Transverse dynamics of charmed hadrons in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions

Transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ spectra and anisotropic flow distributions are studied for charmonia and charmed hadrons produced in Pb-Pb collisions and measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The investigations are performed within the framework of the Statistical Hadronization Model with the transverse dynamics evaluated using predictions from relativistic viscous hydrodynamics as implemented in the computer codes MUSIC and FluiduM. With this essentially parameter-free approach, mostly good agreement is obtained for $p_{\rm T}$ spectra in the range $p_{\rm T}$ $< 10$ GeV/c. The calculations suggest a hardening of the ${\rm J}/ψ$ $p_{\rm T}$ distribution for more central collisions while the data show the opposite trend. The observed wide distribution in $p_{\rm T}$ of anisotropic flow coefficients v$_2$ and v$_3$ for charmonia is also well reproduced, while their magnitude is generally somewhat over predicted. This finding may be connected to a difference in spatial distribution between light and charmed hadrons due to a different diffusion of light and heavy quarks in the hot fireball.

QCD challenges from pp to AA collisions -- 4th edition

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the fourth International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to AA, which took place in February 2023 in Padua, Italy. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field of high-energy heavy-ion physics and to stimulate the formulation of concrete suggestions for making progresses on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

The multiple-charm hierarchy in the statistical hadronization model

In relativistic nuclear collisions the production of hadrons with light (u,d,s) quarks is quantitatively described in the framework of the Statistical Hadronization Model (SHM). Charm quarks are dominantly produced in initial hard collisions but interact strongly in the hot fireball and thermalize. Therefore charmed hadrons can be incorporated into the SHM by treating charm quarks as 'impurities' with thermal distributions, while the total charm content of the fireball is fixed by the measured open charm cross section. We call this model SHMc and demonstrate that with SHMc the measured multiplicities of single charm hadrons in lead-lead collisions at LHC energies can be well described with the same thermal parameters as for (u,d,s) hadrons. Furthermore, transverse momentum distributions are computed in a blast-wave model, which includes the resonance decay kinematics. SHMc is extended to lighter collision systems down to oxygen-oxygen and includes doubly- and triply-charmed hadrons. We show predictions for production probabilities of such states exhibiting a characteristic and quite spectacular enhancement hierarchy.

Temperature and fluid velocity on the freeze-out surface from $π$, $K$, $p$ spectra in pp, p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions

We present a new approach to take into account resonance decays in the blast-wave model fits of identified hadron spectra. Thanks to pre-calculated decayed particle spectra, we are able to extract, in a matter of seconds, the multiplicity dependence of the single freeze-out temperature $T_{\rm fo}$, average fluid velocity $\left<β_{\rm T}\right>$, velocity exponent $n$, and the volume $dV/dy$ of an expanding fireball. In contrast to blast-wave fits without resonance feed-down, our approach results in a freeze-out temperature of $T_{\rm fo}\approx 150\,\text{MeV}$, which has only weak dependence on multiplicity and collision system. Finally, we discuss separate chemical and kinetic freeze-outs separated by partial chemical equilibrium.

Multiplicity dependence of light flavour hadron production at LHC energies in the strangeness canonical suppression picture

We present an analysis of data on light flavour hadron production as function of event multiplicity at LHC energies measured by the ALICE collaboration. The strangeness-canonical approach within the framework of the THERMUS statistical hadronisation model is used for a simultaneous description of pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions. The rapidity window dependence of the strangeness correlation volume is addressed and a value of $Δy = 1.33 \pm 0.28$ is found. With the exception of the $ϕ$-meson, an excellent description of the experimental data is found.

Multiplicity dependence of identified particle production in pp collisions with ALICE

The study of identified particle production as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) and event multiplicity in proton-proton (pp) collisions at different center-of-mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$) is a key tool for understanding similarities and differences between small and large collisions systems. We report on the production of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^{0}_{S}$, $p (\bar{p})$, $Λ(\barΛ)$, $Ξ^{\pm}$ and $Ω^{\pm}$ measured in pp collisions in a wide range of center-of-mass energies with ALICE. The multiplicity dependence of identified particle yields is presented for $\sqrt{s} = \textrm{7}$ and $13$ TeV and discussed in the context of the results obtained in proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions, unveiling remarkable and intriguing similarities. The production rates of strange hadrons are observed to increase more than those of non-strange particles, showing an enhancement pattern with multiplicity which does not depend on the collision energy. Even if the multiplicity dependence of spectral shapes can be qualitatively described by commonly-used Monte Carlo (MC) event generators, the evolution of integrated yield ratios is poorly described by these models.

New results related to QGP-like effects in small systems with ALICE

Results on the production of $π^{\pm}$, $\textrm{K}^{\pm}$, $\textrm{p}(\bar{\textrm{p}})$, $Λ(\barΛ)$, $Ξ^{-} \left(\barΞ^{+}\right)$ and $Ω^{-} \left(\barΩ^{+}\right)$ at midrapidity (${|y|<0.5}$) as a function of multiplicity in $\sqrt{s}~=~7~\textrm{TeV}$ pp collisions are reported. Transverse momentum distributions and integrated yields are compared to expectations from statistical hadronization models along with results from different colliding systems and center-of-mass energies. The evolution of spectral shapes with multiplicity show similar patterns to those seen in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. The $p_{\textrm{T}}$-integrated baryon yields relative to pions exhibit a significant strangeness-related enhancement in both pp and p-Pb collisions.

Universal scaling dependence of QCD energy loss from data driven studies

In this paper we study the energy loss of jets in the QGP via the nuclear modification factor $R_{\textrm{AA}}$ for unidentified particles at high $p_{\textrm{T}}$ ($\gtrsim 10 \textrm{GeV}/c$) in and out of the reaction plane of the collision. We argue that at such a high $p_{\textrm{T}}$ there are no genuine flow effects and, assuming that the energy loss is only sensitive to initial characteristics such as the density and geometry, find that $R_{\textrm{AA}}$ depends linearly on the (RMS) length extracted from Glauber simulations. Furthermore we observe that for different centrality classes the density dependence of the energy loss enters as the square root of the charged particle multiplicity normalized to the initial overlap area. The energy loss extracted for RHIC and LHC data from the $R_{\textrm{AA}}$ is found to exhibit a universal behavior.
