Bethe-Salpeter Meson Masses Beyond Ladder Approximation

The effect of quark-gluon vertex dressing on the ground state masses of the u/d-quark pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector mesons is considered with the Dyson-Schwinger equations. This extends the ladder-rainbow Bethe-Salpeter kernel to 2-loops. To render the calculations feasible for this exploratory study, we employ a simple infrared dominant model for the gluon exchange that implements the vertex dressing. The resulting model, involving two distinct representations of the effective gluon exchange kernel, preserves both the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity and charge conjugation symmetry. Numerical results confirm that the pseudoscalar meson retains its Goldstone boson character. The vector meson mass, already at a very acceptable value at ladder level, receives only 30 MeV of attraction from this vertex dressing. For the axial-vector states, which are about 300 MeV too low in ladder approximation, the results are mixed: the $1^{+-}$ state receives 290 MeV of repulsion, but the $1^{++}$ state is lowered further by 30 MeV. The exotic channels $0^{--}$ and $1^{-+}$ are found to have no states below 1.5 GeV in this model.

Strangeness dynamics and transverse pressure in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

We investigate hadron production as well as transverse hadron spectra from proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions from 2 $A\cdot$GeV to 21.3 $A\cdot$TeV within two independent transport approaches (HSD and UrQMD) that are based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom. The comparison to experimental data on transverse mass spectra from $pp$, $pA$ and C+C (or Si+Si) reactions shows the reliability of the transport models for light systems. For central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions at bombarding energies above $\sim$ 5 A$\cdot$GeV, furthermore, the measured $K^{\pm}$ transverse mass spectra have a larger inverse slope parameter than expected from the default calculations. We investigate various scenarios to explore their potential effects on the $K^\pm$ spectra. In particular the initial state Cronin effect is found to play a substantial role at top SPS and RHIC energies. However, the maximum in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio at 20 to 30 A$\cdot$GeV is missed by ~40% and the approximately constant slope of the $K^\pm$ spectra at SPS energies is not reproduced either. Our systematic analysis suggests that the additional pressure - as expected from lattice QCD calculations at finite quark chemical potential $μ_q$ and temperature $T$- should be generated by strong interactions in the early pre-hadronic/partonic phase of central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions.

Hadron formation and attenuation in deep inelastic lepton scattering off nuclei

We investigate hadron formation in deep inelastic lepton scattering on N, Kr and Xe nuclei in the kinematic regime of the HERMES experiment. The elementary electron-nucleon interaction is described within the event generator PYTHIA while a full coupled-channel treatment of the final state interactions is included by means of a BUU transport model. We find a good agreement with the measured charged hadron multiplicity ratio $R_M^h$ for N and Kr targets by accounting for the deceleration and absorption of the primarily produced particles as well as for the creation of secondary hadrons in the final state interactions.

Charmonium chemistry in A+A collisions at relativistic energies

Charmonium production and suppression in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies is investigated within different models, i.e. the comover absorption model, the threshold suppression model, the statistical coalescence model and the HSD transport approach. In HSD the charmonium dissociation cross sections with mesons are described by a simple phase-space parametrization including an effective coupling strength $|M_i|^2$ for the charmonium states $i=χ_c, J/ψ, ψ^\prime$. This allows to include the backward channels for charmonium reproduction by $D \bar{D}$ channels -- which are missed in the comover absorption and threshold suppression model -- employing detailed balance without introducing any new parameters. It is found that all approaches yield a reasonable description of $J/ψ$ suppression in S+U and Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies. However, they differ significantly in the $ψ^\prime/J/ψ$ ratio versus centrality at SPS and especially at RHIC energies. These pronounced differences can be exploited in future measurements at RHIC to distinguish the hadronic rescattering scenarios from quark coalescence close to the QGP phase boundary.

Quenching of high $p_\perp$ hadrons by (pre--)hadronic FSI at RHIC

Recently we have conjectured that (in-)elastic collisions of (pre-)hadronic high momentum states with the bulk of hadrons in the late fireball might substantially account for the attenuation of the high transverse momentum hadrons at RHIC. The potential hadronic attenuation has therefore to be addressed in further detail before definite conclusions on possible QCD effects in a deconfined QGP phase can be drawn with respect to the materializing jets. From our transport studies we find that the interactions of fully formed hadrons are practically negligible in central Au+Au collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV for $p_\perp\geq 6 GeV$, but have some importance for the shape of the ratio $R_{AA}$ at lower $p_\perp$ ($\leq 6 GeV$). However, a significant part of the large suppression seen experimentally is attributed to inelastic interactions of 'leading' jet-like pre-hadrons with the dense hadronic environment. In addition, we also show within this scenario first (preliminary) results of near-side and far-side correlations of high $p_\perp$ particles from central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. It turns out that the near-side correlations are unaltered -- in accordance with experiment -- whereas the far-side correlations are suppressed by $\sim$ 60%. Since the experimental observation is a nearly complete disappearance of the far-side jet there should be some additional and earlier partonic interactions in the dense and possibly colored medium.

Near-threshold production of a0(980) mesons in the reaction pp -> d K^+ \bar{K}^0

Using an effective Lagrangian approach as well as the Quark-Gluon Strings Model we analyze near-threshold production of a0(980)-mesons in the reaction NN -> d K \bar{K} as well as the background of non-resonant K\bar{K}-pair production. We argue that the reaction pp -> d K^+ \bar{K}^0 at an energy release Q<=100 MeV is dominated by the intermediate production of the a0(980)-resonance. At larger energies the non-resonant K^+\bar{K}^0-pair production - where the kaons are produced in a relative P-wave - becomes important. Then effects of final-state interactions are evaluated in a unitarized scattering-length approach and found to be in the order of a 20% suppression close to threshold. Thus in present experiments at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Jülich for Q<=107 MeV the a_0^+ signal can reliably be separated from the non-resonant K^+\bar{K^0} background.

Review of QGP signatures - ideas versus observables

We investigate hadron production and transverse hadron spectra in nucleus-nucleus collisions from 2 $A\cdot$GeV to 21.3 $A\cdot$TeV within two independent transport approaches (UrQMD and HSD) based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom. The enhancement of pion production in central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions relative to scaled $pp$ collisions (the 'kink') is described well by both approaches without involving a phase transition. However, the maximum in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio at 20 to 30 A$\cdot$GeV (the 'horn') is missed by $\sim$ 40%. Also, at energies above $\sim$ 5 A$\cdot$GeV, the measured $K^{\pm}$ $m_{T}$-spectra have a larger inverse slope than expected from the models. Thus the pressure generated by hadronic interactions in the transport models at high energies is too low. This finding suggests that the additional pressure - as expected from lattice QCD at finite quark chemical potential and temperature - might be generated by strong interactions in the early pre-hadronic/partonic phase of central heavy-ion collisions. Finally, we discuss the emergence of density perturbations in a first-order phase transition and why they might affect relative hadron multiplicities, collective flow, and hadron mean-free paths at decoupling.

Nonequilibrium Quantum-Field Dynamics and Off-Shell Transport for $ϕ^4$-theory in 2+1 dimensions

We solve the Kadanoff-Baym equations for nonequilibrium initial configurations of the $ϕ^4$-theory in 2+1 dimensions and compare to explicit solutions of generalized transport equations for the same theory. The latter transport equations are derived from the Kadanoff-Baym equation in a first order gradient expansion in phase space and explicitly retain the off-shell dynamics as inherent in the time-dependent spectral functions. The solutions of these equations compare very well with the exact solutions of the full Kadanoff-Baym equations with respect to the occupation numbers of the individual modes, the spectral evolution as well as the chemical equilibration process. Furthermore, the proper equilibrium off-shell distribution is reached for large times contrary to the quasiparticle Boltzmann limit. We additionally present a direct comparison of the solution of the generalized transport equations in the Kadanoff-Baym and Botermans-Malfliet form; both solutions are found to agree very well with each other.

Dynamics of strange, charm and high momentum hadrons in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

We investigate hadron production and attenuation of hadrons with strange and charm quarks (or antiquarks) as well as high transverse momentum hadrons in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions from 2 AGeV to 21.3 ATeV within two independent transport approaches (UrQMD and HSD). Both transport models are based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom, but do not include any explicit phase transition to a quark-gluon plasma. From our dynamical calculations we find that both models do not describe the maximum in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio at 20 - 30 AGeV in central Au+Au collisions found experimentally, though the excitation functions of strange mesons are reproduced well in HSD and UrQMD. Furthermore, the transport calculations show that the charmonium recreation by $D+\bar{D} \to J/Ψ+ meson$ reactions is comparable to the dissociation by 'comoving' mesons at RHIC energies contrary to SPS energies. This leads to the final result that the total $J/Ψ$ suppression as a function of centrality at RHIC should be less than the suppression seen at SPS energies where the 'comover' dissociation is substantial and the backward channels play no role. Furthermore, our transport calculations -- in comparison to experimental data on transverse momentum spectra from $pp$, d+Au and Au+Au reactions -- show that pre-hadronic effects are responsible for both the hardening of the hadron spectra for low transverse momenta (Cronin effect) as well as the suppression of high $p_T$ hadrons. The mutual interactions of formed hadrons are found to be negligible in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV for $p_T \geq$ 6 GeV/c and the sizeable suppression seen experimentally is attributed to a large extent to the interactions of 'leading' pre-hadrons with the dense environment.

Strangeness dynamics in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collision

We investigate hadron production as well as transverse hadron spectra in nucleus-nucleus collisions from 2 $A\cdot$GeV to 21.3 $A\cdot$TeV within two independent transport approaches (UrQMD and HSD) that are based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom. The comparison to experimental data demonstrates that both approaches agree quite well with each other and with the experimental data on hadron production. The enhancement of pion production in central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions relative to scaled $pp$ collisions (the 'kink') is well described by both approaches without involving any phase transition. However, the maximum in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio at 20 to 30 A$\cdot$GeV (the 'horn') is missed by $\sim$ 40%. A comparison to the transverse mass spectra from $pp$ and C+C (or Si+Si) reactions shows the reliability of the transport models for light systems. For central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions at bombarding energies above $\sim$ 5 A$\cdot$GeV, however, the measured $K^{\pm}$ $m_{T}$-spectra have a larger inverse slope parameter than expected from the calculations. The approximately constant slope of $K^\pm$ spectra at SPS (the 'step') is not reproduced either. Thus the pressure generated by hadronic interactions in the transport models above $\sim$ 5 A$\cdot$GeV is lower than observed in the experimental data. This finding suggests that the additional pressure - as expected from lattice QCD calculations at finite quark chemical potential and temperature - might be generated by strong interactions in the early pre-hadronic/partonic phase of central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions.

Evidence for nonhadronic degrees of freedom in the transverse mass spectra of kaons from relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions?

We investigate transverse hadron spectra from relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions which reflect important aspects of the dynamics - such as the generation of pressure - in the hot and dense zone formed in the early phase of the reaction. Our analysis is performed within two independent transport approaches (HSD and UrQMD) that are based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom. Both transport models show their reliability for elementary $pp$ as well as light-ion (C+C, Si+Si) reactions. However, for central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions at bombarding energies above $\sim$ 5 A$\cdot$GeV the measured $K^{\pm}$ transverse mass spectra have a larger inverse slope parameter than expected from the calculation. Thus the pressure generated by hadronic interactions in the transport models above $\sim$ 5 A$\cdot$GeV is lower than observed in the experimental data. This finding shows that the additional pressure - as expected from lattice QCD calculations at finite quark chemical potential and temperature - is generated by strong partonic interactions in the early phase of central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions.

Correlations and Equilibration in Relativistic Quantum Systems

In this article we study the time evolution of an interacting field theoretical system, i.e. ϕ^4-field theory in 2+1 space-time dimensions, on the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for a spatially homogeneous system including the self-consistent tadpole and sunset self-energies. We find that equilibration is achieved only by inclusion of the sunset self-energy. Simultaneously, the time evolution of the scalar particle spectral function is studied for various initial states. We also compare associated solutions of the corresponding Boltzmann equation to the full Kadanoff-Baym theory. This comparison shows that a consistent inclusion of the spectral function has a significant impact on the equilibration rates only if the width of the spectral function becomes larger than 1/3 of the particle mass. Furthermore, based on these findings, the conventional transport of particles in the on-shell quasiparticle limit is extended to particles of finite life time by means of a dynamical spectral function A(X,\vec{p},M^2). The off-shell propagation is implemented in the Hadron-String-Dynamics (HSD) transport code and applied to the dynamics of nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Quantum dynamics and thermalization for out-of-equilibrium phi^4-theory

The quantum time evolution of ϕ^4-field theory for a spatially homogeneous system in 2+1 space-time dimensions is investigated numerically for out-of-equilibrium initial conditions on the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym equations including the tadpole and sunset self-energies. Whereas the tadpole self-energy yields a dynamical mass, the sunset self-energy is responsible for dissipation and an equilibration of the system. In particular we address the dynamics of the spectral (`off-shell') distributions of the excited quantum modes and the different phases in the approach to equilibrium described by Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relations for thermal equilibrium states. The investigation explicitly demonstrates that the only translation invariant solutions representing the stationary fixed points of the coupled equation of motions are those of full thermal equilibrium. They agree with those extracted from the time integration of the Kadanoff-Baym equations in the long time limit. Furthermore, a detailed comparison of the full quantum dynamics to more approximate and simple schemes like that of a standard kinetic (on-shell) Boltzmann equation is performed. Our analysis shows that the consistent inclusion of the dynamical spectral function has a significant impact on relaxation phenomena. The different time scales, that are involved in the dynamical quantum evolution towards a complete thermalized state, are discussed in detail. We find that far off-shell 1 <-> 3 processes are responsible for chemical equilibration, which is missed in the Boltzmann limit. Finally, we address briefly the case of (bare) massless fields. For sufficiently large couplings $λ$ we observe the onset of Bose condensation, where our scheme within symmetric ϕ^4-theory breaks down.

Antikaon production in A+A collisions at SIS energies within an off-shell G-matrix approach

The production and propagation of antikaons -- described by dynamical spectral functions $A_h(X,\vec{P},M^2)$ as evaluated from a coupled channel $G$-matrix approach -- is studied for nucleus-nucleus collisions at SIS energies in comparison to the conventional quasi-particle limit and the available experimental data using off-shell transport theory. We find that the $K^-$ spectra for $^{12}C + ^{12}C$ and $^{58}Ni + ^{58}Ni$ at 1.8 A$\cdot$GeV remain underestimated in the $G$-matrix approach as in the on-shell quasi-particle approximation whereas the preliminary spectra for $Au + Au$ at 1.5 A$\cdot$GeV are well described in both limits. This also holds approximately for the $K^-$ rapidity distributions in semi-central collisions of $Ni+Ni$ at 1.93 A$\cdot$GeV. However, in all limits considered there is no convincing description of all spectra simultaneously. Our off-shell transport calculations, furthermore, demonstrate that the strongest in-medium effects should be found for low antikaon momenta in the center-of-mass frame, since the deceleration of the antikaons in the attractive Coulomb and nuclear potentials and the propagation to the on-shell mass induces a net shift and squeezing of the $K^-$ spectra to the low momentum regime.

Forward-backward angle asymmetry and polarization observables in high-energy deuteron photodisintegration

Deuteron two-body photodisintegration is analysed within the framework of the Quark-Gluon Strings Model. Open charm and charmonium production at relativistic energies

We calculate open charm and charmonium production in $Au+Au$ reactions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV within the hadron-string dynamics (HSD) transport approach employing open charm cross sections from $pN$ and $πN$ reactions that are fitted to results from PYTHIA and scaled in magnitude to the available experimental data. Charmonium dissociation with nucleons and formed mesons to open charm ($D+\bar{D}$ pairs) is included dynamically. The 'comover' dissociation cross sections are described by a simple phase-space model including a single free parameter, i.e. an interaction strength $M_0^2$, that is fitted to the $J/Ψ$ suppression data for $Pb+Pb$ collisions at SPS energies. As a novel feature we implement the backward channels for charmonium reproduction by $D \bar{D}$ channels employing detailed balance. From our dynamical calculations we find that the charmonium recreation is comparable to the dissociation by 'comoving' mesons. This leads to the final result that the total $J/Ψ$ suppression at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV as a function of centrality is slightly less than the suppression seen at SPS energies by the NA50 Collaboration, where the 'comover' dissociation is substantial and the backward channels play no role. Furthermore, even in case that all directly produced $J/Ψ$ mesons dissociate immediately (or are not formed as a mesonic state), a sizeable amount of charmonia is found asymptotically due to the $D+\bar{D} \to J/Ψ$ + meson channels in central collisions of $Au+Au$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV which, however, is lower than the $J/Ψ$ yield expected from binary scaling of $pp$ collisions.

Exploring isospin, strangeness charm distillation in heavy ion collisions

The isospin and strangeness dimensions of the Equation of State are explored. RIA and the SIS200 accelerator at GSI will allow to explore these regions in compressed baryonic matter. $^{132}$Sn+$^{132}$Sn and $^{100}$Sn+$^{100}$Sn collisions as well as the excitation functions of $K/π$, $Λ/π$ and the centrality dependence of charmonium suppression from the UrQMD and HSD transport models are presented and compared to data. Unambiguous proof for the creation of a 'novel phase of matter' from strangeness and charm yields is not in sight.
