Spin-transfer in bilayer magnetic nanopillars at high fields as a function of free layer thickness

Spin transfer in asymmetric Co/Cu/Co bilayer magnetic nanopillars junctions has been studied at low temperature as a function of free-layer thickness. The phase diagram for current-induced magnetic excitations has been determined for magnetic fields up to 7.5 T applied perpendicular to the junction surface and free-layers thicknesses from 2 to 5 nm. The junction magnetoresistance is independent of thickness. The critical current for magnetic excitations decreases linearly with decreasing free-layer thickness, but extrapolates to a finite critical current in the limit of zero thickness. The limiting current is in quantitative agreement with that expected due to a spin-pumping contribution to the magnetization damping. It may also be indicative of a decrease in the spin-transfer torque efficiency in ultrathin magnetic layers.

Search for the ϕ-N bound state from ϕmeson subthreshold production

The subthreshold photoproduction of ϕmesons from heavy nuclear targets has been suggested as a candidate to search for the ϕ-N bound state, a quantum chromodynamics molecular state. In this Brief Report, we present detailed Monte Carlo studies to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique. Further, we show that proton-induced subthreshold production of ϕmeson from heavy nuclear targets is also suitable for such a search.

Kerr-Schild Structure and Harmonic 2-forms on (A)dS-Kerr-NUT Metrics

We demonstrate that the general (A)dS-Kerr-NUT solutions in D dimensions with ([D/2], [(D+1)/2]) signature admit [D/2] linearly-independent, mutually-orthogonal and affinely-parameterised null geodesic congruences. This enables us to write the metrics in a multi-Kerr-Schild form, where the mass and all of the NUT parameters enter the metrics linearly. In the case of D=2n, we also obtain n harmonic 2-forms, which can be viewed as charged (A)dS-Kerr-NUT solution at the linear level of small-charge expansion, for the higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theories. In the BPS limit, these 2-forms reduce to n-1 linearly-independent ones, whilst the resulting Calabi-Yau metric acquires a Kahler 2-form, leaving the total number the same.

Resolved Calabi-Yau Cones and Flows from L^{abc} Superconformal Field Theories

We discuss D3-branes on cohomogeneity-three resolved Calabi-Yau cones over L^{abc} spaces, for which a 2-cycle or 4-cycle has been blown up. In terms of the dual quiver gauge theory, this corresponds to motion along the non-mesonic, or baryonic, directions in the moduli space of vacua. In particular, a dimension-two and/or dimension-six scalar operator gets a vacuum expectation value. These resolved cones support various harmonic (2,1)-forms which reduce the ranks of some of the gauge groups either by a Seiberg duality cascade or by Higgsing. We also discuss higher-dimensional resolved Calabi-Yau cones. In particular, we obtain square-integrable (2,2)-forms for eight-dimensional cohomogeneity-four Calabi-Yau metrics.

Ferromagnetic resonance study of sputtered Co|Ni multilayers

We report on room temperature ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies of [$t$ Co$|2t$ Ni]$\times$N sputtered films, where $0.1 \leq t \leq 0.6$ nm. Two series of films were investigated: films with same number of Co$|$Ni bilayer repeats (N=12), and samples in which the overall magnetic layer thickness is kept constant at 3.6 nm (N=1.2/$t$). The FMR measurements were conducted with a high frequency broadband coplanar waveguide up to 50 GHz using a flip-chip method. The resonance field and the full width at half maximum were measured as a function of frequency for the field in-plane and field normal to the plane, and as a function of angle to the plane for several frequencies. For both sets of films, we find evidence for the presence of first and second order anisotropy constants, $K_1$ and $K_2$. The anisotropy constants are strongly dependent on the thickness $t$, and to a lesser extent on the total thickness of the magnetic multilayer. The Landé g-factor increases with decreasing $t$ and is practically independent of the multilayer thickness. The magnetic damping parameter $α$, estimated from the linear dependence of the linewidth, $\triangle H$, on frequency, in the field in-plane geometry, increases with decreasing $t$. This behaviour is attributed to an enhancement of spin-orbit interactions with $t$ decreasing and in thinner films, to a spin-pumping contribution to the damping.

Cavity QED determination of atomic number statistics in optical lattices

We study the reflection of two counter-propagating modes of the light field in a ring resonator by ultracold atoms either in the Mott insulator state or in the superfluid state of an optical lattice. We obtain exact numerical results for a simple two-well model and carry out statistical calculations appropriate for the full lattice case. We find that the dynamics of the reflected light strongly depends on both the lattice spacing and the state of the matter-wave field. Depending on the lattice spacing, the light field is sensitive to various density-density correlation functions of the atoms. The light field and the atoms become strongly entangled if the latter are in a superfluid state, in which case the photon statistics typically exhibit complicated multimodal structures.

General Kerr-NUT-AdS Metrics in All Dimensions

The Kerr-AdS metric in dimension D has cohomogeneity [D/2]; the metric components depend on the radial coordinate r and [D/2] latitude variables μ_i that are subject to the constraint \sum_i μ_i^2=1. We find a coordinate reparameterisation in which the μ_i variables are replaced by [D/2]-1 unconstrained coordinates y_α, and having the remarkable property that the Kerr-AdS metric becomes diagonal in the coordinate differentials dy_α. The coordinates r and y_αnow appear in a very symmetrical way in the metric, leading to an immediate generalisation in which we can introduce [D/2]-1 NUT parameters. We find that (D-5)/2 are non-trivial in odd dimensions, whilst (D-2)/2 are non-trivial in even dimensions. This gives the most general Kerr-NUT-AdS metric in $D$ dimensions. We find that in all dimensions D\ge4 there exist discrete symmetries that involve inverting a rotation parameter through the AdS radius. These symmetries imply that Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics with over-rotating parameters are equivalent to under-rotating metrics. We also consider the BPS limit of the Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics, and thereby obtain, in odd dimensions and after Euclideanisation, new families of Einstein-Sasaki metrics.

Timing Features of the Accretion--driven Millisecond X-Ray Pulsar XTE J1807--294 in 2003 March Outburst

In order to probe the activity of the inner disk flow and its effect on the neutron star surface emissions, we carried out the timing analysis of the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the millisecond X-ray pulsar XTE J1807--294, focusing on its correlated behaviors in X-ray intensities, hardness ratios, pulse profiles and power density spectra. The source was observed to have a serial of broad "puny" flares on a timescale of hours to days on the top of a decaying outburst in March 2003. In the flares, the spectra are softened and the pulse profiles become more sinusoidal. The frequency of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillation (kHz QPO) is found to be positively related to the X-ray count rate in the flares. These features observed in the flares could be due to the accreting flow inhomogeneities. It is noticed that the fractional pulse amplitude increases with the flare intensities in a range of $\sim 2%-14%$, comparable to those observed in the thermonuclear bursts of the millisecond X-ray pulsar XTE J1814--338, whereas it remains at about 6.5% in the normal state. Such a significant variation of the pulse profile in the "puny" flares may reflect the changes of physical parameters in the inner disk accretion region. Furthermore, we noticed an overall positive correlation between the kHz QPO frequency and the fractional pulse amplitude, which could be the first evidence representing that the neutron-star surface emission properties are very sensitive to the disk flow inhomogeneities. This effect should be cautiously considered in the burst oscillation studies.

Mass of Rotating Black Holes in Gauged Supergravities

The masses of several recently-constructed rotating black holes in gauged supergravities, including the general such solution in minimal gauged supergravity in five dimensions, have until now been calculated only by integrating the first law of thermodynamics. In some respects it is more satisfactory to have a calculation of the mass that is based directly upon the integration of a conserved quantity derived from a symmetry principal. In this paper, we evaluate the masses for the newly-discovered rotating black holes using the conformal definition of Ashtekar, Magnon and Das (AMD), and show that the results agree with the earlier thermodynamic calculations. We also consider the Abbott-Deser (AD) approach, and show that this yields an identical answer for the mass of the general rotating black hole in five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. In other cases we encounter discrepancies when applying the AD procedure. We attribute these to ambiguities or pathologies of the chosen decomposition into background AdS metric plus deviations when scalar fields are present. The AMD approach, involving no decomposition into background plus deviation, is not subject to such complications. Finally, we also calculate the Euclidean action for the five-dimensional solution in minimal gauged supergravity, showing that it is consistent with the quantum statistical relation.

Separability in Cohomogeneity-2 Kerr-NUT-AdS Metrics

The remarkable and unexpected separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon equations in the background of a rotating four-dimensional black hole played an important role in the construction of generalisations of the Kerr metric, and in the uncovering of hidden symmetries associated with the existence of Killing tensors. In this paper, we show that the Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon equations are separable in Kerr-AdS backgrounds in all dimensions, if one specialises the rotation parameters so that the metrics have cohomogeneity 2. Furthermore, we show that this property of separability extends to the NUT generalisations of these cohomogeneity-2 black holes that we obtained in a recent paper. In all these cases, we also construct the associated irreducible rank-2 Killing tensor whose existence reflects the hidden symmetry that leads to the separability. We also consider some cohomogeneity-1 specialisations of the new Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics, showing how they relate to previous results in the literature.

Kerr-de Sitter Black Holes with NUT Charges

The four-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter and Kerr-AdS black hole metrics have cohomogeneity 2, and they admit a generalisation in which an additional parameter characterising a NUT charge is included. In this paper, we study the higher-dimensional Kerr-AdS metrics, specialised to cohomogeneity 2 by appropriate restrictions on their rotation parameters, and we show how they too admit a generalisation in which an additional NUT-type parameter is introduced. We discuss also the supersymmetric limits of the new metrics. If one performs a Wick rotation to Euclidean spacetime signature, these yield new Einstein-Sasaki metrics in odd dimensions, and Ricci-flat metrics in even dimensions. We also study the five-dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes in detail. Although in this particular case the NUT parameter is trivial, our investigation reveals the remarkable feature that a five-dimensional Kerr-AdS ``over-rotating'' metric is equivalent, after performing a coordinate transformation, to an under-rotating Kerr-AdS metric.

Ferromagnetic resonance study of polycrystalline Cobalt ultrathin films

We present room temperature ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies of polycrystalline ||Pt/10 nm Cu/t Co/10 nm Cu/Pt|| films as a function of Co layer thickness (1 < t < 10 nm) grown by evaporation and magnetron sputtering. FMR was studied with a high frequency broadband coplanar waveguide (up to 25 GHz) using a flip-chip method. The resonance field and the linewidth were measured as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness. The evaporated films exhibit a lower magnetization density (Ms = 1131 emu/cm^3) compared to the sputtered films (Ms= 1333 emu/cm^3), with practically equal perpendicular surface anisotropy (Ks ~ -0.5 erg/cm^2). For both series of films, a strong increase of the linewidth was observed for Co layer thickness below 3 nm. For films with a ferromagnetic layer thinner than 4 nm, the damping of the sputtered films is larger than that of the evaporated films. The thickness dependence of the linewidth can be understood in term of the spin pumping effect, from which the interface spin mixing conductance g^{\uparrow\downarrow}S^{-1} is deduced.

Levy-Kolmogorov scaling of turbulence

The Kolmogorov scaling law of turbulences has been considered the most important theoretical breakthrough in the last century. It is an essential approach to analyze turbulence data present in meteorological, physical, chemical, biological and mechanical phenomena. One of its very fundamental assumptions is that turbulence is a stochastic Gaussian process in small scales5. However, experiment data at finite Reynolds numbers have observed a clear departure from the Gaussian. In this study, by replacing the standard Laplacian representation of dissipation in the Navier-Stokes (NS) equation with the fractional Laplacian, we obtain the fractional NS equation underlying the Levy stable distribution which exhibits a non-Gaussian heavy trail and fractional frequency power law dissipation. The dimensional analysis of this equation turns out a new scaling of turbulences, called the Levy-Kolmogorov scaling, whose scaling exponent ranges from -3 to -5/3 corresponding to different Levy processes and reduces to the limiting Kolmogorov scaling -5/3 underlying a Gaussian process. The truncated Levy process and multi-scaling due to the boundary effect is also discussed. Finally, we further extend our model to reflecting the history-dependent fractional Brownian motion.

The Influence of the Magnetic Field on the Properties of Neutron Star Matter

In the mean field approximation of the relativistic $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$ model, the magnetic fields are incorporated, and its influence on the properties of n-p-e neutron star matter are studied. When the strength of the magnetic field is weaker than $\sim 10^{18}$G, the particle fractions and chemical potentials, matter energy density and pressure hardly change with the magnetic field; when the strength of the magnetic field is stronger than $\sim 10^{20}$G, the above quantities change with the magnetic field evidently. Furthermore, the pressure is studied in both thermodynamics and hydrodynamics. The difference between these two ways exits in the high density region, that is, the thermal self-consistency may not be satisfied in this region if the magnetic field is considered.

Crossover from Kramers to phase-diffusion switching in hysteretic DC-SQUIDs

We have measured and propose a model for switching rates in hysteretic DC-SQUID in the regime where phase diffusion processes start to occur. We show that the switching rates in this regime are smaller than the rates given by Kramers' formula due to retrapping of Josephson phase. The retrapping process, which is affected by the frequency dependent impedance of the environment of the DC-SQUID, leads to a peaked second moment of the switching distribution as a function of temperature. The temperature where the peaks occur are proportional to the critical current of the DC- SQUID.

Horava-Witten Stability: eppur si muove

We construct exact time-dependent solutions of the supergravity equations of motion in which two initially non-singular branes, one with positive and the other with negative tension, move together and annihilate each other in an all-enveloping spacetime singularity. Among our solutions are the Horava-Witten solution of heterotic M-theory and a Randall-Sundrum I type solution, both of which are supersymmetric, i.e. BPS, in the time-independent case. In the absence of branes our solutions are of Kasner type, and the source of instability may ascribed to a failure to stabilise some of the modulus fields of the compactification. It also raises questions about the viability of models based on some sorts of negative tension brane.

A Note on Einstein Sasaki Metrics in D \ge 7

In this paper, we obtain new non-singular Einstein-Sasaki spaces in dimensions D\ge 7. The local construction involves taking a circle bundle over a (D-1)-dimensional Einstein-Kahler metric that is itself constructed as a complex line bundle over a product of Einstein-Kahler spaces. In general the resulting Einstein-Sasaki spaces are singular, but if parameters in the local solutions satisfy appropriate rationality conditions, the metrics extend smoothly onto complete and non-singular compact manifolds.

Optical, vibrational, thermal, electrical, damage and phase-matching properties of lithium thioindate

Lithium thioindate (LiInS$_{2}$) is a new nonlinear chalcogenide biaxial material transparent from 0.4 to 12 $μ$m, that has been successfully grown in large sizes and good optical quality. We report on new physical properties that are relevant for laser and nonlinear optics applications. With respect to AgGaS(e)$_2$ ternary chalcopyrite materials, LiInS$_{2}$ displays a nearly-isotropic thermal expansion behavior, a 5-times larger thermal conductivity associated with high optical damage thresholds, and an extremely low intensity-dependent absorption allowing direct high-power downconversion from the near-IR to the deep mid-IR. Continuous-wave difference-frequency generation (5-11$ μ$m) of Ti:sapphire laser sources is reported for the first time.
