The LHCb VELO Upgrade Module Construction

The LHCb detector has undergone a major upgrade for LHC Run 3. This Upgrade I detector facilitates operation at higher luminosity and utilises full-detector information at the LHC collision rate, critically including the use of vertex information. A new vertex locator system, the VELO Upgrade, has been constructed. The core element of the new VELO are the double-sided pixelated hybrid silicon detector modules which operate in vacuum close to the LHC beam in a high radiation environment. The construction and quality assurance tests of these modules are described in this paper. The modules incorporate 200 \mum thick, n-on-p silicon sensors bump-bonded to 130 \nm technology ASICs. These are attached with high precision to a silicon microchannel substrate that uses evaporative CO$_2$ cooling. The ASICs are controlled and read out with flexible printed circuits that are glued to the substrate and wire-bonded to the chips. The mechanical support of the module is given by a carbon fibre plate, two carbon fibre rods and an aluminium plate. The sensor attachment was achieved with an average precision of 21 $\mathrm{μm}$, more than 99.5\% of all pixels are fully functional, and a thermal figure of merit of 3 \mathrm{Kcm^{2}W^{-1}}$ was achieved. The production of the modules was successfully completed in 2021, with the final assembly and installation completed in time for data taking in 2022.

Charge collection properties of prototype sensors for the LHCb VELO upgrade

An extensive sensor testing campaign is presented, dedicated to measuring the charge collection properties of prototype candidates for the Vertex Locator (VELO) detector for the upgraded LHCb experiment. The charge collection is measured with sensors exposed to fluences of up to $8 \times 10^{15}~1~\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}~ \mathrm{ \,n_{eq}}~{\mathrm{ \,cm}}^{-2}$, as well as with nonirradiated prototypes. The results are discussed, including the influence of different levels of irradiation and bias voltage on the charge collection properties. Charge multiplication is observed on some sensors that were nonuniformly irradiated with 24 GeV protons, to the highest fluence levels. An analysis of the charge collection near the guard ring region is also presented, revealing significant differences between the sensor prototypes. All tested sensor variants succeed in collecting the minimum required charge of 6000 electrons after the exposure to the maximum fluence.

The HEV Ventilator

HEV is a low-cost, versatile, high-quality ventilator, which has been designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ventilator is intended to be used both in and out of hospital intensive care units, and for both invasive and non-invasive ventilation. The hardware can be complemented with an external turbine for use in regions where compressed air supplies are not reliably available. The standard modes provided include PC-A/C(Pressure Assist Control),PC-A/C-PRVC(Pressure Regulated Volume Control), PC-PSV (Pressure Support Ventilation) and CPAP (Continuous Positive airway pressure). HEV is designed to support remote training and post market surveillance via a web interface and data logging to complement the standard touch screen operation, making it suitable for a wide range of geographical deployment. The HEV design places emphasis on the quality of the pressure curves and the reactivity of the trigger, delivering a global performance which will be applicable to ventilator needs beyond theCOVID-19 pandemic. This article describes the conceptual design and presents the prototype units together with their performance evaluation.

The HEV Ventilator Proposal

We propose the design of a ventilator which can be easily manufactured and integrated into the hospital environment to support COVID-19 patients. The unit is designed to support standard ventilator modes of operation, most importantly PRVC (Pressure Regulated Volume Control) and SIMV-PC (Synchronised Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation) modes. The unit is not yet an approved medical device and is in the concept and prototyping stage. It is presented here to invite fast feedback for development and deployment in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Search for a dimuon resonance in the $Υ$ mass region

A search is performed for a spin-0 boson, $ϕ$, produced in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, using prompt $ϕ\rightarrowμ^+μ^-$ decays and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 3.0 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. No evidence is found for a signal in the mass range from 5.5 to 15 GeV. Upper limits are placed on the product of the production cross-section and the branching fraction into the dimuon final state. The limits are comparable to the best existing over most of the mass region considered and are the first to be set near the $Υ$ resonances.

Measurement of $C\!P$ asymmetries in two-body $B_{(s)}^{0}$-meson decays to charged pions and kaons

The time-dependent $C\!P$ asymmetries in $B^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_s^0\to K^+\!K^-$ decays are measured using a data sample of $pp$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The same data sample is used to measure the time-integrated $C\!P$ asymmetries in $B^0\to K^+π^-$ and $B_s^0\toπ^+ K^-$ decays. The results are $C_{π^+π^-} = -0.34 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.01$, $S_{π^+π^-} = -0.63 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.01$, $C_{K^+\!K^-} = 0.20 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.02$, $S_{K^+\!K^-} = 0.18 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.02$, $C_{K^+\!K^-}^{ΔΓ} = -0.79 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.10$, $A_{C\!P}^{B^0} = -0.084 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.003$, and $A_{C\!P}^{B_s^0} = 0.213 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.007$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Evidence for $C\!P$ violation is found in the $B_s^0\to K^+\!K^-$ decay for the first time.

Measurement of $D_s^{\pm}$ production asymmetry in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ and 8 TeV

The inclusive $D_s^{\pm}$ production asymmetry is measured in $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} =7$ and 8 TeV. Promptly produced $D_s^{\pm}$ mesons are used, which decay as $D_s^{\pm}\toϕπ^{\pm}$, with $ϕ\to K^+K^-$. The measurement is performed in bins of transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$, covering the range $2.5<p_{\rm T}<25.0$ GeV$/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$. No kinematic dependence is observed. Evidence of nonzero $D_s^{\pm}$ production asymmetry is found with a significance of 3.3 standard deviations.

Observation of the decay $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$

The decay $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$ is observed using $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 $fb^{-1}$. The ratio of branching fractions between $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$ and $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ π^-$ decays is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p}π^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ π^-)} = 0.0540 \pm 0.0023 \pm 0.0032. \end{equation*} Two resonant structures are observed in the $ Λ_c^+ π^-$ mass spectrum of the ${Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p\overline{p} π^-}$ decays, corresponding to the $Σ_c(2455)^0$ and $Σ_c^{*}(2520)^0$ states. The ratios of branching fractions with respect to the decay $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p} π^-$ are \begin{align*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Σ_c^0 p\overline{p})\times\mathcal{B}(Σ_c^0\to Λ_c^+ π^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p}π^-)} = 0.089\pm0.015\pm0.006, \frac{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Σ_c^{*0} p\overline{p})\times\mathcal{B}(Σ_c^{*0}\to Λ_c^+ π^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ p \overline{p}π^-)} = 0.119\pm0.020\pm0.014. \end{align*} In all of the above results, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The phase space is also examined for the presence of dibaryon resonances. No evidence for such resonances is found.

Measurement of $Υ$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV

The production cross-sections of $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV are measured with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $277 \pm 11$ $\rm pb^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment in 2015. The $Υ$ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode $Υ\toμ^{+}μ^{-}$. The differential production cross-sections times the dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the $Υ$ transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$, over the range $0 < p_{\rm T}< 30$ GeV/c and $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The ratios of the cross-sections with respect to the LHCb measurement at $\sqrt{s}$= 8 TeV are also determined. The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions based on NRQCD.

Evidence for the decay $B_{s}^0 \rightarrow \overline{K}{}^{*0}μ^+μ^-$

A search for the decay $B_{s}^0 \rightarrow \overline{K}{}^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ is presented using data sets corresponding to 1.0, 2.0 and 1.6 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected during $pp$ collisions with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. An excess is found over the background-only hypothesis with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The branching fraction of the $B_{s}^0 \rightarrow \overline{K}{}^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decay is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^0 \rightarrow \overline{K}{}^{*0}μ^+μ^-) = [2.9 \pm 1.0~(\text{stat}) \pm 0.2~(\text{syst}) \pm 0.3~(\text{norm})] \times 10^{-8}$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The third uncertainty is due to limited knowledge of external parameters used to normalise the branching fraction measurement.

Measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry in $B^-\to D_s^-D^0$ and $B^-\to D^-D^0$ decays

The $CP$ asymmetry in $B^-\to D_s^-D^0$ and $B^-\to D^-D^0$ decays is measured using LHCb data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The results are $A^{CP}(B^-\to D_s^-D^0)=(-0.4\pm 0.5\pm 0.5)\%$ and $A^{CP}(B^-\to D^-D^0)=( 2.3\pm 2.7\pm 0.4)\%$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. This is the first measurement of $A^{CP}(B^-\to D_s^-D^0)$ and the most precise determination of $A^{CP}(B^-\to D^-D^0)$. Neither result shows evidence of $CP$ violation.

Measurement of the inelastic $pp$ cross-section at a centre-of-mass energy of 13\,TeV

The cross-section for inelastic proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13\,TeV is measured with the LHCb detector. The fiducial cross-section for inelastic interactions producing at least one prompt long-lived charged particle with momentum $p>2$\,GeV/$c$ in the pseudorapidity range $2<η<5$ is determined to be $σ_{\rm acc}= 62.2 \pm 0.2 \pm 2.5$\,mb. The first uncertainty is the intrinsic systematic uncertainty of the measurement, the second is due to the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The statistical uncertainty is negligible. Extrapolation to full phase space yields the total inelastic proton-proton cross-section $σ_{\rm inel}= 75.4 \pm 3.0 \pm 4.5$\,mb, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second due to the extrapolation. An updated value of the inelastic cross-section at a centre-of-mass energy of 7\,TeV is also reported.

Measurement of $CP$ violation in $B^{0}\rightarrow D^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ decays

A measurement of the $CP$ asymmetries $S_{f}$ and $S_{\bar{f}}$ in $B^0\to D^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ decays is reported. The decays are reconstructed in a dataset collected with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0 \rm{ fb}^{-1}$. The $CP$ asymmetries are measured to be $S_{f} = 0.058 \pm 0.020 (\rm{stat}) \pm 0.011(\rm{syst})$ and $S_{\bar{f}} = 0.038\pm 0.020 (\text{stat})\pm 0.007 (\text{syst})$. These results are in agreement with, and more precise than, previous determinations. They are used to constrain $|\sin\left(2β+γ\right)|$ and $γ$ to intervals that are consistent with the current world-average values.

The HeRSCheL detector: high-rapidity shower counters for LHCb

The HeRSCheL detector consists of a set of scintillating counters, designed to increase the coverage of the LHCb experiment in the high-rapidity regions on either side of the main spectrometer. The new detector improves the capabilities of LHCb for studies of diffractive interactions, most notably Central Exclusive Production. In this paper the construction, installation, commissioning, and performance of HeRSCheL are presented.
