Coarse nodal counts on sub-Riemannian manifolds

We study coarse topology of nodal sets of linear combinations of eigenfunctions of sub-Laplacians. More precisely, we prove coarse versions of Courant's and Bézout's theorems for linear combinations of eigenfunctions of sub-Laplacians on compact nilmanifolds obtained as quotients of stratified groups. We conjecture the extensions of these results to general closed equiregular sub-Riemannian manifolds and outline a programme for proving them. The method we use combines topological persistence and anisotropic Sobolev theory of Hörmander vector fields, generalizing the ideas which have recently been implemented in the Riemannian case.

On certain $C^0$-aspects of contactomorphism groups

We study a number of questions related to the $C^0$-topology of contactomorphisms and contact homeomorphisms. In particular, we show a connection between Rokhlin property of contact homeomorphisms and contact non-squeezing, we define a new conjugation-invariant norm on contactomorphisms and explore its relation to the contact fragmentation norm and we introduce a measure of the size of conjugacy classes which is related to weak conjugacy equivalence. We also show that Sandon's spectral norm is $C^0$-locally bounded and extend its definition to contact homeomorphisms.

Harmonic functions with highly intersecting zero sets

We show that the number of isolated zeros of a harmonic map $h:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}^2$ inside the ball of radius $r$ can grow arbitrarily fast with $r$, while its maximal modulus grows in a controlled manner. This result is an analogue, in the context of harmonic maps, of the celebrated Cornalba-Shiffman counterexamples to the transcendental Bézout problem.

Persistent transcendental Bézout theorems

An example of Cornalba and Shiffman from 1972 disproves in dimension two or higher a classical prediction that the count of zeros of holomorphic self-mappings of the complex linear space should be controlled by the maximum modulus function. We prove that such a bound holds for a modified coarse count inspired by the theory of persistence modules originating in topological data analysis.

Coarse nodal count and topological persistence

Courant's theorem implies that the number of nodal domains of a Laplace eigenfunction is controlled by the corresponding eigenvalue. Over the years, there have been various attempts to find an appropriate generalization of this statement in different directions. We propose a new take on this problem using ideas from topological data analysis. We show that if one counts the nodal domains in a coarse way, basically ignoring small oscillations, Courant's theorem extends to linear combinations of eigenfunctions, to their products, to other operators, and to higher topological invariants of nodal sets. We also obtain a coarse version of the Bézout estimate for common zeros of linear combinations of eigenfunctions. We show that our results are essentially sharp and that the coarse count is necessary, since these extensions fail in general for the standard count. Our approach combines multiscale polynomial approximation in Sobolev spaces with new results in the theory of persistence modules and barcodes.

Persistence modules, symplectic Banach-Mazur distance and Riemannian metrics

We use persistence modules and their corresponding barcodes to quantitatively distinguish between different fiberwise star-shaped domains in the cotangent bundle of a fixed manifold. The distance between two fiberwise star-shaped domains is measured by a non-linear version of the classical Banach-Mazur distance, called symplectic Banach-Mazur distance and denoted by $d_{SBM}.$ The relevant persistence modules come from filtered symplectic homology and are stable with respect to $d_{SBM}.$ Our main focus is on the space of unit codisc bundles of orientable surfaces of positive genus, equipped with Riemannian metrics. We consider some questions about large scale-geometry of this space and in particular we give a construction of a quasi-isometric embedding of $(\mathbb{R}^n,|\cdot |_\infty)$ into this space for all $n\in \mathbb{N}.$ On the other hand, in the case of domains in $T^*S^2$, we can show that the corresponding metric space has infinite diameter. Finally, we discuss the existence of closed geodesics whose energies can be controlled.

Persistence barcodes and Laplace eigenfunctions on surfaces

We obtain restrictions on the persistence barcodes of Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions and their linear combinations on compact surfaces with Riemannian metrics. Some applications to uniform approximation by linear combinations of Laplace eigenfunctions are also discussed.

Persistence modules with operators in Morse and Floer theory

We introduce a new notion of persistence modules endowed with operators. It encapsulates the additional structure on Floer-type persistence modules coming from the intersection product with classes in the ambient (quantum) homology, along with a few other geometric situations. We provide sample applications to the $C^0$-geometry of Morse functions and to Hofer's geometry of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, that go beyond spectral invariants and traditional persistent homology.
