No Landau-Yang in QCD

The Landau-Yang theorem, forbidding transition amplitudes between a massive spin-1 particle and two photons, is widely assumed to apply to other massless spin-1 particles. We show that this is not true in Standard-Model QCD, so that for instance antisymmetric colour-octet spin-1 quarkonia can be formed by two on-shell gluons in second-order perturbative QCD.

Towards NNLL resummation: hard matching coefficients for squark and gluino hadroproduction

We present the hard matching coefficients for squark and gluino hadroproduction. The hard matching coefficients follow from the next-to-leading order cross section near threshold and are an important ingredient for performing threshold resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We discuss the calculation, list the analytical results and study the numerical impact of these corrections. We find that the impact of the hard matching coefficients can be considerable, with the largest effect observed for final states involving gluinos.

NNLL resummation for squark-antisquark pair production at the LHC

We consider the resummation of soft gluon emission for squark-antisquark pair-production at the LHC at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We present the analytical ingredients needed for the calculation and provide numerical predictions for the LHC at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 14 TeV. We find a significant reduction in the scale uncertainty and a considerable increase in the prediction of the total cross section. Compared to the next-to-leading order prediction, the corrections increase the cross section by up to 30% for 1.5 TeV squarks at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV.

Squark and gluino hadroproduction

We review the theoretical status of squark and gluino hadroproduction and provide numerical predictions for all squark and gluino pair-production processes at the Tevatron and at the LHC, with a particular emphasis on proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV. Our predictions include next-to-leading order supersymmetric QCD corrections and the resummation of soft gluon emission at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. We discuss the impact of the higher-order corrections on total cross sections, and provide an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty due to scale variation and the parton distribution functions.

Soft gluon resummation for squark and gluino pair-production at hadron colliders

We report on the study of soft gluon effects in the production of squarks and gluinos at hadron colliders. Close to production threshold, the emission of soft gluon results in the appearence of large logarithmic corrections in the theoretical expressions. In order to resum these corrections at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy appropriate one-loop anomalous dimensions have to be calculated. We present the calculation of the anomalous dimensions for all production channels of squarks and gluinos and provide numerical predictions for the Tevatron and the LHC.

Physics at the CLIC Multi-TeV Linear Collider

This report summarizes a study of the physics potential of the CLIC e+e- linear collider operating at centre-of-mass energies from 1 TeV to 5 TeV with luminosity of the order of 10^35 cm^-2 s^-1. First, the CLIC collider complex is surveyed, with emphasis on aspects related to its physics capabilities, particularly the luminosity and energy, and also possible polarization, γγand e-e- collisions. The next CLIC Test facility, CTF3, and its R&D programme are also reviewed. We then discuss aspects of experimentation at CLIC, including backgrounds and experimental conditions, and present a conceptual detector design used in the physics analyses, most of which use the nominal CLIC centre-of-mass energy of 3 TeV. CLIC contributions to Higgs physics could include completing the profile of a light Higgs boson by measuring rare decays and reconstructing the Higgs potential, or discovering one or more heavy Higgs bosons, or probing CP violation in the Higgs sector. Turning to physics beyond the Standard Model, CLIC might be able to complete the supersymmetric spectrum and make more precise measurements of sparticles detected previously at the LHC or a lower-energy linear e+e- collider: γγcollisions and polarization would be particularly useful for these tasks. CLIC would also have unique capabilities for probing other possible extensions of the Standard Model, such as theories with extra dimensions or new vector resonances, new contact interactions and models with strong WW scattering at high energies. In all the scenarios we have studied, CLIC would provide significant fundamental physics information beyond that available from the LHC and a lower-energy linear e+e- collider, as a result of its unique combination of high energy and experimental precision.

Towards an effective-action approach to fermion-loop corrections

We present a study of the effective action approach to incorporate higher-order effects in e^+e^- -> n fermions. In its minimal version, the effective action approach is found to exhibit problems with unitarity and high-energy behaviour. We identify the origin of these problems by investigating the zero-mode solutions of the Ward Identities. A numerical analysis of the importance of the zero-mode solutions is presented for four-fermion production processes.

NLO QCD corrections to t anti-t H production in hadron collisions

The Higgs boson H of the Standard Model can be searched for in the channels p pbar / pp -> t tbar H + X at the Tevatron and the LHC. The cross sections for these processes and the final-state distributions of the Higgs boson and top quarks are presented at next-to-leading order QCD. To calculate these QCD corrections, a special calculational technique for pentagon diagrams has been developed and the dipole subtraction formalism has been adopted for massive particles. The impact of the corrections on the total cross sections is characterized by K factors, the ratios of the cross sections in next-to-leading order over leading order QCD. At the central scale mu_0 = (2 m_t + M_H)/2 the K factors are found to be slightly below unity for the Tevatron (K \sim 0.8) and slightly above unity for the LHC (K \sim 1.2). Including the corrections significantly stabilizes the theoretical predictions for total cross sections and for the distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum of the Higgs boson and top quarks.

Electroweak two-loop Sudakov logarithms for on-shell fermions and bosons

We calculate the virtual electroweak Sudakov (double) logarithms at one- and two-loop level for arbitrary on-shell/on-resonance particles in the Standard Model. The associated Sudakov form factors apply in a universal way to arbitrary non-mass-suppressed electroweak processes at high energies, although this universality has to be interpreted with care. The actual calculation is performed in the temporal Coulomb gauge, where the relevant contributions from collinear-soft gauge-boson exchange are contained exclusively in the self-energies of the external on-shell/on-resonance particles. In view of the special status of the time-like components in this gauge, a careful analysis of the asymptotic states of the theory is required. From this analysis we derive an all-order version of the Goldstone-boson Equivalence Theorem without the need for finite compensation factors. By exploiting conditions obtained from non-renormalization requirements, which are a consequence of our choice of gauge, we show that the Sudakov corrections can be extracted through a combination of energy derivatives and projections by means of external sources. We observe that the Standard Model behaves dynamically like an unbroken theory in the Sudakov limit, in spite of the fact that the explicit particle masses are needed at the kinematical (phase-space) level while calculating the Sudakov form factors.

Higgs Radiation off Top Quarks at the Tevatron and the LHC

Higgs bosons can be searched for in the channels $p\bar p/pp\to t\bar tH+X$ at the Tevatron and the LHC. We have calculated the QCD corrections to these processes in the Standard Model at next-to-leading order. The higher-order corrections reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence considerably and stabilize the theoretical predictions for the cross sections. At the central scale $μ=(2m_t+M_H)/2$ the properly defined $K$ factors are slightly below unity for the Tevatron ($K \sim 0.8$) and slightly above unity for the LHC ($K \sim 1.2$).

New Insights into the Perturbative Structure of Electroweak Sudakov Logarithms

To match the expected experimental precision at future linear colliders, improved theoretical predictions beyond next-to-leading order are required. At the anticipated energy scale of sqrt(s)=1 TeV the electroweak virtual corrections are strongly enhanced by collinear-soft Sudakov logarithms of the form log^2(s/M^2), with M being the generic mass scale of the W and Z bosons. By choosing an appropriate gauge, we have developed a formalism to calculate such corrections for arbitrary electroweak processes. As an example we consider in this letter the process e^+e^- --> f fbar and study the perturbative structure of the electroweak Sudakov logarithms by means of an explicit two-loop calculation. In this way we investigate how the Standard Model, with its mass gap between the photon and Z boson in the neutral sector, compares to unbroken theories like QED and QCD. In contrast to what is known for unbroken theories we find that the Sudakov logarithms are not exclusively given by the so-called rainbow diagrams, owing to the mass gap and the charged-current interactions. In spite of this, we nevertheless observe that the two-loop corrections are consistent with an exponentiation of the one-loop corrections. In this sense the Standard Model behaves like an unbroken theory at high energies.

Electroweak Sudakov logarithms in the Coulomb gauge

We describe a formalism for calculating electroweak Sudakov logarithms in the Coulomb gauge. This formalism is applicable to arbitrary electroweak processes. For illustration we focus on the specific reactions e^+e^- -> f \bar{f} and e^+e^- -> W_T^+W_T^-, W_L^+W_L^-, which contain all the salient details of dealing with the various types of particles. We discuss an explicit two-loop calculation and have a critical look at the (non-)exponentiation and factorisation properties of the Sudakov logarithms in the Standard Model.

Four-Fermion Production in Electron-Positron Collisions

This report summarises the results of the four-fermion working group of the LEP2-MC workshop, held at CERN from 1999 to 2000. Recent developments in the calculation of four-fermion processes in electron-positron collisions at LEP-2 centre-of-mass energies are presented, concentrating on predictions for four main reactions: W-pair production, visible photons in four-fermion events, single-W production and Z-pair production. Based on a comparison of results derived within different approaches, theoretical uncertainties on these predictions are established.

An effective Lagrangian approach for unstable particles

We propose a novel procedure for handling processes that involve unstable intermediate particles. By using gauge-invariant effective Lagrangians it is possible to perform a gauge-invariant resummation of (arbitrary) self-energy effects. For instance, gauge-invariant tree-level amplitudes can be constructed with the decay widths of the unstable particles properly included in the propagators. In these tree-level amplitudes modified vertices are used, which contain extra gauge-restoring terms prescribed by the effective Lagrangians. We discuss the treatment of the phenomenologically important unstable particles, like the top-quark, the $W$- and $Z$-bosons, and the Higgs-boson, and derive the relevant modified Feynman rules explicitly.

The Production of Charginos/Neutralinos and Sleptons at Hadron Colliders

We analyse the production of charginos/neutralinos and sleptons at the hadron colliders Tevatron and LHC in the direct channels: $p\bar{p}/pp \to \tildeχ_i \tildeχ_j + X$ and $\tilde{\ell} \bar{\tilde{\ell}'} +X$. The cross sections for these reactions are given in next-to-leading order SUSY QCD. By including the higher-order corrections, the predictions become theoretically stable, being nearly independent of the factorization and renormalization scales. Since the corrections increase the cross sections, the discovery range for these particles is extended in the refined analysis.

One-loop QCD interconnection effects in pair production of top quarks

We calculate the one-loop non-factorizable QCD corrections to the production and decay of pairs of top quarks at various collider experiments. These non-factorizable corrections interconnect the different production and decay stages of the off-shell top-pair production processes. This in particular affects the invariant-mass distributions of the off-shell top quarks, resulting in a shift of the maximum of the distorted Breit-Wigner distributions. Although the non-factorizable corrections can be large, the actual shift in the mass as determined from the peak position of the corrected Breit-Wigner line-shape is below $100\MeV$.

SUSY Particle Production at the Tevatron

The calculation of the next-to-leading order SUSY-QCD corrections to the production of squarks, gluinos and gauginos at the Tevatron is reviewed. The NLO corrections stabilize the theoretical predictions of the various production cross sections significantly and lead to sizeable enhancements of the most relevant cross sections for scales near the average mass of the produced massive particles. We discuss the phenomenological consequences of the results on present and future experimental analyses.
