Transition between radial and toroidal orders in a trimer-based magnetic metasurface

The change in the arrangement of magnetic dipole moments in a magnetic metasurface, due to the influence of an external static magnetic field, is discussed. Each meta-atom of the metasurface is composed of three identical disk-shaped resonators (trimer) made of magnetically saturated ferrite. To provide physical insight, full-wave numerical simulations of the near-fields and transmission characteristics of the metasurface are complemented by the theoretical description based on the multipole decomposition method. With these methods, the study of eigenmodes and scattering conditions of a single magnetic resonator, trimer, and their array forming the metasurface is performed. It is found that the magnetic dipole-based collective hybrid mode of the trimer can be gradually transformed from the radial (pseudomonopole) to azimuthal (toroidal) order and vice versa by varying the bias magnetic field strength. This is because the magnetic dipole moment of each individual disk constituting the trimer undergoes rotation as the bias magnetic field strength changes. This transition between two orders is accompanied by various patterns of localization of the electric field inside the meta-atoms. Due to the unique field configuration of these modes, the proposed metasurface can be considered for designing magnetic field sensors and nonreciprocal devices.

Trapped mode control in metasurfaces composed of particles with the form birefringence property

Progress in developing advanced photonic devices relies on introducing new materials, discovered physical principles, and optimal designs when constructing their components. Optical systems operating on the principles of excitation of extremely high-quality factor trapped modes (also known as the bound states in the continuum, BICs) are of great interest since they allow the implementation of laser and sensor devices with outstanding characteristics. In this paper, we discuss how one can utilize the anisotropic properties of novel materials (transition metal dichalcogenides, TMDs), particularly, the bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), to realize the excitation of trapped modes in dielectric metasurfaces. The bulk MoS2 is a thin-film structure in which the light wave behaves the same way as that in the uniaxial anisotropic material with the form birefringence property. Our metasurface is composed of an array of disk-shaped nanoparticles (resonators) made of the MoS2 material under the assumption that the anisotropy axis of MoS2 can be tilted to the rotation axis of the disks. We perform a detailed analysis of eigenwaves and scattering properties of such anisotropic resonators as well as the spectral features of the metasurface revealing dependence of the excitation conditions of the trapped mode on the anisotropy axis orientation of the MoS2 material used.

Magnetically induced topological transitions of hyperbolic dispersion in biaxial gyrotropic media

Magnetically induced topological transitions of isofrequency surfaces of bulk waves propagating through an unbounded biaxial gyrotropic medium are studied. The medium is constructed from a two-component superlattice composed of magnetized ferrite and semiconductor layers. To derive the constitutive parameters of the gyrotropic medium, a homogenization procedure from the effective medium theory is applied. The study is carried out in the frequency range near the frequency of ferromagnetic resonance, where the magnetic subsystem possesses the properties of natural hyperbolic dispersion. The topological transitions from an open type-I hyperboloid to several intricate hyperbolic-like forms are demonstrated for the extraordinary waves. We reveal how realistic material losses change the form of isofrequency surface characterizing hyperbolic dispersion. The obtained results broaden our knowledge on the possible topologies of isofrequency surfaces that can appear in gyrotropic media influenced by an external static magnetic field.

Superscattering from subwavelength corrugated cylinders

Wave scattering from a cylinder with a tensor impedance surface is investigated based on the Lorentz-Mie theory. A practical example of such a cylinder is a subwavelength metallic rod with helical dielectric-filled corrugations. The investigation is performed with the aim to maximize scattering cross-section by tailoring the surface impedance of cylindrical scatterers. For the normally incident TEz and TMz waves the required surface impedance of a subwavelength cylinder can be produced by longitudinal (axial) and transverse (circumferential) corrugations, respectively. It is shown that such corrugations induce superscattering at multiple frequencies, which can be widely tuned with either or both the size and permittivity of dielectric-filled corrugations. In the microwave band, this effect is demonstrated to be robust to material losses and is validated against the full-wave simulations and experiment. For the TEz waves the enhanced scattering from the cylinder is found to have a broad frequency bandwidth, provided that the relative permittivity of corrugations is low or equal unity. In the latter case, the corrugated cylinder acts as an all-metal superscatterer. For such cylinders the near-field measurements are implemented and provide the first experimental evidence of the superscattering phenomenon for all-metal objects. In addition to multifrequency superscattering, the dielectric-filled corrugations are shown to provide multifrequency cloaking of the cylinder under the incidence of the TMz waves. Simultaneous superscattering and cloaking at multiple frequencies distinguishes corrugated cylinders from other known practicable scatterers for potential applications in antenna designing, sensing, and energy harvesting.

Dual-polarized all-angle cloaking of a dielectric nanowire by helical graphene ribbons

Scattering from a dielectric nanowire coated by helical graphene strips (nanoribbons) is investigated for dual-polarized wave at oblique incidence. In the long-wavelength approximation, the helical strips are treated as a homogeneous layer with averaged tensor conductivity. It is shown that performance of well-known surface cloaks in the form of graphene monolayer, axial and azimuthal graphene strips can be deteriorated in a wide range of incidence angles. To overcome this problem, helical graphene strips are proposed as an advanced metasurface for dual-polarized all-angle cloaking of dielectric nanowire in the terahertz band. It is found that such metasurface suppresses scattering from nanowire more effectively as compared to graphene monolayer, regardless of the angle of wave incidence. Moreover, dual-polarized all-angle cloaking of dielectric nanowire can be broadly tuned in frequency with parameters of helical graphene strips.

Lossless and loss-induced topological transitions of isofrequency surfaces of a composite magnetic-semiconductor medium

Topological transitions of isofrequency surfaces of a composite magnetic-semiconductor structure influenced by an external static magnetic field are studied in the long-wavelength approximation. For the lossless case, the topological transitions of isofrequency surfaces from a closed ellipsoid to open Type I and Type II hyperboloids as well as a bi-hyperboloid are demonstrated. Conditions for critical points where the topological transitions occur are found out. It is revealed that actual material losses in the constituents of the composite medium strongly influence the dispersion behaviours for the extraordinary waves, which manifest themselves in the loss-induced topological transitions of isofrequency surfaces. It is shown that the loss-induced topological transitions from a Type I hyperboloid to a bi-hyperboloid appear in the frequency band where the real part of a particular principal component of the anisotropic constitutive parameter (permittivity or permeability tensor) is a near-zero value while its imaginary part is a non-zero value.

Multiple invisibility regions induced by symmetry breaking in a trimer of subwavelength graphene-coated nanowires

Electromagnetic response is studied for clusters of subwavelength graphene-coated nanowires illuminated by a linearly polarized plane wave in the terahertz frequency range. The solution of the scattering problem is obtained with the Lorenz-Mie theory and the multiple cylinder scattering formalism. The results show that normalized scattering cross-sections of nanowire clusters can be drastically changed by the symmetry breaking introduced into the cluster's design. This effect is due to excitation of dark modes and is observed only for the incident wave of TE-polarization.

Low-loss forward and backward surface plasmons in a semiconductor nanowire coated by helical graphene strips

In the long-wavelength approximation, the effective conductivity tensor is introduced for graphene ribbons (strips) placed periodically at the interface between two media. The resulting conducting surface is considered as a coating for semiconductor nanowire. For the hybrid waves of such nanowire the dispersion equations are obtained in explicit form. Two types of surface plasmons are found to exist: (i) the modified surface plasmons, which originate from the ordinary surface plasmons of a graphene-coated semiconductor nanowire, and (ii) the spoof plasmons, which arise on the array of graphene ribbons and may possess forward-wave and backward-wave dispersion. It is revealed that the spoof surface plasmons are low-loss ones, and their frequencies, field-confinement and group velocities can be tuned widely by adjusting the coil angle and width of helical graphene strips.

Dispersion features of complex waves in a graphene-coated semiconductor nanowire

Dispersion features of a graphene-coated semiconductor nanowire operating in the terahertz frequency band are consistently studied in the framework of a special theory of complex waves. Detailed classification of the waveguide modes was carried out based on the analysis of characteristics of the phase and attenuation constants obtained from the complex roots of characteristic equation. With such a treatment, the waves are attributed to the group of either 'proper' or 'improper' waves, wherein their type is determined as the trapped surface waves, fast and slow leaky waves, and surface plasmons. The dispersion curves of axially symmetric TM0n and TE0n modes, as well as non-symmetric hybrid EH1n and HE1n modes were plotted and analyzed in details, and both radiative regime of leaky waves and guided regime of trapped surface waves are identified. Peculiarities of propagation of the TM modes of surface plasmons were revealed. Two sub-regions of existence of surface plasmons were found out where they appear as propagating and reactive waves. The cut-off conditions for higher order modes were correctly determined.

Bi-hyperbolic isofrequency surface in a magnetic-semiconductor superlattice

The topology of isofrequency surfaces of a magnetic-semiconductor superlattice influenced by an external static magnetic field is studied. In particular, in the given structure, topology transitions from standard closed forms of spheres and ellipsoids to open ones of Type I and Type II hyperboloids as well as bi-hyperboloids were revealed and analyzed. In the latter case, it is found out that a complex of an ellipsoid and bi-hyperboloid in isofrequency surfaces appears as a simultaneous effect of both the ratio between magnetic and semiconductor filling factors and magnetic field influence. It is proposed to consider the obtained bi-hyperbolic isofrequency surface as a new topology class of the wave dispersion.

Control of single-mode operation in a circular waveguide filled by a longitudinally magnetized gyroelectromagnetic medium

A substantial control of dispersion features of the hybrid EH01 and HE11 modes of a circular waveguide which is completely filled by a longitudinally magnetized composite finely-stratified ferrite-semiconductor structure is discussed. A relation between the resonant conditions of such a composite gyroelectromagnetic filling of the circular waveguide and dispersion features of the supported modes are studied. Three distinct frequency bands with the single-mode operation under normal as well as anomalous dispersion conditions of the EH01 mode are identified by solving an optimization problem with respect to the filling factors of the composite medium. The possibility of achieving isolated propagation of the HE11 mode is revealed.

Modal phenomena of surface and bulk polaritons in magnetic-semiconductor superlattices

We discuss peculiarities of bulk and surface polaritons propagating in a composite magnetic-semiconductor superlattice influenced by an external static magnetic field. Three particular configurations of magnetization, namely the Voigt, polar and Faraday geometries are considered. In the long-wavelength limit, involving the effective medium theory, the proposed superlattice is described as an anisotropic uniform medium defined by the tensors of effective permittivity and effective permeability. The study is carried out in the frequency band where the characteristic resonant frequencies of the underlying constitutive magnetic and semiconductor materials of the superlattice are different but closely spaced. The effects of mode crossing and anti-crossing in dispersion characteristics of both bulk and surface polaritons are revealed and explained with an assistance of the concept of Morse critical points from the catastrophe theory.

Coexistence of bulk and surface polaritons in a~magnetic-semiconductor superlattice influenced by a transverse magnetic field

It is demonstrated that the effect of coexistence of bulk and surface polaritons within the same frequency band and wavevector space can be achieved in a magnetic-semiconductor superlattice providing a conscious choice of characteristic resonant frequencies and material fractions of the structure's underlying components as well as geometry of the external static magnetic field. The study is based on the effective medium theory which is involved to calculate dispersion characteristics of the long-wavelength electromagnetic modes of ordinary and extraordinary bulk polaritons and hybrid EH and HE surface polaritons derived via averaged expressions with respect to the effective constitutive parameters of the superlattice.

Crossing and anti-crossing effects of polaritons in a magnetic-semiconductor superlattice influenced by an external magnetic field

Crossing and anti-crossing effects in dispersion characteristics of both bulk and surface polaritons in a magnetic-semiconductor superlattice influenced by an external static magnetic field being in the Faraday geometry are discussed. The bulk polaritons are classified as eigenwaves with right-handed and left-handed elliptically polarized states, whereas the surface polaritons are considered as hybrid modes having a predominant effect of either magnetic or semiconductor subsystem, and distinctions in dispersion characteristics of such polaritons are revealed involving the concept of critical points.

Dispersion peculiarities of hybrid modes in a circular waveguide filled by a composite gyroelectromagnetic medium

Extraordinary dispersion features of a circular waveguide filled by a longitudinally magnetized composite gyroelectromagnetic medium are studied. The composite medium is considered to be constructed by juxtaposition together of magnetic and semiconductor layers providing all characteristic dimensions of the resulting multilayered system are much smaller than the wavelength in the corresponding part of the composite medium. The waveguide dispersion equation and its eigenmodes are derived. The mode classification is made in a standard manner so that the guided modes are sorted into a class of hybrid HE and EH waves in terms of their unique dispersion characteristics. The numerical results are obtained in the band near the frequencies of corresponding resonances in constitutive materials of the composite medium, and they show that the modes behaviors become to be quite diverse due to manifestation of a strong combined geometrical and material dispersion related to the waveguide parameters and gyroelectromagnetic filling, respectively.

Extraordinary dispersion features of both bulk and surface polaritons in a finely-stratified magnetic-semiconductor structure which is under an action of an external static magnetic field in the Voigt geometry are discussed in this letter. It is shown that the conditions for total overlapping dispersion regions of simultaneous existence of bulk and surface polaritons can be reached providing a conscious choice of the constitutive parameters and material fractions for both magnetic and semiconductor subsystems.

Dispersion blue-shift in an aperiodic Bragg reflection waveguide

A particular feature of an aperiodic design of cladding of Bragg reflection waveguides to demonstrate a dispersion blue-shift is elucidated. It is made on the basis of a comparative study of dispersion characteristics of both periodic and aperiodic configurations of Bragg mirrors in the waveguide system, wherein for the aperiodic configuration three procedures for layers alternating, namely Fibonacci, Thue-Morse and Kolakoski substitutional rules are considered. It was found out that, in a Bragg reflection waveguide with any considered aperiodic cladding, dispersion curves of guided modes appear to be shifted to shorter wavelengths compared to the periodic configuration regardless of the modes polarization.

Dispersion properties of a nanophotonic Bragg waveguide with finite aperiodic cladding

A comprehensive analysis of guided modes of a novel type of a planar Bragg reflection waveguide which consists of a low refractive index guiding layer sandwiched between two finite aperiodic mirrors is presented. The layers in the mirrors are aperiodically arranged according to the Kolakoski substitution rule. In such a waveguide light is confined inside the core by Bragg reflection from the mirrors, while dispersion characteristics of guided modes strongly depend on aperiodicity of the cladding. Using the transfer matrix formalism bandgap conditions, dispersion characteristics and mode profiles of the guided modes of such Bragg reflection waveguide are studied.
