QCD phase structure at finite isospin chemical potential and smaller-than-physical quark mass

Introduction of a nonzero isospin chemical potential in QCD leads to the emergence of a pion condensed phase at sufficiently large $μ_I$, bounded by a second order transition line. At zero temperature the pion condensate appears at $μ_I = m_π/ 2$. Recent numerical studies at physical quark masses show that the pion condensation boundary remains vertical up to the meeting point with the chiral crossover line. If this result remains valid when the light quark mass (and the pion mass) goes to zero, then in the chiral limit at temperatures below the chiral transition pion condensation happens at arbitrary nonzero $μ_I$. We report on results of a lattice QCD simulation of a 2+1 flavour QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potential, at smaller-than-physical light quark mass, that support this scenario.

Flux tubes in QCD at finite temperature

We present results for the chromo-electric field generated by a static quark-antiquark pair at finite temperature, in lattice QCD with 2+1 dynamical staggered fermions at physical quark masses. We investigate the evolution of the field as the temperature increases through and beyond the chiral transition. For all the temperatures considered we find clear evidence of a chromo-magnetic current and of a longitudinal nonperturbative chromo-electric field that stays almost uniform along the flux tube. In the high-temperature region the magnitude of the flux-tube field is determined by an effective string tension that decreases exponentially as the temperature increases, while the flux-tube width decreases according to an inverse-temperature law. Our results suggest that beyond the chiral pseudocritical temperature the quark-antiquark system can be characterized by a screened string tension.

Renormalization group invariant mean-field model for QCD at finite isospin density

QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potentials has phenomenological relevance for a series of physical systems and provides an ideal testground for the modeling of dense strongly interacting matter. The two-flavor quark-meson model is known to effectively describe the condensation of charged pions in QCD that occurs in this setting. In this paper, we derive a renormalization-group invariant mean-field formulation of the model and demonstrate that the resulting phase diagram and equation of state are in quantitative agreement with data from lattice QCD simulations at small and intermediate isospin chemical potentials. In particular, the speed of sound from the model shows an excess over the conformal bound as previously seen in lattice computations in agreement with chiral perturbation theory. We then consider the speed of sound in the limit of large isospin chemical potentials and see that it approaches the conformal limit from above, in qualitative agreement with recent lattice results and in quantitative agreement with perturbation theory in the presence of a BCS gap. Finally, we consider the phase diagram in the approach to the chiral limit. We find that within the model the chiral phase transition connects to the pion condensation phase boundary in the chiral limit and we discuss the implications for the properties of the chiral transition point.

Condensation of lighter-than-physical pions in QCD

We report on the results of the 2+1 flavour QCD simulations at nonzero isospin chemical potential performed at half the physical light quark mass. At low temperatures and large isospin chemical potential Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) occurs, creating a pion condensed phase, separated from the hadronic and quark-gluon plasma phases by the BEC transition line. For physical quark masses, the section of this line between the hadronic and BEC phases was found to be almost perfectly vertical, i.e. aligned with the temperature axis. We show that for lighter than physical pions, this section remains vertical, and approaches the axis of vanishing chemical potential linearly with the pion mass, giving a prediction of the phase diagram in the chiral limit.

Investigating the flux tube structure within full QCD

A characteristic signature of quark confinement is the concentration of the chromoelectric field between a static quark-antiquark pair in a flux tube. Here we report on lattice measurements of field distributions on smeared Monte Carlo ensembles in QCD with (2+1) HISQ flavors. We measure the field distributions for several distances between static quark-antiquark sources, ranging from 0.6 fm up to the distance where the color string is expected to break.

Pion condensation at lower than physical quark masses

In QCD at large enough isospin chemical potential Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) takes place, separated from the normal phase by a phase transition. From previous studies the location of the BEC line at the physical point is known. In the chiral limit the condensation happens already at infinitesimally small isospin chemical potential for zero temperature according to chiral perturbation theory. The thermal chiral transition at zero density might then be affected, depending on the shape of the BEC boundary, by its proximity. As a first step towards the chiral limit, we perform simulations of 2+1 flavors QCD at half the physical quark masses. The position of the BEC transition is then extracted and compared with the results at physical masses.

The light Roberge-Weiss tricritical endpoint at imaginary isospin chemical potential

We discuss results for the Roberge Weiss (RW) phase transition at nonzero imaginary baryon and isospin chemical potentials, in the plane of temperature and quark masses. Our study focuses on the light tricritical endpoint which has already been used as a starting point for extrapolations aiming at the chiral limit at vanishing chemical potentials. In particular, we are interested in determining how imaginary isospin chemical potential shifts the tricritical mass with respect to earlier studies at zero imaginary isospin chemical potential. A positive shift might allow one to perform the chiral extrapolations from larger quark mass values, therefore making them less computationally expensive. We also present results for the dynamics of Polyakov loop clusters across the RW phase transition.

The light Roberge-Weiss tricritical endpoint at imaginary isospin and baryon chemical potential

Imaginary chemical potentials serve as a useful tool to constrain the QCD phase diagram and to gain insight into the thermodynamics of strongly interacting matter. In this study, we report on the first determination of the phase diagram for arbitrary imaginary baryon and isospin chemical potentials at high temperature using one-loop perturbation theory, revealing a nontrivial structure of Roberge-Weiss (RW) phase transitions in this plane. Subsequently, this system is simulated numerically with $N_{\rm f}=2$ unimproved staggered quarks on $N_τ=4$ lattices at a range of temperatures at one of the RW phase transitions. We establish a lower bound for the light quark mass, where the first-order transition line terminates in a tricritical point. It is found that this tricritical mass is increased as compared to the case of purely baryonic imaginary chemical potentials, indicating that our setup is more advantageous for identifying critical behavior towards the chiral limit. Finally, the dynamics of local Polyakov loop clusters is also studied in conjuction with the RW phase transition.

Dual Polyakov loop model at finite density: phase diagram and screening masses

We consider a dual representation of an effective three-dimensional Polyakov loop model for the SU(3) theory at nonzero real chemical potential. This representation is free of the sign problem and can be used for numeric Monte-Carlo simulations. These simulations allow us to locate the line of second order phase transitions, that separates the region of first order phase transition from the crossover one. The behavior of local observables in different phases of the model is studied numerically and compared with predictions of the mean-field analysis. Our dual formulation allows us to study also Polyakov loop correlation functions. From these results, we extract the screening masses and compare them with large-N predictions.

Dual simulation of a Polyakov loop model at finite baryon density: phase diagram and local observables

Many Polyakov loop models can be written in a dual formulation which is free of sign problem even when a non-vanishing baryon chemical potential is introduced in the action. Here, results of numerical simulations of a dual representation of one such effective Polyakov loop model at finite baryon density are presented. We compute various local observables such as energy density, baryon density, quark condensate and describe in details the phase diagram of the model. The regions of the first order phase transition and the crossover, as well as the line of the second order phase transition, are established. We also compute several correlation functions of the Polyakov loops.

We report on the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic fields generated by a static quark-antiquark pair at zero temperature in pure gauge SU(3). From the spatial structure of chromoelectric field we extract its nonperturbative part and discuss its properties.

BKT phase transitions in two-dimensional non-Abelian spin models

It is argued that two-dimensional U(N) spin models for any N undergo a BKT-like phase transition, similarly to the famous XY model. This conclusion follows from the Berezinskii-like calculation of the two-point correlation function in U(N) models, approximate renormalization group analysis and numerical investigations of the U(2) model. It is shown, via Monte Carlo simulations, that the universality class of the U(2) model coincides with that of the XY model. Moreover, preliminary numerical results point out that two-dimensional SU(N) spin models with the fundamental and adjoint terms and N>4 exhibit two phase transitions of BKT type, similarly to Z(N) vector models.

Deconfinement and universality in the 3D U(1) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature: study in the dual formulation

We study analytically and numerically the three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature in the dual formulation. For an appropriate disorder operator, we obtain the renormalization group equations describing the critical behavior of the model in the vicinity of the deconfinement phase transition. These equations are used to check the validity of the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture regarding the critical behavior of the lattice U(1) model. Furthermore, we perform numerical simulations of the model for $N_t = 1, 2, 4, 8$ and compute, by a cluster algorithm, the dual correlation functions and the corresponding second moment correlation length. In this way we locate the position of the critical point and calculate critical indices.

Critical behavior and continuum scaling of $3D$ $Z(N)$ lattice gauge theories

Three-dimensional $Z(N)$ lattice gauge theories are studied numerically at finite temperature for $N$ = 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 20 and for $N_t$=2,4,8. For each model the location of phase transitions and its critical indices are determined. The scaling of critical points with $N$ is proposed. The data obtained enable us to verify the scaling near the continuum limit for the $Z(N)$ models at finite temperatures.

Phase transitions in the three-dimensional Z(N) models

Phase transitions in zero-temperature 3D Z(N) lattice gauge theories are studied. We use a cluster algorithm defined for the dual formulation of the models. We also attempt to explain the nature of the intermediate continuously symmetric phase, which appears for N>5. The critical indices are calculated. The results obtained are used to study the scaling of critical points with N, as well as the scaling of finite-temperature critical points with the lattice size in the time direction, $N_t$.

Critical properties of 3D Z(N) lattice gauge theories at finite temperature

The phase structure of three-dimensional Z(N>4) lattice gauge theories at finite temperature is investigated. Using the dual formulation of the models and a cluster algorithm we locate the critical points of the two transitions, determine various critical indices and compute average action and specific heat. Results are consistent with two transitions of infinite order, belonging to the universality class of two-dimensional Z(N) vector spin models.
