Chemical Abundances of the Outer Halo Stars in the Milky Way

We present chemical abundances of 57 metal-poor stars that are likely constituents of the outer stellar halo in the Milky Way. Almost all of the sample stars have an orbit reaching a maximum vertical distance (Z_max) of >5 kpc above and below the Galactic plane. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra for the sample stars obtained with Subaru/HDS are used to derive chemical abundances of Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Y and Ba with an LTE abundance analysis code. The resulting abundance data are combined with those presented in literature that mostly targeted at smaller Z_max stars, and both data are used to investigate any systematic trends in detailed abundance patterns depending on their kinematics. It is shown that, in the metallicity range of -2<[Fe/H]<-1, the [Mg/Fe] ratios for the stars with Z_max>5 kpc are systematically lower (~0.1 dex) than those with smaller Z_max. This result of the lower [alpha/Fe] for the assumed outer halo stars is consistent with previous studies that found a signature of lower [alpha/Fe] ratios for stars with extreme kinematics. A distribution of the [Mg/Fe] ratios for the outer halo stars partly overlaps with that for stars belonging to the Milky Way dwarf satellites in the metallicity interval of -2<[Fe/H]<-1 and spans a range intermediate between the distributions for the inner halo stars and the stars belonging to the satellites. Our results confirm inhomogeneous nature of chemical abundances within the Milky Way stellar halo depending on kinematic properties of constituent stars as suggested by earlier studies. Possible implications for the formation of the Milky Way halo and its relevance to the suggested dual nature of the halo are discussed.

6Li/7Li estimates for metal-poor stars

The presence of the lithium-6 isotope in some metal-poor stars is a matter of surprise because of the high values observed. Non-standard models of Big Bang nucleosynthesis and pre-Galactic cosmic ray fusion and spallation have been proposed to explain these values. However, the observations of this light isotope are challenging which may make some detections disputable. The goal was to determine 6Li/7Li for a sample of metal-poor stars; three of them have been previously studied and the remaining two are new for this type of study. The purpose was to increase, if possible, the number of lithium-6 detections and to confirm previously published results. Spectra of the resonance doublet line of neutral lithium Li I 670.78nm were taken with the High Dispersion Spectrograph at the Subaru 8.2m-telescope for a sample of five metal-poor stars (-3.12 < [Fe/H] < -2.19). The contribution of lithium-6 to the total observed line profile was estimated from the 1D-LTE analysis of the line asymmetry. Observed asymmetries could be reproduced assuming isotopic abundance ratios 6Li/7Li of the order of: 0.004 for BD+26 3578, ~ 0.010 for BD+02 3375 and G 64-37, 0.025 for BD+20 3603 and 0.047 for BD-04 3208. We found that these results were very sensitive to several of the assumptions made in the analysis, in particular, the treatment of the residual structure in the analysed spectra. Our final estimates for the errors are respectively delta_6Li/7Li=+- 0.028, 0.029, 0.039, 0.025 and 0.039. The 6Li/7Li ratios for the sample are comparable to or even lower than these error values, so that detections of lithium-6 can not safely be claimed despite of the high resolving power (R ~ 95 000) and S/N (400-600).

Interpretation of CEMP(s) and CEMP(s + r) Stars with AGB Models

Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars play a fundamental role in the s-process nucleosynthesis during their thermal pulsing phase. The theoretical predictions obtained by AGB models at different masses, s-process efficiencies, dilution factors and initial r-enrichment, are compared with spectroscopic observations of Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor stars enriched in s-process elements, CEMP(s), collected from the literature. We discuss here five stars as example, CS 22880-074, CS 22942-019, CS 29526-110, HE 0202-2204, and LP 625-44. All these objects lie on the main-sequence or on the giant phase, clearly before the TP-AGB stage: the hypothesis of mass transfer from an AGB companion, would explain the observed s-process enhancement. CS 29526-110 and LP 625-44 are CEMP(s+r) objects, and are interpreted assuming that the molecular cloud, from which the binary system formed, was already enriched in r-process elements by SNII pollution. In several cases, the observed s-process distribution may be accounted for AGB models of different initial masses with proper 13C-pocket efficiency and dilution factor. Na (and Mg), produced via the neutron capture chain starting from 22Ne, may provide an indicator of the initial AGB mass.

Chemical Composition of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars in the Sextans Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

Chemical abundances of six extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.5) stars in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy are determined based on high resolution spectroscopy (R=40,000) with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. (1) The Fe abundances derived from the high resolution spectra are in good agreement with the metallicity estimated from the Ca triplet lines in low resolution spectra. The lack of stars with [Fe/H]=<-3 in Sextans, found by previous estimates from the Ca triplet, is confirmed by our measurements, although we note that high resolution spectroscopy for a larger sample of stars will be necessary to estimate the true fraction of stars with such low metallicity. (2) While one object shows an overabundance of Mg (similar to Galactic halo stars), the Mg/Fe ratios of the remaining five stars are similar to the solar value. This is the first time that low Mg/Fe ratios at such low metallicities have been found in a dwarf spheroidal galaxy. No evidence for over-abundances of Ca and Ti are found in these five stars, though the measurements for these elements are less certain. Possible mechanisms to produce low Mg/Fe ratios, with respect to that of Galactic halo stars, are discussed. (3) Ba is under-abundant in four objects, while the remaining two stars exhibit large and moderate excesses of this element. The abundance distribution of Ba in this galaxy is similar to that in the Galactic halo, indicating that the enrichment of heavy elements, probably by the r-process, started at metallicities [Fe/H] < -2.5, as found in the Galactic halo.

HE 1327-2326, an unevolved star with [Fe/H] < -5.0 III. Does Its Atmosphere Reflect Its Natal Composition?

Based on spectroscopic constraints derived from NLTE line formation, we explore the likely range of stellar parameters (T_eff and log g) for the hyper-metal-poor (HMP) star HE 1327-2326. Combining the constraints from Balmer line profiles and the Ca I/II ionization equilibrium, a subgiant stage of evolution is indicated. This result is further supported by spectrophotometric observations of the Balmer jump. If a higher T_eff value was used (as favoured by some photometric calibrations), the spectroscopic analysis would indicate a turnoff-point stage of evolution. Using a stellar-structure code that treats the effects of atomic diffusion throughout the star in detail, we evolve a low-mass model star to reach the HR-diagram position of HE 1327-2326 after roughly 13 Gyr. While the surface abundances are modified significantly (by more than 1 dex for the case of uninhibited diffusion), such corrections can not resolve the discrepancy between the abundance inferred from the non-detection of the Li I resonance line at 6707 Angstroem and the WMAP-based primordial lithium abundance. As there are numerous processes that can destroy lithium, any cosmological interpretation of a lower-than-expected lithium abundance at the lowest metallicities will have to await sample sizes of unevolved hyper-metal-poor stars that are one order of magnitude larger. The situation remains equally inconclusive concerning atomic-diffusion corrections. Here, attempts have to be made to better constrain internal mixing processes, both observationally and by means of sophisticated modelling. With constraints on additional mixing processes taken from a recent globular-cluster study, the likeliest scenario is that HE 1327-2326's surface abundances have undergone mild depletion (of order 0.2 dex).

Non-LTE line formation for heavy elements in four very metal-poor stars

Stellar parameters and abundances of Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Eu are determined for four very metal-poor stars (-2.66 < [Fe/H] < -2.15) based on non-LTE line formation and analysis of high-resolution (R ~60000 and 90000) high signal-to-noise (S/N > 200) observed spectra. A model atom for H I is presented. An effective temperature was obtained from the Balmer Halpha and Hbeta line wing fits, the surface gravity from the Hipparcos parallax if available and the non-LTE ionization balance between Ca I and Ca II. Based on the hyperfine structure affecting the Ba II resonance line, the fractional abundance of the odd isotopes of Ba was derived for HD 84937 and HD 122563 from a requirement that Ba abundances from the resonance line and subordinate lines of Ba II must be equal. For each star, non-LTE leads to a consistency of Teff from two Balmer lines and to a higher temperature compared to the LTE case, by up to 60 K. Non-LTE effects are important in spectroscopic determination of surface gravity from Ca I/Ca II. For each star with a known trigonometric gravity, non-LTE abundances from the lines of two ionization stages agree within the error bars, while a difference in the LTE abundances consists of 0.23 dex to 0.40 dex for different stars. Departures from LTE are found to be significant for the investigated atoms, and they strongly depend on stellar parameters. For HD 84937, the Eu/Ba ratio is consistent with the relative solar system r-process abundances, and the fraction of the odd isotopes of Ba, f_odd, equals 0.43+-0.14. The latter can serve as a constraint on r-process models. The lower Eu/Ba ratio and f_odd = 0.22+-0.15 found for HD 122563 suggest that the s-process or the unknown process has contributed significantly to the Ba abundance in this star.

The SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline. III. Comparison with High-Resolution Spectroscopy of SDSS/SEGUE Field Stars

We report high-resolution spectroscopy of 125 field stars previously observed as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and its program for Galactic studies, the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). These spectra are used to measure radial velocities and to derive atmospheric parameters, which we compare with those reported by the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP). The SSPP obtains estimates of these quantities based on SDSS ugriz photometry and low-resolution (R = 2000) spectroscopy. For F- and G-type stars observed with high signal-to-noise ratios (S/N), we empirically determine the typical random uncertainties in the radial velocities, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities delivered by the SSPP to be 2.4 km/s, 130 K (2.2%), 0.21 dex, and 0.11 dex, respectively, with systematic uncertainties of a similar magnitude in the effective temperatures and metallicities. We estimate random errors for lower S/N spectra based on numerical simulations.

Neutron-capture elements in the very metal-poor star HD122563

We obtained high resolution, high S/N spectroscopy for the very metal-poor star HD122563 with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. Previous studies have shown that this object has excesses of light neutron-capture elements, while its abundances of heavy ones are very low. In our spectrum covering 3070 - 4780 A of this object, 19 neutron-capture elements have been detected, including seven for the first time in this star (Nb, Mo, Ru, Pd, Ag, Pr, and Sm). Upper limits are given for five other elements including Th. The abundance pattern shows a gradually decreasing trend, as a function of atomic number, from Sr to Yb, which is quite different from those in stars with excesses of r-process elements. This abundance pattern of neutron-capture elements provides new strong constraints on the models of nucleosynthesis responsible for the very metal-poor stars with excesses of light neutron-capture elements but without enhancement of heavy ones.

Afterglow spectrum of a gamma-ray burst with the highest known redshift z=6.295

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows have been proposed as an excellent probe to study the evolution of cosmic star formation, the reionization of the intergalactic medium, and the metal enrichment history of the universe, since the prompt gamma-ray emission of GRBs should be detectable out to distances z>10. Hitherto, the highest measured redshift for a GRB has been z=4.50. Here we report the optical spectrum of the afterglow of GRB 050904 obtained 3.4 days after the burst. The spectrum shows a clear continuum at the long wavelength end of the spectrum with a sharp cutoff at around 9000 A due to Ly alpha absorption at a redshift of 6.3 with a damping wing. Little flux is present in the waveband shortward of the Ly alpha break. A system of absorption lines of heavy elements at redshift z=6.295 +- 0.002 were also detected, yielding a precise measurement of the largest known redshift of a GRB. Analysis of the Si II fine structure lines suggest a dense metal-enriched environment around the GRB progenitor, providing unique information on the properties of the gas in a galaxy when the universe was younger than one billion years.

The new record holder for the most iron-poor star: HE 1327-2326, a dwarf or subgiant with [Fe/H]=-5.4

We describe the discovery of HE 1327-2326, a dwarf or subgiant with [Fe/H]}=-5.4. The star was found in a sample of bright metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. Its abundance pattern is characterized by very high C and N abundances. The detection of Sr which is overabundant by a factor of 10 as compared to iron and the Sun, suggests that neutron-capture elements had already been produced in the very early Galaxy. A puzzling Li depletion is observed in this unevolved star which contradicts the value of the primordial Li derived from WMAP and other Li studies. Possible scenarios for the origin of the abundance pattern (Pop. II or Pop. III) are presented as well as an outlook on future observations.

The Origins of Two Classes of Carbon-Enhanced, Metal-Poor Stars

We have compiled composition, luminosity, and binarity information for carbon-enhanced, metal-poor (CEMP) stars reported by recent studies. We divided the CEMP star sample into two classes, having high and low abundances, respectively, of the s-process elements, and consider the abundances of several isotopes, in particular 12C, 13C, and 14N, as well as the likely evolutionary stages of each star. Despite the fact that objects in both groups were selected from the same surveys (primarily the HK survey), without a-priori knowledge of their s-process element abundances, we identify the following remarkable difference between the two classes: s-element-rich CEMP (CEMP-s) stars occupy a wide range of evolutionary states, but do not have a strongly evolved 13C/14N ratio, whereas s-element-normal CEMP stars (CEMP-no) are found only high up the first-ascent giant branch, and possess 13C/14N ratios approaching the CN-cycle equilibrium value. Based on these observational facts, we discuss scenarios of formation of CEMP stars.

Subaru/HDS Abundances in Three Giant Stars in the Ursa Minor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

With the HDS (High Dispersion Spectrograph) on the Subaru telescope, we obtained high resolution optical region spectra of three red giant stars (cos 4, cos 82, and cos 347) in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheriodal galaxy. Chemical abundances in these stars have been analysed for 26 elements including alpha-, iron-peak, and neutron capture elements. All three stars show low abundances of alpha-elements (Mg, Si, and Ca) and two stars (cos 82 and cos 347) show high abundance of Mn compared to Galactic halo stars of similar metallicity. One star (cos 4) has been confirmed to be very metal deficient ([Fe/H]=-2.7) and found to show anomalously low abundances of Mn, Cu, and Ba. In another star cos 82 ([Fe/H]=-1.5), we have found large excess of heavy neutron-capture elements with the general abundance pattern similar to the scaled solar system r-process abundance curve. These observational results are rather puzzling: low abundances of alpha-elements and high abundance of Mn seem to sugggest a significant contribution of SNe Ia at low metallicity, while there is no hint of s-process (i.e., AGB stars) contribution even at [Fe/H]=-1.5, suggesting a peculiar nucleosynthetic history of the UMi dSph galaxy.

Chemical composition of UV-bright star ZNG 4 in the globular cluster M13

We present a detailed model-atmosphere analysis of ZNG 4, a UV-bright star in the globular cluster M13. From the analysis of a high resolution ($ R \approx 45,000 $) spectrum of the object, we derive the atmospheric parameters to be $\rm T_{eff} = 8500\pm 250$ K, log g $=$ 2.5 $\pm$ 0.5 and $\rm [Fe/H]= -1.5$. Except for magnesium, chromium and strontium, all other even Z elements are enhanced with titanium and calcium being overabundant by a factor of 0.8 dex. Sodium is enhanced by a factor of 0.2 dex. The luminosity of ZNG 4 and its position in the color-magnitude diagram of the cluster indicate that it is a Supra Horizontal Branch (SHB) (post-HB) star. The underabundance of He and overabundances of Ca, Ti, Sc and Ba in the photosphere of ZNG 4 indicate that diffusion and radiative levitation of elements may be in operation in M 13 post-HB stars even at $\rm T_{eff}$ of 8500K. Detailed and more accurate abundance analysis of post-HB stars in several globular clusters is needed to further understand their abundance anomalies.

Spectroscopic Studies of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars with Subaru/HDS:I. Observational Data

We have obtained high-resolution (R $\simeq$ 50,000 or 90,000), high-quality (S/N $\ga$ 100) spectra of 22 very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $\la$ -2.5) with the High Dispersion Spectrograph fabricated for the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. The spectra cover the wavelength range from 3500 to 5100 Å; equivalent widths are measured for isolated lines of numerous elemental species, including the $α$ elements, the iron-peak elements, and the light and heavy neutron-capture elements. Errors in the measurements and comparisons with previous studies are discussed. These data will be used to perform detailed abundance analyses in the following papers of this series. Radial velocities are also reported, and are compared with previous studies. At least one moderately r-process-enhanced metal-poor star, HD 186478, exhibits evidence of a small-amplitude radial velocity variation, confirming the binary status noted previously. During the course of this initial program, we have discovered a new moderately r-process-enhanced, very metal-poor star, CS 30306-132 ([Fe/H] $= -2.4$; [Eu/Fe] $= +0.85$), which is discussed in detail in the companion paper.

Spectroscopic Studies of Extremly Metal-Poor Stars with Subaru/HDS:II.The r-process Elements, Including Thorium

We present the abundance analyses for the neutron-capture elements, and discuss the observed abundance distributions in very metal-poor stars with excesses of r-process elements. As has been found by previous abundance studies, the star-to-star scatter in the abundances of neutron-capture elements are very large. The abundance patterns of the heavy neutron-capture elements (56 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 70) in seven objects with moderate to large excesses of the neutron-capture elements are similar to that of the solar system r-process component. These results strongly suggest that the heavy neutron-capture elements in these objects are primarily synthesized by the r-process. On the other hand, the abundance ratios of the light neutron-capture elements (38 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 46) exhibit a rather large dispersion. Our inspection of the correlation between Sr and Ba abundances in very metal-poor stars reveals that the dispersion of the Sr abundances clearly decreases with increasing Ba abundance. This results support previous suggestions that the light neutron-capture elements are likely to have been produced in different astrophysical sites from those associated with the production of the heavier ones. The Th/Eu abundance ratios (log(Th/Eu)) measured for the seven r-process-enhanced stars range from -0.10 to -0.59. Since these very metal-poor stars are believed to be formed in the early Galaxy, this result means that a small dispersion appears in the abundance ratios between Th and rare-earth elements, such as Eu, in very metal-poor stars. In order to apply the Th/Eu ratios to estimates of stellar ages, further understanding for the Th production by the r-process nucleosynthesis is required.

On The Spectrum and Spectropolarimetry of Type Ic Hypernova SN 2003dh/GRB 030329

Spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations of SN 2003dh/GRB 030329 obtained in 2003 May using the Subaru 8.2 m telescope are presented. The properties of the SN are investigated through a comparison with spectra of the Type Ic hypernovae SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. (Hypernovae being a tentatively defined class of SNe with very broad absorption features: these features suggest a large velocity of the ejected material and possibly a large explosion kinetic energy.) Comparison with spectra of other hypernovae shows that the spectrum of SN 2003dh obtained on 2003 May 8 and 9, i.e., 34-35 rest-frame days after the GRB (for z=0.1685), are similar to those of SN 1997ef obtained ~34-42 days after the fiducial time of explosion of that SN. The match with SN 1998bw spectra is not as good (at rest 7300-8000 A, but again spectra obtained ~33-43 days after GRB 980425 are preferred. This indicates that the SN may have intermediate properties between SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. Based on the analogy with the other hypernovae, the time of explosion of SN 2003dh is then constrained to be between -8 and +2 days of the GRB. The Si and O P-Cygni lines of SN 2003dh seem comparable to those of SN 1997ef, which suggests that the ejected mass in SN 2003dh may match that in SN 1997ef. Polarization was marginally detected at optical wavelengths. This is consistent with measurements of the late afterglow, implying that it mostly originated in the interstellar medium of the host galaxy.

Measurement of the Europium Isotope Ratio for the Extremely Metal-Poor, r-Process-Enhanced Star CS31082-001

We report the first measurement of the isotope fraction of europium (151Eu and 153Eu) for the extremely metal-poor, r-process-enhanced star CS31082-001, based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. We have also obtained new measurements of this ratio for two similar stars with previous europium isotope measurements, CS22892-052 and HD115444. The measurements were made using observations of the Eu lines in these spectra that are most significantly affected by isotope shifts and hyperfine splitting. The fractions of 151Eu derived for CS31082-001, CS22892-052, and HD115444 are 0.44, 0.51, and 0.46, respectively, with uncertainties of about +/-0.1. CS31082-001, the first star with a meaningful measurement of U outside of the solar system, is known to exhibit peculiar abundance ratios between the actinide and rare-earth elements (e.g., Th/Eu), ratios that are significantly different from those for other stars with large excesses of r-process elements, such as our two comparison objects. Nevertheless, our analysis indicates that the Eu isotope ratio of CS31082-001 agrees, within the errors, with those of other r-process-enhanced objects, and with that of solar-system material.
