Intermixing-driven surface and bulk ferromagnetism in the quantum anomalous Hall candidate MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$

The recent realizations of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ benchmark the (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ family as a promising hotbed for further QAHE improvements. The family owes its potential to its ferromagnetically (FM) ordered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ septuple layers (SL). However, the QAHE realization is complicated in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ due to the substantial antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the SL. An FM state, advantageous for the QAHE, can be stabilized by interlacing the SL with an increasing number $n$ of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. However, the mechanisms driving the FM state and the number of necessary QLs are not understood, and the surface magnetism remains obscure. Here, we demonstrate robust FM properties in MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ ($n = 2$) with $T_C \approx 12$ K and establish their origin in the Mn/Bi intermixing phenomenon by a combined experimental and theoretical study. Our measurements reveal a magnetically intact surface with a large magnetic moment, and with FM properties similar to the bulk. Our investigation thus consolidates the MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ system as perspective for the QAHE at elevated temperatures.

Strain induced stabilization of a static Jahn-Teller distortion in the O$^*$-phase of La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$

At room temperature, bulk La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$ is in the dynamic Jahn--Teller O$^*$ phase, but undergoes a transition to a static, magnetically ordered Jahn--Teller phase at lower temperatures. Here we study a $6$ unit cells thin film of this compound grown on SrTiO$_3$, resulting in small compressive strain due to a lattice mismatch of $\lesssim 0.2\%$. We combine X-ray absorption spectroscopy with multiplet ligand field theory to study the local electronic and magnetic properties of Mn in the film. We determine the Mn $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital to be $0.13\;\text{eV}$ lower in energy than the $d_{x^2-y^2}$, which is a disproportionately large splitting given the small degree of compressive strain. We interpret this as resulting from the strain providing a preferential orientation for the MnO$_6$ octahedra, which are strongly susceptible to such a deformation in the vicinity of the phase transition. Hence, they collectively elongate along the $c$ axis into a static Jahn--Teller arrangement. Furthermore, we demonstrate the strongly covalent character of La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$, with a contribution of nearly $50\%$ of the one-ligand-hole configuration $d^{5} \underline{L}^1$ to the ground state wavefunction. Finally, we find the system to be in a high-spin configuration, with the projection of the local magnetic moment on the quantization axis being about $3.7\;μ_{\text{B}}/\text{Mn}$. We show, however, that the system is close to a high-spin--low-spin transition, which might be triggered by crystal field effects.

Incipient antiferromagnetism in the Eu-doped topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$

Rare earth ions typically exhibit larger magnetic moments than transition metal ions and thus promise the opening of a wider exchange gap in the Dirac surface states of topological insulators. Yet, in a recent photoemission study of Eu-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ films, the spectra remained gapless down to $T = 20\;\text{K}$. Here, we scrutinize whether the conditions for a substantial gap formation in this system are present by combining spectroscopic and bulk characterization methods with theoretical calculations. For all studied Eu doping concentrations, our atomic multiplet analysis of the $M_{4,5}$ x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra reveals a Eu$^{2+}$ valence and confirms a large magnetic moment, consistent with a $4f^7 \; {^8}S_{7/2}$ ground state. At temperatures below $10\;\text{K}$, bulk magnetometry indicates the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. This is in good agreement with density functional theory, which predicts AFM interactions between the Eu impurities. Our results support the notion that antiferromagnetism can coexist with topological surface states in rare-earth doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and call for spectroscopic studies in the kelvin range to look for novel quantum phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Phase diagram and optical conductivity of La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4

La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (LESCO) is the member of the 214 family which exhibits the largest intervals among the structural, charge ordering (CO), magnetic, and superconducting transition temperatures. By using new dc transport measurements and data in the literature we construct the phase diagram of LESCO between x = 0.8 and 0.20. This phase diagram has been further probed in ac, by measuring the optical conductivity σ1(ω) of three single crystals with x = 0.11, 0.125, and 0.16 between 10 and 300 K in order to associate the extra-Drude peaks often observed in the 214 family with a given phase. The far-infrared peak we detect in underdoped LESCO is the hardest among them, survives up to room temperature and is associated with charge localization rather than with ordering. At the CO transition for the commensurate doping x = 0.125 instead the extra-Drude peak hardens and a pseudogap opens in σ1(ω), approximately as wide as the maximum superconducting gap of LSCO.

S-wave Superconductivity due to Orbital and Spin fluctuations in Fe-pnictides: Self-Consistent Vertex Correction with Self-Energy (SC-VCΣ) Analysis

To understand the amazing variety of the superconducting states of Fe-based superconductors, we analyze the multiorbital Hubbard models for LaFeAsO and LiFeAs going beyond the random-phase approximation (RPA), by calculating the vertex correction (VC) and self-energy correction. Due to the spin+orbital mode coupling described by the VC, both orbital and spin fluctuations mutually develop, consistently with the experimental phase diagram with the orbital and magnetic orders. Due to both fluctuations, the s-wave gap function with sign-reversal ($s_{\pm}$-wave), without sign-reversal ($s_{++}$-wave), and nodal s-wave states are obtained, compatible with the experimental wide variety of the gap structure. Thus, the present theory provides a microscopic explanation of the normal and superconducting phase diagram based on the realistic Hubbard model.

Interband Quasiparticle Scattering in Superconducting LiFeAs Reconciles Photoemission and Tunneling Measurements

Several angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies reveal a poorly nested Fermi surface of LiFeAs, far away from a spin density wave instability, and clear-cut superconducting gap anisotropies. On the other hand a very different, more nested Fermi surface and dissimilar gap anisotropies have been obtained from quasiparticle interference (QPI) data, which were interpreted as arising from intraband scattering within hole-like bands. Here we show that this ARPES-QPI paradox is completely resolved by interband scattering between the hole-like bands. The resolution follows from an excellent agreement between experimental quasiparticle scattering data and T-matrix QPI calculations (based on experimental band structure data), which allows disentangling interband and intraband scattering processes.
