Lie and point symmetries of Nyzhnyk models

We consider a hierarchy of models that can be obtained from the original Nyzhnyk system by imposing conditions on parameters, introducing potentials or pseudopotentials, performing limiting processes with respect to a scaling parameter, applying differential substitutions and interpreting parts of independent and/or dependent variables as complex or real. Therefore, among the Nyzhnyk models, one can distinguish between symmetric and asymmetric, dispersive and dispersionless, standard and modified, as well as real, complex, mixed and specific models. One can also distinguish single partial differential equations or systems of such equations, as well as linear or nonlinear Lax representations in the dispersive or dispersionless cases, respectively. For each specified model, we compute the maximal Lie invariance pseudoalgebra and, in the symmetric case, find the point- and contact-symmetry pseudogroups using the megaideal-based version of the algebraic method. It is shown that relations between these pseudoalgebras and between these pseudogroups are induced by relations between the corresponding models. Defining (finite-dimensional) subalgebras are singled out in all these pseudoalgebras in the symmetric and specific cases. Based on the established correspondences between the dispersionless and dispersive models, we completely classify one- and two-dimensional subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance pseudoalgebra of the (dispersive symmetric potential) Nyzhnyk equation and one-dimensional subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance pseudoalgebra of its linear Lax representation.

Hidden symmetries, hidden conservation laws and exact solutions of dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation

Among Lie submodels of the (real symmetric potential) dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation, we single out a remarkable submodel as such that, despite being the only one, is associated with a family of in general inequivalent one-dimensional subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra of this equation, which are parameterized by an arbitrary function of the time variable. The large family of invariant solutions of the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation that are related to the above submodel is expressed in terms of an arbitrary function of the time variable and the double quadrature of the well-known (implicit) general solution of the inviscid Burgers equation with respect to a space-like submodel invariant variable. The singled out submodel possesses many other interesting properties. In particular, we show that it is Lie-remarkable, and its maximal Lie invariance algebra completely defines its point symmetry pseudogroup, which provides the second but simpler example of the latter phenomenon in literature. Moreover, only hidden Lie symmetries of the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation that are associated with this submodel are essential for finding its exact solutions. Using Lie reductions, we construct new families of exact solutions of the inviscid Burgers equation and the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation in closed or parametric form. We also exhaustively described generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and conservation laws of the submodel, which gives the corresponding nonlocal and hidden structures for the inviscid Burgers equation and the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation, respectively.

Admissible transformations and Lie symmetries of linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations

We revisit the results on admissible transformations between normal linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations with an arbitrary number of dependent variables under several appropriate gauges of the arbitrary elements parameterizing these systems. For each class from the constructed chain of nested gauged classes of such systems, we single out its singular subclass, which appears to consist of systems being similar to the elementary (free particle) system whereas the regular subclass is the complement of the singular one. This allows us to exhaustively describe the equivalence groupoids of the above classes as well as of their singular and regular subclasses. Applying various algebraic techniques, we establish principal properties of Lie symmetries of the systems under consideration and outline ways for completely classifying these symmetries. In particular, we compute the sharp lower and upper bounds for the dimensions of the maximal Lie invariance algebras possessed by systems from each of the above classes and subclasses. We also show how equivalence transformations and Lie symmetries can be used for reduction of order of such systems and their integration. As an illustrative example of using the theory developed, we solve the complete group classification problems for all these classes in the case of two dependent variables.

Lie reductions and exact solutions of dispersionless Nizhnik equation

We exhaustively classify the Lie reductions of the real dispersionless Nizhnik equation to partial differential equations in two independent variables and to ordinary differential equations. Lie and point symmetries of reduced equations are comprehensively studied, including the analysis of which of them correspond to hidden symmetries of the original equation. If necessary, associated Lie reductions of a nonlinear Lax representation of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation are carried out as well. As a result, we construct wide families of new invariant solutions of this equation in explicit form in terms of elementary, Lambert and hypergeometric functions as well as in parametric or implicit form. We show that Lie reductions to algebraic equations lead to no new solutions of this equation in addition to the constructed ones. Multiplicative separation of variables is used for illustrative construction of non-invariant solutions.

Point- and contact-symmetry pseudogroups of dispersionless Nizhnik equation

Applying an original megaideal-based version of the algebraic method, we compute the point-symmetry pseudogroup of the dispersionless (potential symmetric) Nizhnik equation. This is the first example of this kind in the literature, where there is no need to use the direct method for completing the computation. The analogous studies are also carried out for the corresponding nonlinear Lax representation and the dispersionless counterpart of the symmetric Nizhnik system. We also first apply the megaideal-based version of the algebraic method to find the contact-symmetry (pseudo)group of a partial differential equation. It is shown that the contact-symmetry pseudogroup of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation coincides with the first prolongation of its point-symmetry pseudogroup. We check whether the subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation that naturally arise in the course of the above computations define the diffeomorphisms stabilizing this algebra or its first prolongation. In addition, we construct all the third-order partial differential equations in three independent variables that admit the same Lie invariance algebra. We also find a set of geometric properties of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation that exhaustively defines it.

Realizations of Lie algebras on the line and the new group classification of (1+1)-dimensional generalized nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations

Essentially generalizing Lie's results, we prove that the contact equivalence groupoid of a class of (1+1)-dimensional generalized nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations is the first-order prolongation of its point equivalence groupoid, and then we carry out the complete group classification of this class. Since it is normalized, the algebraic method of group classification is naturally applied here. Using the specific structure of the equivalence group of the class, we essentially employ the classical Lie theorem on realizations of Lie algebras by vector fields on the line. This approach allows us to enhance previous results on Lie symmetries of equations from the class and substantially simplify the proof. After finding a number of integer characteristics of cases of Lie-symmetry extensions that are invariant under action of the equivalence group of the class under study, we exhaustively describe successive Lie-symmetry extensions within this class.

Parameter-dependent linear ordinary differential equations and topology of domains

The well-known solution theory for (systems of) linear ordinary differential equations undergoes significant changes when introducing an additional real parameter. Properties like the existence of fundamental sets of solutions or characterizations of such sets via nonvanishing Wronskians are sensitive to the topological properties of the underlying domain of the independent variable and the parameter. We give a complete characterization of the solvability of such parameter-dependent equations and systems in terms of topological properties of the domain. In addition, we also investigate this problem in the setting of Schwartz distributions.

Equivalence groupoids of classes of linear ordinary differential equations and their group classification

Admissible point transformations of classes of $r$th order linear ordinary differential equations (in particular, the whole class of such equations and its subclasses of equations in the rational form, the Laguerre-Forsyth form, the first and second Arnold forms) are exhaustively described. Using these results, the group classification of such equations is revisited within the algebraic approach in three different ways.

Simplest potential conservation laws of linear evolution equations

Every simplest potential conservation law of any (1+1)-dimensional linear evolution equation of even order proves induced by a local conservation law of the same equation. This claim is true also for linear simplest potential conservation laws of (1+1)-dimensional linear evolution equations of odd order, which are related to linear potential systems. We also derive an effective criterion for checking whether a quadratic conservation law of a simplest linear potential system is a purely potential conservation law of a (1+1)-dimensional linear evolution equation of odd order.

Realizations of Real Low-Dimensional Lie Algebras

Using a new powerful technique based on the notion of megaideal, we construct a complete set of inequivalent realizations of real Lie algebras of dimension no greater than four in vector fields on a space of an arbitrary (finite) number of variables. Our classification amends and essentially generalizes earlier works on the subject. Known results on classification of low-dimensional real Lie algebras, their automorphisms, differentiations, ideals, subalgebras and realizations are reviewed.

Symmetry, Equivalence and Integrable Classes of Abel Equations

We suggest an approach for description of integrable cases of the Abel equations. It is based on increasing of the order of equations up to the second one and using equivalence transformations for the corresponding second-order ordinary differential equations. The problem of linearizability of the equations under consideration is discussed.
