Energy exchanges in a damped Langevin-like system with two thermal baths and an athermal reservoir

We study a Langevin-like model which describes an inertial particle in a one-dimensional harmonic potential and subjected to two heat baths and one athermal environment. The thermal noises are white and Gaussian, and the temperatures of heat reservoirs are different. The athermal medium act through an external non-Gaussian noise of Poisson type. We calculate exactly the time-dependent cumulant-generating function of position and velocity of the particle, as well as an expression of this generating function for stationary states. We discuss the long-time behavior of first cumulants of the energy injected by the athermal reservoir and the heat exchanged with thermal baths. In particular, we find that the covariance of stochastic heat due to distinct thermal baths exhibits a complex dependence on properties of athermal noise.

Non-Markovianity, entropy production, and Jarzynski equality

We explore the role a non-Markovian memory kernel plays on information exchange and entropy production in the context of a external work protocol. The Jarzynski Equality is shown to hold for both the harmonic and the non-harmonic models. We observe the memory function acts as an information pump, recovering part of the information lost to the thermal reservoir as a consequence of the non-equilibrium work protocol. The pumping action occurs for both the harmonic and non-harmonic cases. Unexpectedly, we found that the harmonic model does not produce entropy, regardless of the work protocol. The presence of even a small amount of non-linearity recovers the more normal entropy producing behaviour, for out-of-equilibrium protocols.

Enabling quantum non-Markovian dynamics by injection of classical colored noise

The non-Markovian nature of quantum systems recently turned to be a key subject for investigations on open quantum system dynamics. Many studies, from its theoretical grounding to its usefulness as a resource for quantum information processing and experimental demonstrations, have been reported in the literature. Typically, in these studies, a structured reservoir is required to make non-Markovian dynamics to emerge. Here, we investigate the dynamics of a qubit interacting with a bosonic bath and under the injection of a classical stochastic colored noise. A canonical Lindblad-like master equation for the system is derived, using the stochastic wavefunction formalism. Then, the non-Markovianity of the evolution is witnessed using the Andersson, Cresser, Hall and Li measure. We evaluate the measure for three different noises and study the interplay between environment and noise pump necessary to generate quantum non-Markovianity, as well as the energy balance of the system. Finally, we discuss the possibility to experimentally implement the proposed model.

Exact Nonequilibrium Work Generating Function for a Small Classical System

We obtain the exact nonequilibrium work generating function (NEWGF), for a small system consisting of a massive Brownian particle connected to internal and external springs. The external work is provided to the system for a finite time interval. The Jarzynski equality (JE), obtained in this case directly from the NEWGF, is shown to be valid for the present model, in an exact way regardless of the rate of external work.

Critical scaling in standard biased random walks

The spatial coverage produced by a single discrete-time random walk, with asymmetric jump probability $p\neq 1/2$ and non-uniform steps, moving on an infinite one-dimensional lattice is investigated. Analytical calculations are complemented with Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, for appropriate step sizes, the model displays a critical phenomenon, at $p=p_c$. Its scaling properties as well as the main features of the fragmented coverage occurring in the vicinity of the critical point are shown. In particular, in the limit $p\to p_c$, the distribution of fragment lengths is scale-free, with nontrivial exponents. Moreover, the spatial distribution of cracks (unvisited sites) defines a fractal set over the spanned interval. Thus, from the perspective of the covered territory, a very rich critical phenomenology is revealed in a simple one-dimensional standard model.

Exact time-average distribution for a stationary non-Markovian massive Brownian particle coupled to two heat baths

Using a time-averaging technique we obtain exactly the probability distribution for position and velocity of a Brownian particle under the influence of two heat baths at different temperatures. These baths are expressed by a white noise term, representing the fast dynamics, and a colored noise term, representing the slow dynamics. Our exact solution scheme accounts for inertial effects, that are not present in approaches that assume the Brownian particle in the over-damped limit. We are also able to obtain the contribution associated with the fast noise that are usually neglected by other approaches.

Granular clustering self-consistent analysis for general coefficients of restitution

We study the equilibrium behavior of one-dimensional granular clusters and one-particle granular gases for a variety of velocity dependent coefficients of restitution $r$. We obtain equations describing of the long time behavior for the cluster's pressure, r.m.s. velocity and granular inter-spacing. We show that for extremely long times, clusters with velocity dependent coefficients of restitution are unstable and dissolve into homogeneous, quasi-elastic gases, but clusters with velocity independent $r$ are permanent. This is in accordance with hydrodynamic studies pointing to the transient nature of density instabilities for granular gases with velocity dependent $r$.

Brownian Dynamics, Time-averaging and Colored Noise

We propose a method to obtain the equilibrium distribution for positions and velocities of a one-dimensional particle via time-averaging and Laplace transformations. We apply it to the case of a damped harmonic oscillator in contact with a thermal bath. The present method allows us to treat, among other cases, a Gaussian noise function exponentially correlated in time, e.g., Gaussian colored noise. We obtain the exact equilibrium solution and study some of its properties.

Single-particle model for a granular ratchet

A simple model for a granular ratchet corresponding to a single grain bouncing off a vertically vibrating sawtooth-like base is studied. Depending on the vibration strength, the sawtooth roughness and the restitution coefficient, horizontal transport in both the preferred and unfavoured directions is observed. A phase diagram indicating the regions in parameter space where each of the three possible regimes (no current, normal current, and current reversal) occurs is presented.

Vortex-Line Phase Diagram for Anisotropic Superconductors

The zero temperature vortex phase diagram for uniaxial anisotropic superconductors placed in an external magnetic field tilted with respect to the axis of anisotropy is studied for parameters typical of BSCCO and YBCO. The exact Gibbs free energy in the London approximation, using a self-energy expression with an anisotropic core cutoff, is minimized numerically, assuming only that the equilibrium vortex state is a vortex-line-lattice with a single vortex line per primitive unit cell. The numerical method is based on simulated annealing and uses a fast convergent series to calculate the energy of interaction between vortex lines. A phase diagram with three distinct phases is reported and the phases are characterized in detail. New results for values of the applied field close to the lower critical field are reported.

A qualitative Langevin-like model for the coexistence of two distinct granular temperatures

In the present work, we study qualitatively the physics of granular temperature coexistence, for a mixture of two different species. Our model captures its essential aspects and this allows us to get insights on the physical mechanisms of distinct temperature coexistence, in a way which is not obscured by the complexities of kinetic theories or numerical simulations. Our simple model is consistent with limit situations where we should expect equality for the granular temperatures for the mixture.

Vortex Lines or Vortex-Line Chains at the Lower Critical Field in Anisotropic Superconductors?

The vortex state at the lower critical field, H_{c1}, in clean anisotropic superconductors placed in an external field tilted with respect to the axis of anisotropy (c-axis) is considered assuming two possible arrangements: dilute vortex-lines or dilute vortex-line chains. By minimizing the Gibbs free energies in the London limit for each possibility we obtain the corresponding lower critical fields as a function of the tilt angle. The equilibrium configuration at H_{c1} for a given tilt angle is identified with that for which H_{c1} is the smallest. We report results for parameter values typical of strong and moderate anisotropy. We find that for strong anisotropy vortex-line chains are favored for small tilt angles (< 7.9^o) and that at 7.9^o there is coexistence between this configuration and a vortex-line one. For moderate anisotropy we find that there is little difference between the vortex-line and the vortex-chain lower critical fields.

Density mismatch in thin diblock copolymer films

Thin films of diblock copolymer subject to gravitational field are simulated by means of a cell dynamical system model. The difference in density of the two sides of the molecule and the presence of the field causes the formation of lamellar patterns with orientation parallel to the confining walls even when they are neutral. The concentration profile of those films is analyzed in the weak segregation regime and a functional form for the profile is proposed.

Lamellae Stability in Confined Systems with Gravity

The microphase separation of a diblock copolymer melt confined by hard walls and in the presence of a gravitational field is simulated by means of a cell dynamical system model. It is found that the presence of hard walls normal to the gravitational field are key ingredients to the formation of well ordered lamellae in BCP melts. To this effect the currents in the directions normal and parallel to the field are calculated along the interface of a lamellar domain, showing that the formation of lamellae parallel to the hard boundaries and normal to the field correspond to the stable configuration. Also, it is found thet the field increases the interface width.
