4-manifold topology and collision rank of groups

We introduce collision rank and show that groups of finite collision rank are good in the sense of topological $4$-manifold theory. Finitely generated groups of collision rank two are shown to exist outside the class of subexponentially amenable groups. Such examples are given by commutator subgroups of topological full groups of Sturmian systems, and include continuum many pairwise nonisomorphic infinite simple amenable groups.

Corks for exotic diffeomorphisms

We prove a localization theorem for exotic diffeomorphisms, showing that every diffeomorphism of a compact simply-connected 4-manifold that is isotopic to the identity after stabilizing with one copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, is smoothly isotopic to a diffeomorphism that is supported on a contractible submanifold. For those that require more than one copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, we prove that the diffeomorphism can be isotoped to one that is supported in a submanifold homotopy equivalent to a wedge of 2-spheres, with null-homotopic inclusion map. We investigate the implications of these results by applying them to known exotic diffeomorphisms.

Pseudo-isotopies of simply connected 4-manifolds

Perron and Quinn gave independent proofs in 1986 that every topological pseudo-isotopy of a simply-connected, compact topological 4-manifold is isotopic to the identity. Another result of Quinn is that every smooth pseudo-isotopy of a simply-connected, compact, smooth 4-manifold is smoothly stably isotopic to the identity. From this he deduced that $π_4(\operatorname{TOP}(4)/\operatorname{O}(4)) =0$. A replacement criterion is used at a key juncture in Quinn's proofs, but the justification given for it is incorrect. We provide different arguments that bypass the replacement criterion, thus completing Quinn's proofs of both the topological and the stable smooth pseudo-isotopy theorems. We discuss the replacement criterion and state it as an open problem.

Cornered skein lasagna theory

We extend the skein lasagna theory of Morrison-Walker-Wedrich to 4-manifolds with corners and formulate gluing formulas for 4-manifolds with boundary and, more generally, with corners. As an application, we develop a categorical framework for a presentation of the skein lasagna module of trisected closed 4-manifolds. Further, we extend the theory to dimension two by introducing bicategories for closed oriented surfaces and proving a gluing formula for the categories associated with 3-manifolds with boundary.

An Extension of Khovanov Homology to Immersed Surface Cobordisms

We show that an oriented surface in $\mathbb{R}^4$ containing double point singularities induces a map between the Khovanov homology groups of its boundary links in a functorial way. As part of this work, the movie moves of Carter and Saito are extended to surfaces with double points.

A new approach to (3+1)-dimensional TQFTs via topological modular forms

In this paper, we present a construction toward a new type of TQFTs at the crossroads of low-dimensional topology, algebraic geometry, physics, and homotopy theory. It assigns TMF-modules to closed 3-manifolds and maps of TMF-modules to 4-dimensional cobordisms. This is a mathematical proposal for one of the simplest examples in a family of $π_*({\rm TMF})$-valued invariants of 4-manifolds which are expected to arise from 6-dimensional superconformal field theories. As part of the construction, we define TMF-modules associated with symmetric bilinear forms, using (spectral) derived algebraic geometry. The invariant of unimodular bilinear forms takes values in $π_*({\rm TMF})$, conjecturally generalizing the theta function of a lattice. We discuss gluing properties of the invariants. We also demonstrate some interesting physics applications of the TMF-modules such as distinguishing phases of quantum field theories in various dimensions.

A triple torsion linking form and 3-manifolds in $S^4$

Given a rational homology 3-sphere $M$, we introduce a triple linking form on $H_1(M; \mathbb{Z})$, defined when the classical torsion linking pairing of three homology classes vanishes pairwise. If $M$ is the boundary of a simply-connected 4-manifold $N$, the triple linking form can be computed in terms of the higher order intersection form on $N$, introduced by Matsumoto. We use these methods to formulate an embedding obstruction for rational homology spheres in $S^4$, extending a 1938 theorem of Hantzsche.

Filling links and spines in 3-manifolds

We introduce and study the notion of filling links in 3-manifolds: a link L is filling in M if for any 1-spine G of M which is disjoint from L, $π_1(G)$ injects into $π_1(M\smallsetminus L)$. A weaker "k-filling" version concerns injectivity modulo k-th term of the lower central series. For each k>1 we construct a k-filling link in the 3-torus. The proof relies on an extension of the Stallings theorem which may be of independent interest. We discuss notions related to "filling" links in 3-manifolds, and formulate several open problems. The appendix by C. Leininger and A. Reid establishes the existence of a filling hyperbolic link in any closed orientable 3-manifold with $π_1(M)$ of rank 2.

Spineless 5-manifolds and the deformation conjecture

We construct a compact PL 5-manifold $M$ (with boundary) which is homotopy equivalent to the wedge of eleven 2-spheres, $\vee^{}_{1 1}S^2$, which is "spineless", meaning $M$ is not the regular neighborhood of any 2-complex PL embedded in $M$. We formulate a related question about the existence of exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds which is of interest in relation to the deformation conjecture for 2-complexes, also known as the generalized Andrews-Curtis conjecture.

Thompson's group $F$, tangles, and link homology

We extend a construction of Jones to associate $(n, n)$-tangles with elements of Thompson's group $F$ and prove that it is asymptotically faithful as $n \to\infty$. Using this construction we show that the oriented Thompson group $\vec F$ admits a lax group action on a category of Khovanov's chain complexes.

On the universal pairing for 2-complexes

The universal pairing for manifolds was defined and shown to lack positivity in dimension 4 by Freedman et al. We prove an analogous result for 2-complexes, and also show that the universal pairing does not detect the difference between simple homotopy equivalence and 3-deformations. The question of whether these two equivalence relations are different for 2-complexes is the subject of the Andrews-Curtis conjecture. We also discuss the universal pairing for higher-dimensional complexes and show that it is not positive.

Embedding obstructions in ${\mathbb R}^d$ from the Goodwillie-Weiss calculus and Whitney disks

Given a finite CW complex $K$, we use a version of the Goodwillie-Weiss tower to formulate an obstruction theory for embedding $K$ into a Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$. For $2$-dimensional complexes in $\mathbb{R}^4$, a geometric analogue is also introduced, based on intersections of Whitney disks and more generally on the intersection theory of Whitney towers developed by Schneiderman and Teichner. We focus on the first obstruction beyond the classical embedding obstruction of van Kampen. In this case we show the two approaches lead to essentially the same obstruction. We also give another geometric interpretation of our obstruction, as a triple collinearity condition. Furthermore, we relate our obstruction to the Arnold class in the cohomology of configuration spaces. The obstructions are shown to be realized in a family of examples. Conjectures are formulated, relating higher versions of these homotopy-theoretic, geometric and cohomological theories.

Lattice cohomology and $q$-series invariants of $3$-manifolds

An invariant is introduced for negative definite plumbed $3$-manifolds equipped with a spin$^c$-structure. It unifies and extends two theories with rather different origins and structures. One theory is lattice cohomology, motivated by the study of normal surface singularities, known to be isomorphic to the Heegaard Floer homology for certain classes of plumbed 3-manifolds. Another specialization gives BPS $q$-series which satisfy some remarkable modularity properties and recover ${\rm SU}(2)$ quantum invariants of $3$-manifolds at roots of unity. In particular, our work gives rise to a $2$-variable refinement of the $\widehat Z$-invariant.

gl(2) foams and the Khovanov homotopy type

The Blanchet link homology theory is an oriented model of Khovanov homology, functorial over the integers with respect to link cobordisms. We formulate a stable homotopy refinement of the Blanchet theory, based on a comparison of the Blanchet and Khovanov chain complexes associated to link diagrams. The construction of the stable homotopy type relies on the signed Burnside category approach of Sarkar-Scaduto-Stoffregen.

Towards an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ action on the annular Khovanov spectrum

Given a link in the thickened annulus, its annular Khovanov homology carries an action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, which is natural with respect to annular link cobordisms. We consider the problem of lifting this action to the stable homotopy refinement of the annular homology. As part of this program, the actions of the standard generators of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ are lifted to maps of spectra. In particular, it follows that the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ action on homology commutes with the action of the Steenrod algebra. The main new technical ingredients developed in this paper, which may be of independent interest, concern certain types of cancellations in the cube of resolutions and the resulting more intricate structure of the moduli spaces in the framed flow category.

Stable homotopy refinement of quantum annular homology

We construct a stable homotopy refinement of quantum annular homology, a link homology theory introduced by Beliakova, Putyra and Wehrli. For each $r\geq 2$ we associate to an annular link $L$ a naive $\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant spectrum whose cohomology is isomorphic to the quantum annular homology of $L$ as modules over $\mathbb{Z}[\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z}]$. The construction relies on an equivariant version of the Burnside category approach of Lawson, Lipshitz and Sarkar. The quotient under the cyclic group action is shown to recover the stable homotopy refinement of annular Khovanov homology. We study spectrum level lifts of structural properties of quantum annular homology.

Universal Surgery Problems with Trivial Lagrangian

We study the effect of Nielsen moves and their geometric counterparts, handle slides, on good boundary links. A collection of links, universal for 4-dimensional surgery, is shown to admit Seifert surfaces with trivial Lagrangian. They are good boundary links, with Seifert matrices of a more general form than in known constructions of slice links. We show that a certain more restrictive condition on Seifert matrices is sufficient for proving the links are slice. We also give a correction of a Kirby calculus identity in \cite{FK2}, useful for constructing surgery kernels associated to link-slice problems.
