Multidimensional compound Poisson approximations for symmetric distributions

Distribution of the sum of independent identically distributed symmetric lattice vectors is approximated by the accompanying compound Poisson law and the second-order Hipp-type signed compound Poisson measure. Bergström -type asymptotic expansion is constructed. The accuracy of approximation is estimated in the total variation metric and, in many cases, is of the order $O(n^{-1})$.

Asymptotics for the sum of three state Markov dependent random variables

The insurance model when the amount of claims depends on the state of the insured person (healthy, ill, or dead) and claims are connected in a Markov chain is investigated. The signed compound Poisson approximation is applied to the aggregate claims distribution after $n\in \mathbb {N}$ periods. The accuracy of order $O(n^{-1})$ and $O(n^{-1/2})$ is obtained for the local and uniform norms, respectively. In a particular case, the accuracy of estimates in total variation and non-uniform estimates are shown to be at least of order $O(n^{-1})$. The characteristic function method is used. The results can be applied to estimate the probable loss of an insurer to optimize an insurance premium.

On large deviations for sums of discrete m-dependent random variables

The ratio $P(S_n=x)/P(Z_n=x)$ is investigated for three cases: (a) when $S_n$ is a sum of 1-dependent non-negative integer-valued random variables (rvs), satisfying some moment conditions, and $Z_n$ is Poisson rv; (b) when $S_n$ is a statistic of 2-runs and $Z_n$ is negative binomial rv; and (c) when $S_n$ is statistic of $N(1,1)$-events and $Z_n$ is a binomial r.v. We also consider the approximation of $P(S_n\geqslant x)$ by Poisson distribution with parameter depending on $x$.

On closeness of two discrete weighted sums

The effect that weighted summands have on each other in approximations of $S=w_1S_1+w_2S_2+\cdots+w_NS_N$ is investigated. Here, $S_i$'s are sums of integer-valued random variables, and $w_i$ denote weights, $i=1,\dots,N$. Two cases are considered: the general case of independent random variables when their closeness is ensured by the matching of factorial moments and the case when the $S_i$ has the Markov Binomial distribution. The Kolmogorov metric is used to estimate the accuracy of approximation.

A Three-Parameter Binomial Approximation

We approximate the distribution of the sum of independent but not necessarily identically distributed Bernoulli random variables using a shifted binomial distribution where the three parameters (the number of trials, the probability of success, and the shift amount) are chosen to match up the first three moments of the two distributions. We give a bound on the approximation error in terms of the total variation metric using Stein's method. A numerical study is discussed that shows shifted binomial approximations typically are more accurate than Poisson or standard binomial approximations. The application of the approximation to solving a problem arising in Bayesian hierarchical modeling is also discussed.
