Optical characterization and ionizing-radiation response of the BCF-20XL scintillating-wavelength-shifting fiber

We report optical characterization and ionizing-radiation measurements of the scintillating-wavelength-shifting (Sci-WLS) fiber BCF-20XL from Luxium Solutions. Attenuation lengths were obtained from transmitted emission spectra using a 3.0 m fiber with a spectrophotometer and described with a two-component attenuation model, yielding a long attenuation length of 6.70 m and a short attenuation length of 0.16 m. The spectral measurements also reveal wavelength-dependent attenuation, with the long component increasing with wavelength and the short component becoming less significant at longer wavelengths. The scintillation response was also characterized under radioactive alpha, beta, and gamma irradiation using SiPM-based readout, providing a benchmark measurement of the light output from BCF-20XL.

Energy Calibration and Performance of HPGe Detectors in the LEGEND-200 Experiment

This paper describes the energy scale procedures and germanium detectors performance in the LEGEND-200 experiment, a critical component for the first unblinding in the search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We detail the digital signal processing pipeline, the methodologies for peak-shape modeling and energy calibration procedures utilizing weekly $^{228}$Th source calibration runs. The optimized energy reconstruction achieves a combined average resolution of $(2.47 \pm 0.08)$~keV at $Q_{\beta\beta} = 2039$~keV. The weekly variation of calibration peak positions are below 0.05~keV for energies up to 2614.5~keV, showing a high stability of the energy scale over time and across detectors. Furthermore, systematic corrections effectively address residual non-linearities and energy bias in the region of interest.

Response of wavelength-shifting and scintillating-wavelength-shifting fibers to ionizing radiation

We report results of characterizing the response and light transport of wavelength-shifting (WLS) and scintillating-wavelength-shifting (Sci-WLS) fibers under irradiation by radioactive $\alpha$, $\beta$, and $\gamma$ sources. Light yield and light transmission were measured for the WLS fiber BCF-91A from Saint-Gobain and for a new Sci-WLS fiber EJ-160 from Eljen Technology. The two variants with different fluor mixtures, EJ-160I and EJ-160II, exhibited approximately five and seven times higher light yield than BCF-91A, respectively, while their attenuation lengths were 3.80\,m for BCF-91A, 4.00\,m for EJ-160I, and 2.50\,m for EJ-160II.

Optical characterization of wavelength-shifting and scintillating-wavelength-shifting fibers

We report results of optical characterizations of new wavelength-shifting and scintillating-wavelength-shifting fibers EJ-182 and EJ-160 from Eljen Technology and compare them to the wavelength-shifting fiber BCF-91A from Saint-Gobain. The wavelength-dependence of attenuation was derived from spectral measurements confirming that the long attenuation length increases with wavelength, while short attenuation effects become less significant at longer wavelengths. The impact of the environmental refractive index was studied by immersing the EJ-160II fiber in water. Immersing the fiber in water reduced the overall light output and suppressed the short attenuation component, which can be explained by reduced light-collection efficiency due to the smaller refractive-index contrast between the fiber cladding and the surrounding medium.

First Results on the Search for Lepton Number Violating Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with the LEGEND-200 Experiment

The LEGEND collaboration is searching for neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay by operating high-purity germanium detectors enriched in $^{76}$Ge in a low-background liquid argon environment. Building on key technological innovations from GERDA and the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, LEGEND-200 has performed a first $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay search based on 61.0 kg yr of data. Over half of this exposure comes from our highest performing detectors, including newly developed inverted-coaxial detectors, and is characterized by an estimated background level of $0.5^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ cts/(keV kg yr) in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay signal region. A combined analysis of data from GERDA, the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, and LEGEND-200, characterized by a 90% confidence level exclusion sensitivity of $2.8 \times 10^{26}$ yr on the half-life of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, reveals no evidence for a signal and sets a new observed lower limit at $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 1.9 \times 10^{26}$ yr (90% confidence level). Assuming the decay is mediated by Majorana neutrinos, this corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range $m_{\beta\beta} < 75-200$ meV, depending on the adopted nuclear matrix element.

LEGEND-1000 Preconceptual Design Report

We propose the construction of LEGEND-1000, the ton-scale Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless $\beta \beta$ Decay. This international experiment is designed to answer one of the highest priority questions in fundamental physics. It consists of 1000 kg of Ge detectors enriched to more than 90% in the $^{76}$Ge isotope operated in a liquid argon active shield at a deep underground laboratory. By combining the lowest background levels with the best energy resolution in the field, LEGEND-1000 will perform a quasi-background-free search and can make an unambiguous discovery of neutrinoless double-beta decay with just a handful of counts at the decay $Q$ value. The experiment is designed to probe this decay with a 99.7%-CL discovery sensitivity in the $^{76}$Ge half-life of $1.3\times10^{28}$ years, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass upper limit in the range of 9-21 meV, to cover the inverted-ordering neutrino mass scale with 10 yr of live time.
