Dipole-Dipole Interactions of Floquet States

We formulate a Floquet-Markov Lindblad master equation for translationally cold two-level atoms driven by a strong monochromatic wave and coupled to a common electromagnetic bath. The resulting dipole-dipole interaction reproduces the anisotropic Heisenberg model.

Anisotropic fluorescence signals retarded dipole-dipole interactions in a thermal atomic cloud

We experimentally observe and theoretically explain anisotropic multiple quantum coherence signals in the fluorescence from dilute thermal potassium vapors, at room temperature and particle densities $\sim 10^8\ \rm{cm}^{-3}$. We identify the retarded part of the geometrically fully resolved inter-atomic, resonant dipole-dipole interaction as the crucial ingredient to theoretically reproduce all qualitative features of the experimental spectra.

Accurate Zernike-Corrected Phase Screens for Arbitrary Power Spectra

Wave propagation through random continuous media remains an important fundamental problem with applications ranging from remote sensing to quantum communication. Typically, such media are characterized by smooth refractive index fluctuations whose impact on the wave can be captured by the stochastic parabolic equation. The latter can be solved numerically by means of a split-step method, which replaces the continuous medium with a number of discrete phase screens derived from the medium's power spectrum. We introduce and benchmark highly accurate and efficient hybrid phase screens for arbitrary power spectra which are based on the combination of Zernike and Fourier phase screens.

Exploiting separation-dependent coherence to boost optical resolution

The problem of resolving point-like light sources not only serves as a benchmark for optical resolution but also holds various practical applications ranging from microscopy to astronomy. In this research, we aim to resolve two thermal sources sharing arbitrary mutual coherence using the spatial mode demultiplexing technique. Our analytical study includes scenarios where the coherence and the emission rate depend on the separation between the sources, and is not limited to the faint sources limit. We consider the fluorescence of two interacting dipoles to demonstrate that the dependence of emission characteristics on the parameter of interest can boost the sensitivity of the estimation and noticeably prolong the duration of information decay.

Universal crosstalk of twisted light in random media

Structured light offers wider bandwidths and higher security for communication. However, propagation through complex random media, such as the Earth's atmosphere, typically induces intermodal crosstalk. We show numerically and experimentally that coupling of photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is governed by a universal function of a single parameter -- the ratio between the random medium's and the beam's transverse correlation lengths, even in the regime of pronounced intensity fluctuations.

Highly-transmitting modes of light in dynamic atmospheric turbulence

We show that instantaneous spatial singular modes of light in a dynamically evolving, turbulent atmosphere offer significantly improved high-fidelity signal transmission as compared to standard encoding bases corrected by adaptive optics. Their enhanced stability in stronger turbulence is associated with a subdiffusive algebraic decay of the transmitted power with evolution time.

Theory of multiple quantum coherence signals in dilute thermal gases

Manifestations of dipole-dipole interactions in dilute thermal gases are difficult to sense because of strong inhomogeneous broadening. Recent experiments reported signatures of such interactions in fluorescence detection-based measurements of multiple quantum coherence (MQC) signals, with many characteristic features hitherto unexplained. We develop an original open quantum systems theory of MQC in dilute thermal gases, which allows us to resolve this conundrum. Our theory accounts for the vector character of the atomic dipoles as well as for driving laser pulses of arbitrary strength, includes the far-field coupling between the dipoles, which prevails in dilute ensembles, and effectively incorporates atomic motion via a disorder average. We show that collective decay processes -- which were ignored in previous treatments employing the electrostatic form of dipolar interactions -- play a key role in the emergence of MQC signals.

Rigorous derivation of the triple scattering signal from single-atom responses

We study coherent backscattering of intense laser light from three immobile two-level atoms using the master equation approach. The master equation is solved analytically, and the triple scattering spectrum is expressed in quadratures. We show that this solution can be obtained via a self-consistent combination of single-atom spectral responses, and is equivalent to the solution following from the diagrammatic pump-probe approach. We deduce the general expressions for single-atom building blocks which can be used in simulations of multiple inelastic scattering of laser light in the bulk atomic medium.

Double scattering of intense laser light by two atoms

This paper analyzes coherent backscattering of intense laser light by two randomly placed distant atoms. Starting from the general two-atom master equation, we analytically derive the elastic and inelastic background and interference components of the double scattering spectrum. By expressing the final results in terms of single-atom observables, the two-atom problem is shown to be equivalent to a description in terms of single atoms under bichromatic driving.

Spectrum of coherently backscattered light from two atoms

We present a detailed analytical and numerical analysis of the inelastic coherent backscattering spectrum of laser light incident on cold atoms. We identify frequency domains where the interference contribution can be positive \emph{as well as} negative -- or exhibits dispersive character. These distinctive features are explained by reciprocity arguments and dressed state two-photon scattering amplitudes.

Spectrum of coherent backscattering of light by two atoms

We study theoretically inelastic spectrum of coherent backscattering of laser light by two atoms. For an intense laser field, there are frequency domains of not only constructive but also destructive (self-)interference of the inelastic photons. We interpret the emergent spectral features using the dressed states and considering coherent backscattering as a kind of the pump-probe experiment.

Elastic vs. inelastic coherent backscattering of laser light by cold atoms: a master equation treatment

We give a detailed derivation of the master equation description of the coherent backscattering of laser light by cold atoms. In particular, our formalism accounts for the nonperturbative nonlinear response of the atoms when the injected intensity saturates the atomic transition. Explicit expressions are given for total and elastic backscattering intensities in the different polarization channels, for the simplest nontrivial multiple scattering scenario of intense laser light multiply scattering from two randomly placed atoms.
