Fast generation of Schrödinger cat states in a Kerr-tunable superconducting resonator

Schrödinger cat states, quantum superpositions of macroscopically distinct classical states, are an important resource for quantum communication, quantum metrology and quantum computation. Especially, cat states in a phase space protected against phase-flip errors can be used as a logical qubit. However, cat states, normally generated in three-dimensional cavities, are facing the challenges of scalability and controllability. Here, we present a novel strategy to generate and store cat states in a coplanar superconducting circuit by the fast modulation of Kerr nonlinearity. At the Kerr-free work point, our cat states are passively preserved due to the vanishing Kerr effect. We are able to prepare a 2-component cat state in our chip-based device with a fidelity reaching 89.1% under a 96 ns gate time. Our scheme shows an excellent route to constructing a chip-based bosonic quantum processor.

Simultaneous Nodal Superconductivity and Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CaPtAs

By employing a series of experimental techniques, we provide clear evidence that CaPtAs represents a rare example of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor which simultaneously exhibits nodes in the superconducting gap and broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in its superconducting state (below $T_c$ $\approx$ 1.5 K). Unlike in fully-gapped superconductors, the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ does not saturate at low temperatures, but instead it shows a $T^2$-dependence, characteristic of gap nodes. Both the superfluid density and the electronic specific heat are best described by a two-gap model comprising of a nodeless gap and a gap with nodes, rather than by single-band models. At the same time, zero-field muon-spin spectra exhibit increased relaxation rates below the onset of superconductivity, implying that TRS is broken in the superconducting state of CaPtAs, hence indicating its unconventional nature. Our observations suggest CaPtAs to be a new remarkable material which links two apparently disparate classes, that of TRS-breaking correlated magnetic superconductors with nodal gaps and the weakly-correlated noncentrosymmetric superconductors with broken TRS, normally exhibiting only a fully-gapped behavior.

CaPtAs: a new noncentrosymmetric superconductor

We report the discovery of a new noncentrosymmetric superconductor CaPtAs. It crystallizes in a tetragonal structure (space group $I4_1md$, No.109), featuring three dimensional honeycomb networks of Pt-As and a much elongated $c$-axis ($a = b = 4.18 $ Å, and $c = 43.70 $ Å). The superconductivity of CaPtAs with $T_c$ = 1.47 K was characterized by means of electrical resistivity, specific heat, and ac magnetic susceptibility. The electronic specific heat $C_\mathrm{e}(T)/T$ shows evidence for a deviation from the behavior of a conventional BCS superconductor, and can be reasonably fitted by a $p$-wave model. The upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}$ of CaPtAs exhibits a relatively large anisotropy, with an in-plane value of around 204 mT and an out-of-plane value of 148 mT. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Pt-5$d$ and As-4$p$ orbitals mainly contribute to the density of states near the Fermi level, showing that the Pt-As honeycomb networks may significantly influence the superconducting properties.

Evidence for triplet superconductivity near an antiferromagnetic instability in CrAs

Superconductivity was recently observed in CrAs as the helimagnetic order is suppressed by applying pressure, suggesting possible unconventional superconductivity. To reveal the nature of the superconducting order parameter of CrAs, here we report the angular dependence of the upper critical field under pressure. Upon rotating the field by 360 degrees in the $bc$-plane, six maxima are observed in the upper critical field, where the oscillations have both six-fold and two-fold symmetric components. Our analysis suggests the presence of an unconventional odd-parity spin triplet state.

Fully-gapped superconductivity in single crystals of noncentrosymmetric Re$_6$Zr with broken time-reversal symmetry

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re$_6$Zr has attracted much interest due to the observation of broken time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. Here we report an investigation of the superconducting gap structure of Re$_6$Zr single crystals by measuring the magnetic penetration depth shift $Δλ(T)$ and electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$. $Δλ(T)$ exhibits an exponential temperature dependence behavior for $T~\ll~T_c$, which indicates a fully-open superconducting gap. Our analysis shows that a single gap $s$-wave model is sufficient to describe both the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$ and $C_e(T)$ results, with a fitted gap magnitude larger than the weak coupling BCS value, providing evidence for fully-gapped superconductivity in Re$_6$Zr with moderate coupling.

Fully gapped $d$-wave superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$

The nature of the pairing symmetry of the first heavy fermion superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has recently become the subject of controversy. While CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ was generally believed to be a $d$-wave superconductor, recent low temperature specific heat measurements showed evidence for fully gapped superconductivity, contrary to the nodal behavior inferred from earlier results. Here we report London penetration depth measurements, which also reveal fully gapped behavior at very low temperatures. To explain these seemingly conflicting results, we propose a fully gapped $d+d$ band-mixing pairing state for CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, which yields very good fits to both the superfluid density and specific heat, as well as accounting for a sign change of the superconducting order parameter, as previously concluded from inelastic neutron scattering results.

Nodeless superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re24Ti5

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re$_{24}$Ti$_{5}$, a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking candidate with $T_c = 6$\,K, was studied by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) techniques. At a macroscopic level, its bulk superconductivity was investigated via electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The low-temperature penetration depth, superfluid density and electronic heat capacity all evidence an $s$-wave coupling with an enhanced superconducting gap. The spontaneous magnetic fields revealed by zero-field $μ$SR below $T_c$ indicate a time-reversal symmetry breaking and thus the unconventional nature of superconductivity in Re$_{24}$Ti$_{5}$. The concomitant occurrence of TRS breaking also in the isostructural Re$_6$(Zr,Hf) compounds, hints at its common origin in this superconducting family and that an enhanced spin-orbital coupling does not affect pairing symmetry.

Evidence for nodal superconductivity in a layered compound Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$

We report an investigation of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ on single crystals of the layered superconductor Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$, where the crystal structure has quasi-one-dimensional characteristics. A linear temperature dependence of $Δλ(T)$ is observed for $T\ll T_c$, in contrast to the exponential decay of fully gapped superconductors. This indicates the existence of line nodes in the superconducting energy gap. A detailed analysis shows that the normalized superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$, which is converted from $Δλ(T)$, can be well described by a multigap scenario, with nodes in one of the superconducting gaps, providing clear evidence for nodal superconductivity in Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$.

Ising-type Magnetic Anisotropy in CePd$_2$As$_2$

We investigated the anisotropic magnetic properties of CePd$_2$As$_2$ by magnetic, thermal and electrical transport studies. X-ray diffraction confirmed the tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure and the high-quality of the single crystals. Magnetisation and magnetic susceptibility data taken along the different crystallographic directions evidence a huge crystalline electric field (CEF) induced Ising-type magneto-crystalline anisotropy with a large $c$-axis moment and a small in-plane moment at low temperature. A detailed CEF analysis based on the magnetic susceptibility data indicates an almost pure $\langle\pm5/2 \rvert$ CEF ground-state doublet with the dominantly $\langle\pm3/2 \rvert$ and the $\langle\pm1/2 \rvert$ doublets at 290 K and 330 K, respectively. At low temperature, we observe a uniaxial antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at $T_N=14.7$ K with the crystallographic $c$-direction being the magnetic easy-axis. The magnetic entropy gain up to $T_N$ reaches almost $R\ln2$ indicating localised $4f$-electron magnetism without significant Kondo-type interactions. Below $T_N$, the application of a magnetic field along the $c$-axis induces a metamagnetic transition from the AFM to a field-polarised phase at $μ_0H_{c0}=0.95$ T, exhibiting a text-book example of a spin-flip transition as anticipated for an Ising-type AFM.

Antiferromagnetism with divalent Eu in EuNi$_5$As$_3$

We have successfully synthesized single crystals of EuNi$_5$As$_3$ using a flux method and we present a comprehensive study of the physical properties using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. EuNi$_5$As$_3$ undergoes two close antiferromagnetic transitions at respective temperatures of $T_{N1}$ = 7.2 K and $T_{N2}$ = 6.4 K, which are associated with the Eu$^{2+}$ moments. Both transitions are suppressed upon applying a field and we map the temperature-field phase diagrams for fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the easy $a$ axis. XAS measurements reveal that the Eu is strongly divalent, with very little temperature dependence, indicating the localized Eu$^{2+}$ nature of EuNi$_5$As$_3$, with a lack of evidence for heavy fermion behavior.

Superconductivity and multiple pressure-induced phases in BaPt$_2$As$_2$

The newly discovered BaPt$_2$As$_2$ shows a structural distortion at around 275~K, followed by the emergence of superconductivity at lower temperatures. Here we identify the presence of charge density wave (CDW) order at room temperature and ambient pressure using single crystal x-ray diffraction, with both a superlattice and an incommensurate modulation, where there is a change of the superlattice structure below $\simeq$ 275~K. Upon applying pressure, BaPt$_2$As$_2$ shows a rich temperature-pressure phase diagram with multiple pressure-induced transitions at high temperatures, the emergence or disappearance of which are correlated with sudden changes in the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. These findings demonstrate that BaPt$_2$As$_2$ is a promising new system for studying competing interactions and the relationship between high-temperature electronic instabilities and superconductivity.

Two-gap superconductivity in LaNiGa$_2$ with non-unitary triplet pairing and even parity gap symmetry

The nature of the pairing states of superconducting LaNiC$_2$ and LaNiGa$_2$ has to date remained a puzzling question. Broken time reversal symmetry has been observed in both compounds and a group theoretical analysis implies a non-unitary triplet pairing state. However all the allowed non-unitary triplet states have nodal gap functions but most thermodynamic and NMR measurements indicate fully gapped superconductivity in LaNiC$_2$. Here we probe the gap symmetry of LaNiGa$_2$ by measuring the London penetration depth, specific heat and upper critical field. These measurements demonstrate two-gap nodeless superconductivity in LaNiGa$_2$, suggesting that this is a common feature of both compounds. These results allow us to propose a novel triplet superconducting state, where the pairing occurs between electrons of the same spin, but on different orbitals. In this case the superconducting wavefunction has a triplet spin component but isotropic even parity gap symmetry, yet the overall wavefunction remains antisymmetric under particle exchange. This model leads to a nodeless two-gap superconducting state which breaks time reversal symmetry, and therefore accounts well for the seemingly contradictory experimental results.

Crossover from a heavy fermion to intermediate valence state in noncentrosymmetric Yb2Ni12(P,As)7

We report measurements of the physical properties and electronic structure of the hexagonal compounds Yb2Ni12Pn7 (Pn = P, As) by measuring the electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat and partial fluorescence yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy (PFY-XAS). These demonstrate a crossover upon reducing the unit cell volume, from an intermediate valence state in Yb2Ni12As7 to a heavy-fermion paramagnetic state in Yb2Ni12P7, where the Yb is nearly trivalent. Application of pressure to Yb2Ni12P7 suppresses T_FL, the temperature below which Fermi liquid behavior is recovered, suggesting the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) under pressure. However, while there is little change in the Yb valence of Yb2Ni12P7 up to 30 GPa, there is a strong increase for Yb2Ni12As7 under pressure, before a near constant value is reached. These results indicate that any magnetic QCP in this system is well separated from strong valence fluctuations. The pressure dependence of the valence and lattice parameters of Yb2Ni12As7 are compared and at 1 GPa, there is an anomaly in the unit cell volume as well as a change in the slope of the Yb valence, indicating a correlation between structural and electronic changes.

Penetration depth measurements of K2Cr3As3 and Rb2Cr3As3

The newly discovered superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs), with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure have attracted considerable interest. The crystal structure consists of double-walled tubes of [Cr3As3]^(2-) that extend along the c-axis. Previously we reported measurements of the change in London penetration depth of polycrystalline samples of K2Cr3As3 using a tunnel diode oscillator based technique, which show a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures, giving evidence for line nodes in the superconducting gap. Here we report similar measurements of the penetration depth for polycrystalline Rb2Cr3As3 and several single crystals of K2Cr3As3, prepared by two different research groups. The single crystal measurements show similar behavior to polycrystalline samples down to 0.9-1.2 K, where a downturn is observed in the frequency shift for all single crystal samples. These results give further evidence for nodal superconductivity in K2Cr3As3, which indicates that the superconducting pairing state is unconventional. The different low temperature behavior observed in samples which have deteriorated after being exposed to air, emphasises that it is necessary to properly handle the samples prior to being measured because the A2Cr3As3 compounds are extremely air sensitive and evidence for nodal superconductivity from penetration depth measurements is only observed in the samples which display a sharp superconducting transition. Therefore further work is required to improve the quality of single crystals and to identify the origin of the downturn.

Evidence for two distinct superconducting phases in EuBiS$_2$F under pressure

We present a pressure study of the electrical resistivity, AC magnetic susceptibility and powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) of the newly discovered BiS$_2$-based superconductor EuBiS$_2$F. At ambient pressure, EuBiS$_2$F shows an anomaly in the resistivity at around $T_0\approx 280$ K and a superconducting transition at $T_c\approx 0.3$ K. Upon applying hydrostatic pressure, there is little change in $T_0$ but the amplitude of the resistive anomaly is suppressed, whereas there is a dramatic enhancement of $T_c$ from 0.3 K to about 8.6 K at a critical pressure of $p_c$ $\approx{1.4}$ GPa. XRD measurements confirm that this enhancement of $T_c$ coincides with a structural phase transition from a tetragonal phase ($P4/nmm$) to a monoclinic phase ($P2_1$/m), which is similar to that observed in isostructural LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. Our results suggest the presence of two different superconducting phases with distinct crystal structures in EuBiS$_2$F, which may be a general property of this family of BiS$_2$-based superconductors.

Evidence for nodal superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$

The recent discovery of superconductivity in the quasi-one-dimensional compound K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, which consists of double-walled tubes of [(Cr$_3$As$_3$)$^{2-}]^\infty$ that run along the c axis, has attracted immediate attention as a potential system for studying superconductors with reduced dimensionality. Here we report clear experimental evidence for the unconventional nature of the superconducting order parameter in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, by precisely measuring the temperature dependence of the change in the penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ using a tunnel diode oscillator. Linear behavior of $Δλ(T)$ is observed for $T\ll T_c$, instead of the exponential behavior of conventional superconductors, indicating that there are line nodes in the superconducting gap. This is strong evidence for unconventional behavior and may provide key information for identifying the pairing state of this novel superconductor.

Superconductivity and structural distortion in BaPt$_2$As$_2$

We successfully synthesized the BaPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals and studied their structural and physical properties at low temperatures. BaPt$_2$As$_2$ crystallizes in the CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type tetragonal structure (P4/nmm) at room temperature and undergoes a first-order structural transition at $T_S\simeq 275$ K, which is likely associated with a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. BCS-type superconductivity with two subsequent transitions at $T_{c1}=1.67$K and $T_{c2}$=1.33K are observed in this compound. Thus, BaPt$_2$As$_2$ may serve as a new system for studying the interplay of superconductivity and the CDW order.
