Resistance of superconducting nanowires connected to normal metal leads

We study experimentally the low temperature resistance of superconducting nanowires connected to normal metal reservoirs. We find that a substantial fraction of the nanowires is resistive, down to the lowest temperature measured, indicative of an intrinsic boundary resistance due to the Andreev-conversion of normal current to supercurrent. The results are successfully analyzed in terms of the kinetic equations for diffusive superconductors.

Positive cross-correlations due to Dynamical Channel-Blockade in a three-terminal quantum dot

We investigate current fluctuations in a three-terminal quantum dot in the sequential tunneling regime. In the voltage-bias configuration chosen here, the circuit is operated like a beam splitter, i.e. one lead is used as an input and the other two as outputs. In the limit where a double occupancy of the dot is not possible, a super-Poissonian Fano factor of the current in the input lead and positive cross-correlations between the current fluctuations in the two output leads can be obtained, due to dynamical channel-blockade. When a single orbital of the dot transports current, this effect can be obtained by lifting the spin-degeneracy of the circuit with ferromagnetic leads or with a magnetic field. When several orbitals participate in the electronic conduction, lifting spin-degeneracy is not necessary. In all cases, we show that a super-Poissonian Fano factor for the input current is not equivalent to positive cross-correlations between the outputs. We identify the conditions for obtaining these two effects and discuss possible experimental realizations.

Positive cross-correlations in a three-terminal quantum dot with ferromagnetic contacts

We study current fluctuations in an interacting three-terminal quantum dot with ferromagnetic leads. For appropriately polarized contacts, the transport through the dot is governed by a novel dynamical spin blockade, i.e., a spin-dependent bunching of tunneling events not present in the paramagnetic case. This leads for instance to positive zero-frequency cross-correlations of the currents in the output leads even in the absence of spin accumulation on the dot. We include the influence of spin-flip scattering and identify favorable conditions for the experimental observation of this effect with respect to polarization of the contacts and tunneling rates.

Dynamical Spin-Blockade in a quantum dot with paramagnetic leads

We investigate current fluctuations in a three-terminal quantum dot in the sequential tunneling regime. Dynamical spin blockade can be induced when the spin-degeneracy of the dot states is lifted by a magnetic field. This results in super-Poissonian shot noise and positive zero-frequency cross-correlations. Our proposed setup can be realized with semiconductor quantum dots.

Quantum Dot coupled to a normal and a superconducting lead

We report on electrical transport measurements in a carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to a normal and a superconducting lead. Depending on the ratio of Kondo temperature $T_{K}$ and superconducting gap $Δ$ the zero bias conductance resonance either is split into two side-peaks or persists. We also compare our data with a simple model of a resonant level - superconductor interface.

Kondo Effect and Josephson Current through a Quantum Dot between Two Superconductors

We investigate the supercurrent through a quantum dot for the whole range of couplings using the numerical renormalization group method. We find that the Josephson current switches abruptly from a $π$- to a 0-phase as the coupling increases. At intermediate couplings the total spin in the ground state depends on the phase difference between the two superconductors. Our numerical results can explain the crossover in the conductance observed experimentally by Buitelaar \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{89}, 256 801 (2002)].

Charge transport through a SET with a mechanically oscillating island

We consider a single-electron transistor (SET) whose central island is a nanomechanical oscillator. The gate capacitance of the SET depends on the mechanical displacement, thus, the vibrations of the island vibrations may strongly influence the current-voltage characteristics, current noise, and higher cumulants of the current. Harmonic oscillations of the island and oscillations with random amplitude (e.g., due to the thermal activation) change the transport characteristics in a different way. The noise spectrum has a peak at the frequency of the island oscillations; when the island oscillates harmonically, the peak reduces to a $δ$-peak. We show that knowledge of the SET transport properties helps to determine in what way the island oscillates, to estimate the amplitude, and the frequency of the oscillations.

Full Counting Statistics in Quantum Contacts

Full counting statistics is a fundamentally new concept in quantum transport. After a review of basic statistics theory, we introduce the powerful Green's function approach to full counting statistics. To illustrate the concept we consider a number of examples. For generic two-terminal contacts we show how counting statistics elucidates the common (and different) features of transport between normal and superconducting contacts. Finally, we demonstrate how correlations in multi-terminal structures are naturally included in the formalism.

Andreev reflection eigenvalue density in mesoscopic conductors

The energy-dependent Andreev reflection eigenvalues determine the transport properties of normal-superconducting systems. We evaluate the eigenvalue density to get an insight into formation of resonant electron-hole transport channels. The circuit-theory-like method developed can be applied to any generic mesoscopic conductor or combinations thereof. We present the results for experimentally relevant cases of a diffusive wire and a double tunnel junction.

Full counting statistics of multiple Andreev reflections

We derive the full distribution of transmitted particles through a superconducting point contact of arbitrary transparency under voltage bias. The charge transport is dominated by multiple Andreev reflections. The counting statistics is a multinomial distribution of processes, in which multiple charges ne (n=1,2,3,...) are transferred through the contact. For zero temperature we obtain analytical expressions for the probabilities of the multiple Andreev reflections. The current, shot noise and high current cumulants in a variety of situations can be obtained from our result.

Spin-Flip Noise in a Multi-Terminal Spin-Valve

We study shot noise and cross correlations in a four terminal spin-valve geometry using a Boltzmann-Langevin approach. The Fano factor (shot noise to current ratio) depends on the magnetic configuration of the leads and the spin-flip processes in the normal metal. In a four-terminal geometry, spin-flip processes are particular prominent in the cross correlations between terminals with opposite magnetization.

Decoherence of cold atomic gases in magnetic micro-traps

We derive a model to describe decoherence of atomic clouds in atom-chip traps taking the excited states of the trapping potential into account. We use this model to investigate decoherence for a single trapping well and for a pair of trapping wells that form the two arms of an atom interferometer. Including the discrete spectrum of the trapping potential gives rise to a decoherence mechanism with a decoherence rate $Γ$ that scales like $Γ\sim 1/r_0^4$ with the distance $r_0$ from the trap minimum to the wire.

Full counting statistics of incoherent Andreev transport

We study the full counting statistics of heterostructures consisting of normal metal parts connected to a superconducting terminal. Assuming that coherent superconducting correlations are suppressed in the normal metals we show, using Keldysh-Nambu Green's functions, that the system can be mapped onto a purely normal system with twice the number of elements. For a superconducting beam splitter with several normal terminals we obtain general results for the counting statistics.

Multiple Andreev Reflections in a Carbon Nanotube Quantum Dot

We report resonant multiple Andreev relections in a multiwall carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads. The position and magnitude of the subharmonic gap structure is found to depend strongly on the level positions of the single-electron states which are adjusted with a gate electrode. We discuss a theoretical model of the device and compare the calculated differential conductance with the experimental data. Full Counting Statistics of Superconductor--Normal-Metal Heterostructures

The article develops a powerful theoretical tool to obtain the full counting statistics. By a slight extension of the standard Keldysh method we can access immediately all correlation functions of the current operator. Embedded in a quantum generalization of the circuit theory of electronic transport, we are able to study the full counting statistics of a large class of two-terminal contacts and multi-terminal structures, containing superconductors and normal metals as elements. The practical use of the method is demonstrated in many examples.

Shot Noise and Proximity Effect in Superconductor--Normal-Metal Heterostructures

Current noise provides useful information on correlations important for transport properties of mesoscopic systems. Of particular interest, both experimentally and theoretically, are heterostructures of normal metals and superconductors. We use an extended Keldysh-Green's function approach to calculate the current correlations fully accounting for the superconducting proximity effect. The shot noise in diffusive wires shows a reentrant behaviour, similar to the reentrance effect of the conductance. At intermediate energies the effective charge (the ratio of the differential noise and differential conductance) is suppressed below the value of the Cooper pair charge 2e due to higher correlations. In superconducting heterostructures with more than two normal leads, we address the question of the sign of correlations between currents in different terminals. We show that positive crosscorrelations are a generic feature in these structures, which should be easily observable experimentally.

Shot Noise of Mesoscopic NS Structures: The Role of Andreev Reflection

Electronic properties of mesoscopic systems made of normal metal in contact with normal and superconducting reservoirs are determined by Andreev Reflection. We address both experimentally and theoretically how Andreev Reflection manifests itself in shot noise experiments and what physics can be deduced from such measurements. We report high frequency measurements in which Andreev Reflection affects the distribution statistics of the electronic excitations, resulting in a shift of the classical-to-quantum regime or equilibrium-to-shot noise crossovers. We also demonstrate that the effective charge carried by paired electrons contains more information: its deviation from 2e is related to correlations among pairs. This is exemplified by the measurement of phase dependent noise in an Andreev Interferometer. The use of full counting statistics allows us to understand how the correlations occur, and its application to the case of the Andreev Interferometer exhibits a very good agreement between theory and experiment.

Phase Sensitive Shot Noise in an Andreev Interferometer

We investigate nonequilibrium noise in a diffusive Andreev interferometer, in which currents emerging from two Normal metal/Superconductor (N-S) interfaces can interfere. We observe a modulation of the shot noise when the phase difference between the two N-S interfaces is varied by a magnetic flux. This is the signature of phase-sensitive fluctuations in the normal metal. The effective charge inferred from the shot noise measurement is close to q_eff=2e but shows phase-dependent deviations from 2e at finite energy, which we interprete as due to pair correlations. Experimental data are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on an extended Keldysh Green's function approach.
