in the nuclear medium. Corresponding inelastic in-medium meson-nucleon cross sections have been extracted. Evidence for an in-medium mass shift has not been reported. Further information on the meson-nucleus interaction is derived from a spectroscopy of meson-nucleus bound states. A critical comparison of the results with theoretical predictions is presented.

Spectroscopy of eta'-nucleus bound states at GSI-SIS

The eta' meson mass may be reduced due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. If this is the case, an eta'-nucleus system may form a nuclear bound state. We plan to carry out a missing-mass spectroscopy with the 12C(p,d) reaction at GSI-SIS. Peak structures corresponding to such a bound state may be observed even in an inclusive measurement, if the decay width is narrow enough.

Feasibility Study of Observing eta' Mesic Nuclei with (p,d) Reaction

A novel method is proposed to measure eta'(958) meson bound states in 11C nuclei by missing mass spectroscopy of the 12C(p,d) reaction near the eta' production threshold. It is shown that peak structures will be observed experimentally in an inclusive measurement in case that the in-medium eta' mass reduction is sufficiently large and that the decay width of eta' mesic states is narrow enough. Such a measurement will be feasible with the intense proton beam supplied by the SIS synchrotron at GSI combined with the good energy resolution of the fragment separator FRS.

Experimental approaches for determining in-medium properties of hadrons from photo-nuclear reactions

Properties of hadrons and their modification within strongly interacting matter provide a link between experimental observables and Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in the non-perturbative sector. The sensitivity of various observables to in-medium modifications of mesons is discussed. The transparency ratio, comparing the meson yield per nucleon within a nucleus relative to that on a free nucleon, is related to the in-medium width of the meson. While the transparency ratio can be determined for any meson lifetime the meson line shape only contains information on in-medium properties if the meson is so short-lived that it decays in the medium after production in a nuclear reaction. Light vector mesons are thus particularly suited for these investigations. The momentum distribution of mesons produced in a photo-nuclear reaction as well as the excitation function also show some sensitivity to different in-medium modification scenarios. As an example, high statistics data taken at MAMI-C on the photoproduction of ω mesons are presented.

Hadrons in strongly interacting matter

We review the current status of theories and experiments aiming at an understanding and a determination of the properties of light vector and scalar mesons inside strongly interacting hadronic matter. Starting from a discussion of the relevant symmetries of QCD and their connection with the hadronic description through QCD sum rules we then discuss hadronic models used to calculate the in-medium self-energies of hadrons and their spectral functions. The difficulties to link these calculated properties to actual observables are emphasized. Finally, we review in detail all the running experiments searching for in-medium changes of vector and scalar mesons, both with relativistic heavy-ion reactions as well as with elementary reactions on (cold) nuclei. Inconsistencies among experimental results are discussed. While almost all experiments observe a considerable broadening of vector mesons inside the nuclear medium, no evidence for mass changes is observed in the majority of the experiments.

Medium Modifcations of Mesons in Elementary Reactions and Heavy-Ion Collisions

Experimental searches for modifications of vector mesons in the nuclear medium are reviewed. Data on $ρ,ω$ and $Φ$ mesons are presented. The results have been obtained in elementary reactions with proton and photon beams as well as in heavy-ion collisions. Compared to the free particle properties, the $ω$ and $Φ$ meson are found to drop in mass at normal nuclear matter density by 9-14% and 3.5% whereas their widths are reported to increase by factors of about 16 and 3.6, respectively. For the $ρ$ meson, conflicting results on in-medium mass shifts and broadening have been published. The experimental data are compared to recent model calculations.
